Overview

The concept Jaguar unveiled at the Birmingham motor show in October 1988 was finished at three in the morning on the day it was shown, pushed onto the stand at six and uncovered at eleven. It swallowed the event. An estimated 90,000 extra visitors came through the doors to see it, and Ferrari, showing the F40 on the same floor, may as well have brought a filing cabinet. Wealthy enthusiasts handed over blank cheques on the spot. The car they were buying had a 6.2-litre V12 and four-wheel drive. The car JaguarSport could actually build, certify and sell had a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 and drove only its rear wheels. Around 281 deposits of £50,000 were taken against a list price of £290,000 in January 1990, and by the first customer delivery in June 1992 index-linked contracts had pushed that past £470,000 into the teeth of a recession. Plenty of the people who had queued in 1988 now wanted out, and Jaguar went to court to hold them to it. The same company built the fastest production car on earth and then had to litigate to make anyone take delivery.

For 1992 the XJ220 carried real electronic content, and all of it sits in the engine bay: Zytek engine management, multipoint injection with dual injectors per cylinder, and closed-loop control of two Garrett turbochargers. The car does not run without its ECU. Nothing else is electronic. There is no ABS, no traction control, no stability system and no adjustable damping, the brakes have no servo at all, and the only traction aid is a viscous limited-slip differential in the transaxle. Rear-wheel steering and adjustable ride height were both engineered for the concept and deleted before production.

The XJ220 was the bargain of the 1990s supercar set for a long time, and the auction record shows that correcting. The Classic Valuer counts 73 sales all time at a 78 percent sell-through, with results since 2020 running from £210,000 to £551,186 and a median of £420,525. Recent public sales bracket the band written here: £310,500 at Bonhams Goodwood in July 2025, $473,000 at Mecum Monterey and $582,500 at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2025, CHF445,000 at Broad Arrow Zurich in March 2026 and £534,240 at Broad Arrow in August 2026. Dealer asking prices sit well above that, past £500,000, and are not what this band reflects. The six XJ220S cars are a separate market and are excluded from it.

What to watch for
Start with the fuel cells, because they set the budget. The car carries 90-litre PVC bladders on a six-year replacement cycle, and PistonHeads' buying guide puts the job at around £30,000, so the date on the current set is the most useful number in the file. Next the cam belts: two years or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, and an engine-out job. Many owners fit a fresh AP Racing twin-plate clutch at the same time, because the original is not the strongest part of the car and its slave cylinder corrodes if the car has lived outdoors. Ask when the turbochargers last saw fresh oil, since annual changes are what keeps them alive on a car that covers 400 miles a year. Then walk the panels. The body is hand-formed aluminium from Abbey Panels, rearward visibility is close to nonexistent, and parking damage is common and expensive to put right properly. Check whether the unassisted brakes are as built, or whether a servo conversion was done by someone who knew the car. Finally the paperwork: chassis history, right-hand drive or left, and whether Don Law Racing knows the car.

The Story

Driving character

The engine is the surprise. A 3.5-litre V6 in a car this size reads as a compromise until it is running: 550PS at 7,200rpm, 475lb ft at 4,500, and a delivery that Andrew Frankel, the first journalist to test one, described as never intimidating and arriving progressively rather than in one hit. Jaguar quoted 3.6 seconds to 60mph. Road & Track got 4.8, and 210.5mph flat out on a straight road. What nobody expected was the ride. Testers in 1992 kept writing about how well it dealt with broken tarmac, better than plenty of sports saloons, and about a driving position with the pedals and the Nardi wheel square in front of you rather than offset in the Italian manner. The rest asks a lot. It is 2,009mm wide, the steering and pedals are heavy, there is no ABS, first gear is far too tall for traffic and rear visibility is poor. At idle the drivetrain clatters, and one Autocar writer compared the noise to a pail of nuts and bolts poured through a food processor. Car magazine in 1994 found heavy initial understeer followed by snap oversteer. It is a car with two settings and only one of them is happy.

