McLaren P1

Overview

McLaren Cars went quiet when F1 production ended in 1998 and did not build another car of its own until the MP4-12C in 2011. The P1 followed almost immediately: a concept at the 2012 Paris show, timed for the F1's twentieth anniversary, and a production car at Geneva in March 2013. It landed inside eighteen months of the Porsche 918 Spyder and the LaFerrari. Three companies had separately concluded the same thing, which is that the next step up from a supercar was a hybrid.

The three answered it differently. Porsche built an all-wheel-drive convertible you could commute in. Ferrari built a V12 with a motor helping it. McLaren took the 12C's 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8, wound it to 737 PS, added a 179 PS electric motor whose real job was filling the turbo lag, and put both under a body shaped by aerodynamics first.

Antony Sheriff said at the Paris debut that the aim was not to out-Veyron the Veyron but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production car on a circuit. Every choice on the car follows from that sentence. 375 were built and all of them were sold before the last one was finished.

About as far up this scale as a car gets. The petrol engine and the electric motor are blended by the ECUs, which use the motor to fill the turbo's gaps and give an effective powerband of nearly 7,000 rpm, so the driver never meets the V8 on its own. IPAS and DRS are steering-wheel buttons that dump in electric boost and flatten the rear wing. The RaceActive Chassis Control suspension is hydro-pneumatic, controls spring rate and damping at each corner, runs no conventional dampers or anti-roll bars, and drops the car 50 mm in Race mode. Steering is electro-hydraulic, the gearbox a seven-speed dual-clutch. Nothing here is a direct mechanical linkage.

375 built, and they trade often enough to band properly. The Classic Valuer records 36 sales at a 72 percent sell-through, with a median of £1,077,062 and a high of £1,968,070 since 2020; a wider aggregation of 88 sales across the online auction houses gives an average of $1,704,570. Values peaked near $2.25m in 2018, fell 49 percent to early 2021 and have been steady since, with 2025 results between roughly £1.05m and £1.43m and a 2024 low of £807,323. Lanzante's conversions are a separate market: a P1 HDK made $3,575,000 and a P1 GT $3,195,000 at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2026. The band below describes a standard road car.

What to watch for
The battery is the whole conversation. The 4.7 kWh pack behind the cabin uses cells that date from as early as 2010, and degraded packs have left cars undrivable. McLaren's answer is an upgraded pack, quoted at $156,700 in 2022 and over £110,000 in the UK, which weighs about 110 lb against the original's 234 lb and which McLaren says takes four tenths off the 0-186 mph time. Some owners have reported a single failed module replaced for around $45,000. V Engineering now offers an aftermarket pack with more capacity and less weight. So ask two things before anything else: has the pack been replaced, and how has the car been stored. McLaren's guidance is not to leave the pack unattended for more than three or four weeks, and a P1 that has sat untouched in a collection is a very different proposition from one that has been used and maintained. Beyond that it is a well-understood modern McLaren. The January 2016 recall covered 122 cars built between March 2013 and October 2015 for a secondary bonnet latch that might not catch, and it was fixed free. Carbon-ceramic sets run $12,000 to $25,000. Ask whether the car has seen track days, because that is what it was built for.

The Story

Driving character

It is quick in a way that is hard to keep hold of. 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 in 6.8, 0-300 in 16.5, which is five and a half seconds faster to 300 km/h than an F1. Top speed is limited to 217 mph, and the limiter is the only thing in the way. The hybrid is not there for economy. The motor's job is torque fill, plugging the turbo's gaps so the 3.8 pulls like something much bigger, and pressing IPAS on the steering wheel dumps the whole 179 PS in at once. DRS is the other button, flattening the rear wing on a straight. Both are borrowed from Formula One and both do exactly what the name says. What separates it from the 918 and the LaFerrari is the aerodynamics. 600 kg of downforce at 160 mph, well below top speed, on a car with a drag coefficient of 0.34. In Race mode the suspension drops 50 mm, the spring rate roughly trebles, and the car is claimed to corner at 2 g. Top Gear's verdict was that the P1 asks the most of the driver of the three and gets sharper the faster you go, which is a polite way of saying it is the intimidating one.

