Land Rover Range Rover Classic

Overview

The Range Rover invented a category and then spent twenty-six years drifting away from what it was. Spen King and Gordon Bashford drew it in 1967 as the 100-inch Station Wagon, an attempt to give the Land Rover's ability to something with a car's manners. David Bache styled it. It went on sale in June 1970 as A Car For All Reasons.

The engineering was genuinely new in combination. Coil springs rather than leaf, permanent four-wheel drive with a lockable centre differential, and disc brakes on all four wheels, all on a box-section ladder chassis with a Buick-derived Rover V8 detuned to 127hp on top. Nothing else on sale offered that set together.

What it was not, at the start, was a luxury car. Early Range Rovers had vinyl seats and plastic dashboards specifically designed to be washed out with a hose. Power steering, carpet, air conditioning, leather and wood arrived later, one at a time, across two and a half decades.

By the end it was a completely different proposition: four doors from 1981, fuel injection from 1984, electronically controlled air suspension from late 1992 and a 4.2-litre long-wheelbase Vogue LSE. 326,070 were built, and Spen King lived long enough to complain publicly about what his design had become.

A launch Range Rover is almost as analogue as a Series Land Rover: a carburettor V8, points ignition, mechanical linkages for the transfer case and the centre differential lock, and no driver aids of any kind. The launch engine even had provision for cranking it with a starting handle. Lucas fuel injection arrived in 1984 and brought the first real engine electronics, taking the 3.5 from 127hp to 155hp. Anti-lock brakes followed at the end of the decade, and from late 1992 the high-end cars got electronically controlled air suspension, the most complex system ever fitted to a Classic and the one most likely to have been removed by a previous owner. The Tdi diesels of the 1990s pull the score back down, since their injection pumps are mechanical.

The market has split hard. Two-door cars, and especially the earliest of them, have pulled a long way clear of the rest and are now bought as design objects rather than as vehicles. The band below describes the volume car, a sorted four-door County or Vogue, which is still one of the more affordable ways into a genuinely significant classic. What suppresses the middle of the market is condition: 326,070 were built, a great many were used as farm and school-run transport until the chassis failed, and restoration costs on a rusty one comfortably exceed the finished value. Air-suspension cars are discounted unless the system works or has been properly converted. No auction comparables were reachable this session, so the band is an editorial judgment.

What to watch for
Rust decides everything, and this vehicle is much better at concealing it than a Series Land Rover. The chassis is box-section steel and rots from inside, worst at the rear crossmember, the spring turrets and the outriggers. Get underneath with a torch and a screwdriver before you look at the paint. The structure matters more than the skin here. The Range Rover hangs aluminium panels on a steel safety frame, a method Rover had proved on the P6 saloon, so the outer panels stay respectable while the frame, the bulkhead, the inner wings and the sills corrode behind them. The rear corners next to the two-piece tailgate are a known weak spot and the tailgate itself rots along its lower edge. Mechanically the Rover V8 is straightforward but not immortal. Overheating is the enemy, because a badly cooked block can drop a cylinder liner. Check the coolant, check for oil in it, and treat a spotless engine bay with suspicion. Later cars with electronically controlled air suspension often sit down overnight. The fix is understood but not cheap, which is why so many have been converted to coils. Interiors are the quiet killer of a project: trim and switchgear for early cars are harder to find than mechanical parts.

The Story

Driving character

This is the vehicle that proved a four-wheel drive could ride properly, and it still feels like the discovery it was. Long-travel coil springs let the body move in a way that seems alarming for the first mile and then reveals itself as the whole point. The Range Rover floats over broken surfaces that make modern off-roaders crash and fidget. It leans in corners, settles, and then simply holds on. The V8 is the character. A carburettor 3.5 makes a soft, off-beat burble and never sounds strained, pulling from almost nothing with a lazy delivery that suits the car exactly. Those early carburettors were modified to keep feeding the engine at extreme angles, and the vehicle was built with provision for a starting handle, which tells you what Rover thought it was making. The injected engines are crisper and quicker. None is fast by modern measure and none needs to be. The driving position is the other revelation: high and upright, with thin pillars and a shallow dashboard, and visibility that shames anything built since. Off the road, permanent four-wheel drive and the lockable centre differential mean it simply goes, with none of the ceremony a Series Land Rover demands.