Design

The shape started as a quarter-scale cardboard model Jim Randle built over Christmas 1987. Two mock-ups followed, one reminiscent of the Porsche 956 and one by Keith Helfet drawing on the stillborn XJ13 and Malcolm Sayer's work. Helfet's won because it looked more obviously like a Jaguar. The brief forbade aerodynamic add-ons and asked for the clean functional surfacing of the D-Type and E-Type, so the downforce had to come from underneath. The XJ220 was one of the first road cars built deliberately around underbody venturi, and it makes roughly 3,000lb of downforce at 200mph at a drag coefficient of 0.36. Turning the concept into the production car cost it some drama. The scissor doors went, the wheelbase came down by 200mm, and the intercooler intakes between the doors and the rear wheels grew. Geoff Lawson, Jaguar's design director, insisted the result still had to read as a Jaguar. Details reward a walk around it: Speedline wheels, 17 inches front and 18 rear under enormous 345-section tyres, tail lamps lifted from the Rover 200, and a dashboard that curves round and continues onto the driver's door, where a second binnacle carries four analogue gauges.

Motorsport pedigree

The XJ220 won its class at Le Mans and was not allowed to keep it. Three works XJ220-Cs contested the newly created GT class at the 1993 24 Hours. The car shared by John Nielsen, David Brabham and David Coulthard beat the Porsches by two laps, while the other two broke their engines. The dispute had started before the race. The Jaguars had passed scrutineering and completed a day of qualifying when senior steward Alain Bertaut objected that they were running without catalytic converters, which Jaguar had omitted because the cars were entered under IMSA GT rules. They raced under appeal. IMSA wrote to the ACO confirming the cars complied with IMSA regulations, and Jaguar won the appeal with FIA support. The ACO disqualified them anyway, on the ground that the appeal had not been filed within the deadline. A procedural ruling erased a class win nobody disputed on the road. There was more, though less of it. The XJ220-C won on debut at Silverstone with Win Percy. A road car ran the 1993 Italian GT Championship in Martini colours. Privateers took XJ220-Cs back to Le Mans in 1995, where Richard Piper, Tiff Needell and James Weaver ran fourth until the engine let go overnight.

In culture

The number did the work. Guinness listed the 217.1mph Nardo run as the fastest speed ever recorded by a standard production car in its 1994 through 1999 editions, which put the XJ220 in front of a far larger audience than ever saw one move. Core Design got there first. Its Jaguar XJ220 racing game shipped for the Amiga in 1992 with 36 tracks and a Mega-CD port the following year, commissioned specifically to answer Gremlin's Lotus series. Gran Turismo picked the car up from GT2 onwards, and it has appeared in every mainline entry except GT Sport, arriving in GT7 with the April 2023 update. Diana, Princess of Wales, opened the Bloxham factory and unveiled the first production car in October 1991. The German press filed the whole project under failure, Auto Motor und Sport still calling it the giant flop in 2014. That verdict has softened as the values have risen, and the car now reads less like a fiasco than like the last British attempt at building the fastest car in the world with a chequebook and a committee of volunteers.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The XJ220 spent two decades as the cheapest way into the 1990s supercar club, and that is over. Cars that changed hands for the £127,550 Jaguar accepted for its last unsold stock in 1997 now trade between roughly £300,000 and £550,000 at public auction, and the run of results since 2020 shows a median above £420,000. The argument for the car has changed as well. For years the V6 was held against it, as though Jaguar had been caught in a lie. The current view is that a 550PS twin-turbo six pulling to 212mph is exactly the sort of engineering a collector should want, and that the V12 concept is simply a different car that never existed. Inside the generation the hierarchy is short and steep. The six carbon-bodied XJ220S cars built by TWR sit at the top and rarely surface. Below them, right-hand-drive cars are the scarce ones, 69 of the run by PistonHeads' count, and cars with a documented Don Law history carry a clear premium over the many examples that spent thirty years in climate-controlled storage doing nothing at all.