Design

Frank Stephenson led the exterior and the rule was that nothing existed that did not do a job. The body is shrink-wrapped over the hard points, the cabin sits at the centre of it, and the shape is a downforce argument rather than a styling one: 600 kg at 160 mph with a drag coefficient of 0.34, from a deployable rear wing and active aero rather than a fixed spoiler. The famous detail is a fish. Stephenson saw a sailfish on holiday in Miami, bought one, had it stuffed and shipped to Woking, and had McLaren's aerodynamics department laser-scan it. The two small bumps near a sailfish's tail solved the wind noise coming off the P1's extended mirror stalks, so five teardrop bumps went onto each stalk and the noise stopped. The scale texture that reduces a sailfish's drag through water was copied onto the engine inlet ducts to move more air. Butterfly doors, as on the F1 and every McLaren since. And on the 2016 P1 by MSO, a 24-carat gold exhaust heat shield, which is neither a coincidence nor subtle.

Motorsport pedigree

The P1 never entered a race, and that was deliberate. There was no series it fitted: GT racing had settled on GT3 and GTE, and McLaren's own customer programme in those years ran the 12C GT3 through 2014 and the 650S GT3 from 2015, both built from Super Series cars rather than the flagship. What McLaren built instead was the P1 GTR: 58 track-only cars sold to P1 owners, run and serviced by McLaren Special Operations, and used for an owners' track programme rather than a championship. Owners got events at Formula One circuits, time in the McLaren Racing simulator, their own race technicians and Bruno Senna as mentor. It is a driving club with a very expensive membership card, and calling it a racing programme would be generous. The one competitive number the P1 family owns came from outside the factory. Lanzante's P1 LM prototype, XP1 LM, ran the Nordschleife in 6:43.22 on 27 April 2017 with Kenny Brack driving, on road-legal Pirelli Trofeo R tyres but without the front number plate a road car needs. The same car set the fastest road-car time up the Goodwood hill in 2016, at 47.07 seconds.

In culture

The P1's place in culture is welded to two other cars. It arrived alongside the LaFerrari and the 918 Spyder, the press named the three the Holy Trinity within months, and no P1 story has been told without them since. Getting all three together took work: Ferrari and McLaren would not lend cars for Top Gear's own track test, and it was Chris Harris who eventually put factory cars from all three makers on Portimao with Tiff Needell and Marino Franchitti for a 52-minute film. Top Gear's written verdict, when it came, was that the P1 is the one that demands most and rewards commitment. In games it has done better than the F1 ever did. Forza Motorsport 5 had it at launch and every main title has carried it since, with the GTR arriving in Forza Motorsport 6. Need for Speed Rivals ran it as a racer car unlocked at rank 20, and No Limits gave it away for a week-long event in 2017. Gran Turismo Sport took the GTR rather than the road car. Then Hot Wheels, Lego Speed Champions, Scalextric, an Amalgam 1:8, and from October 2016 a ride-on electric P1 for children.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The P1 is the rarest of the three cars that defined the hybrid hypercar and the one that has had the roughest ride in the market. 375 were built, more than twice as rare as the Porsche 918 Spyder, and yet the two trade at similar money while the LaFerrari sits well above both.

That gap is the buying case. Values peaked around $2.25m in 2018, fell 49 percent by early 2021, and have since settled into a consistent band, with 2025 results running between roughly £1.05m and £1.43m. The car has stopped falling and has not run away from anybody.

What makes it worth owning rather than trading is that it is the most single-minded of the three. Porsche built a hybrid you could use every day and Ferrari built a V12 with assistance. McLaren built a track car and gave the hybrid a track car's job, which is why the P1 is the one that still gets talked about in terms of what it asks of a driver. The Lanzante conversions show where the real appetite is: a P1 HDK made $3,575,000 and a P1 GT $3,195,000 at Monterey in August 2026, roughly double a standard car.

