Land Rover Series III

Overview

The Series III is the Land Rover most people have actually met. Around 440,000 were built between 1971 and 1985, which makes it the most numerous of the four Series generations and the one that filled British farmyards, army bases, water boards and aid convoys through the 1970s. The millionth Land Rover of all rolled out of Solihull in 1976, halfway through this run.

Mechanically it is a Series IIA that has been made easier to live with. The headline change is synchromesh on all four gears, which sounds trivial and is not: it removed the one skill a Series Land Rover demanded of every driver. The body and engines carried over, but the metal grille became plastic, and the flat metal dashboard was replaced by a moulded plastic one with the instruments finally in front of the driver rather than in the middle.

It also spans the end of an era. In 1979 the Stage 1 V8 arrived with Range Rover running gear and permanent four-wheel drive, a preview of what was coming. The coil-sprung One Ten launched in 1983 and the Ninety in 1984, and the leaf-sprung Land Rover carried on beside them until 1985.

Nothing on a Series III depends on electronics. Ignition is coil and points, and the main advance over the IIA is an alternator in place of the dynamo on later cars, which means the battery charges at idle. Fuelling is a single carburettor, or on the diesel a mechanical injection pump that will keep running with the battery disconnected. The dashboard gained a moulded plastic face and a fuse box that is easier to reach, but the loom behind it is still short, colour-coded and fully documented in the workshop manual. Transfer case, handbrake, throttle and clutch are all mechanical linkages. The Stage 1 V8 adds a second carburettor and nothing else of consequence. A test lamp and a spanner remain the whole diagnostic kit.

The most numerous Series and the least expensive, which keeps the volume market flat even while the rest of the family climbs. Around 440,000 were built and a great many survive in some form, so condition and honesty decide price rather than scarcity. Original, unmodified vehicles with paperwork are worth a real premium over the rebuilt soft-tops that dominate the classifieds. The exceptions to the flat picture are the 1982 County Station Wagons and the Stage 1 V8, both of which have pulled away from the rest. No auction comparables were reachable and no published guide exists for this generation, so the band is an editorial judgment placed below the Series II/IIA.

What to watch for
Two things decide a Series III purchase, and neither is the paint. The chassis is box-section steel that rots from inside, so check the rear crossmember, the outriggers, the spring hangers and the bulkhead outriggers with a screwdriver rather than your eyes. A galvanised replacement chassis is a normal, respectable repair and a documented one adds value. The bulkhead is the expensive one. It carries the doors, the windscreen frame and the pedal box, and it fails at the footwells, the door pillars and the top corners. Open and close the doors, look at the gaps, and price the job before you fall for the vehicle. Where the alloy panels meet steel hinges, cappings and frames, the Birmabright turns to white powder. Door bottoms first, then the screen surround. The specific Series III trap is identity. This generation was built in enormous numbers and worked hard, so rebuilt vehicles made from three decades of parts are common. That is not automatically bad, but a IIA wearing a Series III grille, or a galvanised-chassis rebuild with a replacement bulkhead, is a different purchase from an original truck and should carry a different price.

The Story

Driving character

The all-synchromesh gearbox changes the whole character of the vehicle, and it is why a Series III is the one to pick if you actually intend to drive rather than to preserve. You can change gear without ceremony, which means you can keep up with traffic, which means the Land Rover becomes transport instead of an event. Everything else is familiar. The 2.25 petrol pulls hard from low revs and gives up early, happiest at 50 to 55mph with the noise of the transfer case filling the cab. The diesel is slower again, louder, and better at the low-speed work these were built for. The 2.6 six is smoother and thirsty. Steering is unassisted, slow and vague around the straight ahead. Brakes are drums and want a firm push and a long look ahead. The seating position is upright and the visibility over that flat bonnet is still one of the best things about the vehicle. The Stage 1 V8 is a different animal, quieter and more relaxed, with permanent four-wheel drive that takes the twitchiness out of a wet road. It is the closest a leaf-sprung Land Rover ever came to being easy.

Design

The Series III is where the Land Rover starts admitting that people might sit in it. The body is still Bache's 1958 shape, curved sides and cill panels and all, but the metal grille has become plastic and the flat sheet-metal dashboard has gone, replaced by a moulded plastic panel with the instruments in front of the driver where a car would put them. On a IIA the speedometer sits in the middle of the bulkhead, which tells you exactly how much thought had gone into the driver before now. The headlamps stay out in the wings, inherited from the late IIA, where overseas lighting regulations had pushed them. That face, wings and lamps and a slotted grille between them, is the one the Ninety and One Ten kept in 1983 and the Defender kept until 2016. The County of April 1982 is the design moment worth noticing. Side stripes, cloth seats and a deliberate colour scheme on a vehicle that had been sold on function for thirty-four years. Everything the Defender later did with special editions starts there.

Motorsport pedigree

There is no factory competition programme, for the same reason as every Land Rover before it: Rover, and then British Leyland, built these to earn export currency and had neither the money nor the reason to go racing. Through the 1970s the corporation was in permanent financial crisis and the utility Land Rover was one of the few things reliably making a profit, which is a poor argument for a motorsport budget. The Series III does have a real competition record, though, and it is the first in the family. When the Camel Trophy began in 1980 it ran licence-built Jeep CJ-5s. Land Rover took over from 1981 with the Range Rover, and for the 1982 and 1983 events Series IIIs ran alongside them. That is a genuine, dated result in the toughest organised off-road event of its era, and it is the moment the marque became a competition brand rather than a workhorse that happened to be tough. The trend continued without it. From 1984 the Camel Trophy switched to the coil-sprung 90 and 110, and the leaf-sprung Land Rover's competition career ended almost as soon as it started.