Design

Bache's Range Rover is one of the great examples of a shape that got left alone. The proportions are almost entirely functional: a straight waistline set high, a roof that appears to float on blacked-out pillars, a clamshell bonnet with a raised centre section, and a tailgate split into upper and lower halves. There is no ornament anywhere and very little that could be removed. The construction explains a lot of it. Where a utility Land Rover used panels rolled from single sheets of aluminium, the Range Rover hung aluminium panels on a steel safety frame, a method Rover had already proved on the P6 saloon. That gave Bache flatter, larger surfaces to work with and kept the corrosion-resistant alloy skin on the outside. The bonnet and door hinges were exposed on early cars and gradually evolved out of sight, which is a quick way to place one by eye. Inside, this was the first appearance of Bache's trademark symmetric dashboard, an idea that reads as functional restraint and was also very cheap to build in left- and right-hand drive. In the early 1970s the Musée du Louvre exhibited a Range Rover as an exemplary work of industrial design, which was more than the factory was claiming for it at the time.

Motorsport pedigree

The Range Rover has a stronger competition record than any other Land Rover product, and it earned it early. It won the Paris-Dakar in 1979, the first running of the event, with Alain Génestier, and won again in 1981 with René Metge. Two outright victories in the hardest endurance rally raid there was, from a vehicle designed to carry hay bales and a family with equal indifference. It also opened the Camel Trophy. The event began in 1980 on licence-built Jeeps, Land Rover took over in 1981 with the Range Rover, and Range Rovers ran again in 1982 and 1983 alongside Series IIIs, with a Range Rover TD returning in 1987. Those years turned Land Rover into a competition brand, and the Range Rover was the vehicle that started it. Before either came the harder thing. In 1971 and 1972 the British Trans-Americas Expedition drove north to south through both American continents, and two Range Rovers, with a Series IIA alongside, were among the first vehicles ever to force a way through the Darién Gap, where there is no road at all.

In culture

The Range Rover created the vehicle the world now buys more of than anything else, which is a strange legacy for something designed to be hosed out. By the 1980s it had become the default transport of the British countryside at its most moneyed, and the name had stopped describing a vehicle and started describing a social position. That happened without Land Rover planning it, which is why the interior took a decade to catch up with the badge. America got it late and took to it quickly. The official launch came at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 1987, imports of factory-built US models began that March, and a network of thirty-six dealers had grown to sixty-five by 1988. Playboy named it Best 4x4 that year, which tells you exactly where the vehicle had landed in the American imagination. Spen King watched all of it and did not enjoy the ending. In 2004 he said publicly that vehicles like the Range Rover he created were never intended as a status symbol, and that later incarnations of his design seemed to be intended for exactly that. He drew the first one. He is allowed the last word on it.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The Classic is the origin point of an entire market segment, and the argument for owning one is that it is the only Range Rover that still reads as an idea rather than a product. Bache's shape has almost nothing on it: a straight waistline, a floating roof, a clamshell bonnet and a two-piece tailgate. Everything since has been an elaboration.

The hierarchy is steep. Two-door cars stand well clear of the rest, and the earliest of those clear everything, because they are the purest expression of the original brief and few honest ones are left. Below them the four-doors from 1981 divide by trim: a plain County is a usable classic, a Vogue is a period piece, and the 1992 Vogue LSE on the 108-inch chassis is the most car-like and the most complicated.

The Tdi diesels are the connoisseur's pick for use rather than investment, being far cheaper to run than a 3.9 V8 that returns single-figure economy in town.