Which one to look for

375 road cars, and then a second life that has produced more interesting cars than the original run. The P1 GTR came first: 58 track-only cars, offered to P1 owners, built only after the last road car was finished, and run and maintained by McLaren Special Operations. 1,000 PS, 50 kg lighter, slicks, fixed ride height, a fixed wing that still operates DRS. Buying one bought a worldwide owners' track series, events at Formula One circuits, simulator time and your own crew, with Bruno Senna as driver mentor. Later cars were sold cheaper to owners who did not want the series. Then Lanzante Motorsport, the team that ran the 1995 Le Mans winner, started making them road legal. 27 GTRs have been converted so far. Six more GTRs were built by MSO Bespoke for Lanzante to turn into the P1 LM: five sold, the sixth kept as XP1 LM. Those run a 3,994cc V8 with an 8,500 rpm redline and 1,000 PS, weigh 60 kg less than a GTR and make 40 percent more downforce. Two P1 GTs followed in 2018 with F1 GT long-tail bodywork, then six GTR-18s, then five open P1 Spiders in 2022. The LM is the grail.

P1 · 2013–2015

P1 GT · 2018

Lanzante's long-tail, commissioned by two McLaren customers and shown at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Bodywork modelled on the 1997 McLaren F1 GT homologation special: extended rear section, larger rear wing, longer front splitter, vented front wings, front canards deleted, quad exhaust in place of the twin outlet, revised diffuser, and Silverstone green paint after the original. Fixed sports seats, tan and green Alcantara, racing steering wheel. Powertrain changes were never published.

P1 GTR · 2015–2016

Track only, and sold in the first instance to existing P1 owners. 1,000 PS, an 84 PS gain McLaren never broke down between engine and motor, and 50 kg lighter at 1,440 kg with the batteries in. Slicks, fixed ride height, race-prepared suspension, a fixed rear wing that still runs DRS, and a titanium and Inconel exhaust, giving 10 percent more downforce than the road car. Built, maintained and run by McLaren Special Operations. Purchase included a worldwide owners' track series at Formula One circuits, McLaren Racing simulator access and a personal team of race technicians, with Bruno Senna as driver mentor.

P1 LM · 2016–2017

The grail. Lanzante Motorsport commissioned McLaren Special Operations Bespoke to build six further P1 GTRs and turned them into road-legal cars. Larger 3,994cc twin-turbo V8 with an 8,500 rpm redline, 1,000 PS total (800 PS at 7,250 rpm plus 200 PS electric) and 1,050 Nm, limited to 345 km/h. 60 kg lighter than a GTR and 40 percent more downforce, via a modified wing, a larger splitter, dive planes, deleted air jacks, Inconel headers and catalysts, lightweight charge coolers, Lexan glass, F1 GTR-style seats and a titanium exhaust.

What owning one is like

The P1 is a modern McLaren to own, which makes it far less frightening than an F1 and far more dependent on one component. The hybrid pack is the thing. Cells dating from 2010 onwards do not improve with age, degraded packs have stopped cars entirely, and the fix is either McLaren's upgraded pack at a quoted $156,700 or the aftermarket answer from V Engineering. Owners report single modules replaced for around $45,000 where the whole pack does not need to go. Storage matters more than mileage here. McLaren's guidance is not to leave the pack unattended beyond three or four weeks, and the marque's 12V batteries flatten in seven to fourteen days without a tender, so a car that has been properly looked after in a collection is fine and one that has simply been parked is not. Everything else is ordinary hypercar upkeep. Annual servicing runs around $2,200, carbon-ceramic sets $12,000 to $25,000, and McLarens of this era are known for coolant hose clamp seepage and low-mounted radiators that stones find. The 2016 bonnet latch recall covered 122 cars and was done free.

Upkeep & parts

Servicing is normal McLaren, which is to say expensive but organised. Annual service is roughly $2,200, with routine work between $1,000 and $2,500 at about 10,000-mile intervals, and a carbon-ceramic brake set is $12,000 to $25,000. Keep the 12V battery on a tender, because a McLaren of this era will flatten one in a week or two sitting still, and keep the hybrid pack charged and exercised.

The single budget line that dominates everything is that pack. McLaren's upgraded version was quoted at $156,700 in 2022 and over £110,000 in the UK. It is less than half the weight of the original and improves the car, so it is not purely a repair, but it is real money and it will come round again. V Engineering's aftermarket pack matters for exactly that reason: how much of the P1's future rests on one part staying available.

For anything Lanzante built or converted, Lanzante is the source. There is no publicly readable P1 registry, no factory workshop manual sold to owners, and no McLaren museum. McLaren Life is where the owner knowledge actually sits.