In culture

The Series III is the Land Rover of the 1970s and it is embedded in that decade's visual record: British Army convoys, water board depots, Ordnance Survey trig teams, safari parks, ski lifts and the back of every rural fire station. It appeared constantly on television for the simple reason that it was what the crews and the location vehicles actually were. It is also the Land Rover of the aid and development era. Series IIIs went out with the Red Cross, with the UN and with a hundred smaller agencies, and in much of Africa and Asia a green Land Rover with the lamps in the wings is still the picture that comes to mind when someone says four-wheel drive. Owners call it a Landy, a word attached to the marque rather than to this generation, and enthusiasts call it a Series truck. It is the generation with the least glamour and the widest reach, and the two facts are related. When people talk about a Land Rover as something that turns up where nothing else will, the vehicle they are describing is usually this one.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

This is the cheapest honest way into the Series family, and that is the argument rather than a criticism. There are enough of them that a buyer can be selective, parts are everywhere, and the all-synchromesh gearbox means a Series III can be used on modern roads without a special skill set. For a lot of people that is the right trade against the extra money an early car costs.

The hierarchy is clear. At the bottom sit rebuilt 88 soft-tops of uncertain parentage, of which there are many. Above them, honest original 88 and 109 hardtops. Then the Station Wagons, and the April 1982 County with its cloth seats and side stripes, which is the one that reads as a period piece rather than a tool. At the top sits the Stage 1 V8 of 1979 to 1985, the only Series Land Rover with permanent four-wheel drive and the technical bridge to the Defender. Only 24 were built on the short 88-inch chassis.

The ceiling here is lower than the Series I's, and the floor is much lower. Both are the point.

Which one to look for

The 88-inch is the volume car and the one that turns up most: soft-top, truck cab or hardtop, with the 2.25-litre petrol or the slower and cheaper-to-run 2.25 diesel. The 109 does the same job with more length and, from the IIA carryover, the option of the 2.6-litre six. Move up and it gets more interesting. The Station Wagons are the ones worth waiting for, and the April 1982 County specification is the pick of those: cloth seats, side stripes and a level of trim that turned the Land Rover into something a family might choose rather than tolerate. It is the first sign of the vehicle understanding that it had private buyers. The grail is the Stage 1 V8, built from 1979 to 1985. It took the 3.5-litre Rover V8 detuned to 91hp, the LT95 gearbox and the transfer case from the Range Rover, and became the only Series Land Rover with permanent four-wheel drive. Most were 109s. Just 24 were built on the 88-inch chassis, which makes a short Stage 1 the rarest thing here by a wide margin. For completeness: 238 Series III 1-Tons were built for the home market, and the New Zealand Army bought 566 109-inch V8s.

109-inch · 1971–1985

Introduced April 1982. Cloth seats, side stripes and a proper colour scheme on a vehicle sold on function since 1948. The first sign Land Rover was courting private buyers, and the direct ancestor of every Defender special edition.

Stage 1 V8 · 1979–1985

The 3.5-litre Rover V8 detuned to 91hp, with the LT95 gearbox and transfer case from the Range Rover. The only Series Land Rover with permanent four-wheel drive, and the technical bridge to the coil-sprung One Ten.

Station Wagon · 1971–1985

Five doors, seating for up to ten and the safari roof. The body that turned the Land Rover into transport for people rather than only for loads.

What owning one is like

A Series III asks for attention rather than money, and it gives plenty of warning before anything serious happens. The chassis and the bulkhead are the two items that decide whether a vehicle is worth keeping. Both are steel, both rot from the inside out, and both have a well-established repair industry behind them. The bulkhead is the one that costs, because reaching it means dismantling the front of the vehicle first. The alloy body does not rust, but it corrodes into white powder wherever it touches steel: door bottoms, hinge pillars, cappings and the windscreen surround. Left alone it goes from cosmetic to structural at the hinges. Everything else is undramatic. The 2.25 engines leak from the usual places and run for a very long time. Swivel balls weep, the transfer case marks its parking spot, the steering box needs periodic adjustment and the drum brakes need adjusting more often than a modern driver expects. Doors do not seal, the heater is optimistic and the noise at 55mph is constant. None of that is a reason not to. It is simply what the vehicle is, and it has been that way since 1948.

Upkeep & parts

This is one of the easiest classics in the world to keep on the road. Chassis, bulkheads, body panels, axles, engines and complete wiring looms are all available new, and the bolt-together body means panel work is a home job rather than a bodyshop job. A galvanised replacement chassis is an off-the-shelf purchase and, fitted properly, effectively ends the vehicle's biggest long-term problem.

Budget for the two specialist items: chassis replacement, which needs alignment done properly, and bulkhead repair, which is labour rather than parts. Everything else is a socket set and a workshop manual.

Running costs are modest. Fuel is the real one, since the 2.25 petrol is thirsty for its performance and the 2.6 six is worse. The diesel is slower and cheaper and plenty of owners take that trade happily.