Which one to look for

There is really one car, and then a short tail of specials. The standard XJ220 is what the run consists of, and it is the car every figure on this page describes. Above it sit six XJ220S road cars built by TWR: one-piece carbon front and rear bodywork, the JV6 turned up to 700PS, the pop-up headlamps replaced by fixed perspex-covered units, Kevlar seats and no leather. They are road-legal XJ220-Cs and they are the grail. The XJ220-C itself was launched at Autosport International in January 1993 and won first time out at Silverstone with Win Percy driving, and three works cars then went to Le Mans. One car stands entirely alone: the 1995 XJ220 Pininfarina, rebodied by Pininfarina and built by Coggiola for Prince Jefri of Brunei, with fixed headlamps, a double-vane rear wing and dark green paint. Below all of it are the ten prototype and development cars, one of which sits in the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust collection and one of which, chassis 004, Don Law used to develop the modern tyre.

XJ220 · 1992–1994

The production car and effectively the whole run. Bonded aluminium honeycomb chassis with an integral roll cage, hand-formed aluminium panels by Abbey Panels, a 3,498cc twin-turbo Jaguar/TWR JV6 V6 rated at 550PS at 7,200rpm, a five-speed FF Developments transaxle and rear-wheel drive. No ABS and no brake servo. 1,470kg, 212.3mph in standard trim, and 4,930mm long by 2,009mm wide.

XJ220 Pininfarina · 1995

A single car built for Prince Jefri of Brunei. Rebodied to a Pininfarina design by the coachbuilder Coggiola, with fixed headlamps in place of the pop-ups, new tail lamps, a redesigned double-vane rear wing, a new interior package and dark green paint.

XJ220-C · 1993

The racing car, launched at Autosport International in January 1993 for FISA GT competition. Won first time out at Silverstone in the BRDC National Sports GT Challenge with Win Percy driving. Three works cars ran the 1993 Le Mans 24 Hours and one won the GT class before the ACO disqualified all three over catalytic converters on a procedural technicality.

The one to want. TWR's road-going version of the XJ220-C race car: one-piece carbon-fibre front and rear bodywork, the JV6 taken to 700PS, the pop-up headlamps replaced by fixed perspex-covered units, Kevlar seats and the leather trim deleted. Colin Goodwin lapped Millbrook at a 180.4mph average in one for Autocar in June 1995.

What owning one is like

Owning one is mostly a negotiation with its size. At 2,009mm across it will not fit through traffic restrictors, and it is wider than the lane markings on plenty of British roads. Rear visibility is close to theoretical, which is why so many carry kerb and gatepost marks somewhere on that hand-formed aluminium. Once you accept that you park it nose-in and leave the reversing to somebody standing behind you, the rest is manageable. The V6 is a tough engine, and owners who change the oil annually rarely have turbocharger trouble. The brakes want warming before they work properly, which caught out enough early owners that some had servos fitted. The cabin gets hot under the fixed glass roof, which has no shade. The real budgeting items are the fuel bladders on a six-year cycle and the cam belts every two years, which means the engine comes out regularly whether the car has been used or not. Cars that get driven fare better than cars that sit. The compensation is that the XJ220 is one of the very few 200mph cars of its decade a person can genuinely cover distance in.

Upkeep & parts

Everything routes through one building. Don Law Racing in Staffordshire holds the factory tooling, technical data and parts stock, has worked on every XJ220 built, and is the reason the model is still a usable proposition rather than an ornament. The clearest demonstration is the tyres. Bridgestone had long stopped making the bespoke Expedia S.01 in 255/55 R17 and 345/35 R18, which left owners with a 200mph car and nothing legal to put on it. Don Law took the problem to Bridgestone, which brought in the XJ220's original chief engineer and test driver and spent four months and 17 rubber specifications developing a replacement, tested on Don Law's own pre-production chassis 004. Pirelli separately added a P Zero in the sizes. Budget properly: cam belts every two years or 12,000 miles, a clutch at the same time if the mileage warrants it, and a fuel-cell replacement every six years that PistonHeads' guide puts near £30,000. The car has roughly 3,000 unique parts and no shared platform to draw on, so nothing is a catalogue item. What you are really buying is access to the one workshop that knows it.