The one thing the market punishes without mercy is rust, and the Classic hides it better than a Series Land Rover does, because the aluminium skin stays tidy while the steel underneath it does not.

Which one to look for

The two-door is the collector's car and the four-door is the usable one, and that split governs everything. Two-doors ran alone from 1970 to 1981 and then alongside the four-door for several more years. The earliest cars are the purists' target, closest to King and Bashford's original brief and the hardest to find honest. The four-door from 1981 is where the Range Rover became the thing people remember, and it is where the trim ladder starts. A plain County is the sensible buy. The Vogue is the one with the equipment. The 1992 Vogue LSE, sold as the County LWB in North America, put a 4.2-litre V8 and air suspension on a 108-inch chassis and is the most comfortable and least simple of them. Engines matter as much as trim. The carburettor 3.5 is the period-correct choice, the injected 3.5 from 1984 is the better daily engine, and the 3.9 and 4.2 are quicker and thirstier still. The 200Tdi from 1992 and the 300Tdi from 1994 are Land Rover's own diesels and the ones to have if you intend to cover distance. Four-door · 1981–1996

Introduced in 1981 and immediately the volume car. The body that turned the Range Rover from an interesting engineering exercise into the vehicle everybody remembers.

North American Specification · 1987–1996

The US-market car. Officially introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 1987, seventeen years after a vehicle designed with America in mind first went on sale in Britain.

Two-door · 1970–1981

The original body and the collector's car. Vinyl seats and a plastic dashboard designed to be hosed out, on coil springs with permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel disc brakes. The earliest examples are the purists' target.

VM Motori turbodiesel

The first diesel Range Rover, using an Italian-built VM Motori turbodiesel four of 112bhp, developed under the project codename Beaver and badged Vogue Turbo D. A 119bhp 2.5-litre version, project Otter, followed in 1990.

Vogue

The equipment level. Where the wood, leather, carpet and air conditioning that the launch car deliberately went without finally arrived.

Vogue LSE / County LWB · 1992–1996

The long one. A 108-inch wheelbase, the 4.2-litre V8 and air suspension, sold as the Vogue LSE in Britain and the County LWB in North America. The most comfortable Classic and the most complicated.

What owning one is like

A Classic rewards the buyer who bought the right one and punishes everybody else, and the dividing line is rust. The steel chassis rots from inside its box sections, and behind the aluminium skin the steel safety frame, the bulkhead, the inner wings and the sills go the same way. Because the outer panels stay corrosion-resistant and tidy, the vehicle can look healthy while the structure is not. A galvanised replacement chassis is an established repair and worth paying for. The Rover V8 is easy to work on and unforgiving about heat. Keep the cooling system honest and it runs a very long way. Let it overheat badly once and a dropped liner is possible. Oil leaks are normal and rarely serious. Electrics are of their era, which means earths, connectors and switchgear rather than modules. Air suspension on late cars settles overnight as the system tires, and plenty have been converted back to coil springs. What catches people out is trim. Interior parts, headlinings and switchgear for early cars are harder to source than anything mechanical, so a complete, unworn cabin is worth chasing even at the cost of a tireder engine.

Upkeep & parts

Mechanically this is one of the easier classics to run. The Rover V8 is among the best supported engines in Britain, with everything from gaskets to complete rebuild kits available and a large body of specialists who know its habits. Chassis, suspension, axles, brakes and drivetrain parts are shared widely enough across Land Rover products to be plentiful and sensibly priced, and a galvanised replacement chassis is a normal purchase.

Bodywork and trim are the exceptions. Outer panels can be had, but structural repairs to the steel safety frame, the bulkhead, the inner wings and the sills are labour-heavy, and early interior parts, headlinings, switchgear and correct seat facings are genuinely scarce. Budget more for a shabby interior than for a tired engine.

Fuel is the running cost that surprises people. A carburettor 3.5 in town returns figures that belong to another era, and the 3.9 and 4.2 are worse. A Tdi is the answer if you intend to use one properly.
