SSC Tuatara

Overview

SSC has been here before, and that is the part people forget. In September 2007 the Ultimate Aero took the Guinness production car record at 256 mph over two runs in opposite directions, which made a small firm in Richland, Washington the fastest carmaker on earth for two years. The Tuatara, announced in 2011 and first delivered in January 2020, was meant to do it again by a wider margin. Jerod Shelby commissioned Jason Castriota, formerly of Pininfarina, and the result is the most aerodynamically serious shape in its class: a drag coefficient of 0.279, cameras where the mirrors should be, and a spine and rear winglets that give the car its name from a New Zealand reptile whose Maori name is usually translated as peaks on the back. Under it sits a 5.9-litre twin-turbocharged flat-plane V8 of SSC's own design, rated at 1,350 hp on pump fuel and 1,750 hp on E85, driving through a seven-speed CIMA automated manual. Everything about the engineering is credible. What happened next was not the engineering's fault, and it is the reason most people know the name.

Nothing on this car is mechanically direct. The 5.9-litre V8 runs on engine management supporting at least three fuel maps, from 91 octane through E85 to methanol, and moving between them is a software matter as much as a hardware one. The gearbox is a seven-speed CIMA automated manual, so there is no clutch pedal and no mechanical shift linkage. The mirrors are cameras and screens. Cabin functions run through a touchscreen. What the car does not have is a hybrid system or all-wheel drive, so the electronics are managing one engine and two driven wheels rather than arbitrating between power sources. That is the only thing keeping it off the top of the scale.

No verified public sale of a Tuatara could be found. The Classic Valuer carries no entry for the model, no auction house has offered one, and classic.com returns nothing to this research. That is not an accident: the run is capped at 100, SSC has never published how many have been built or delivered, and cars move between owners through the factory and specialist brokers rather than in public. Reported prices sit between 1.6 and 1.9 million dollars at launch and around 2 million by 2022, but those are press figures rather than transactions and no band is published here on the strength of them. What can be said is that the two forces on this car pull in opposite directions. It holds the production car speed record and nothing has taken it since January 2021, which is the single most valuable thing a car in this class can own. Against that, the 2020 controversy attached itself to the name permanently and has not come off. Solid and stable is the honest reading until something actually trades in public.

What to watch for
There is no public market, so buying one means dealing with SSC or with a broker who has, and the ordinary auction paper trail does not exist to help you. That puts more weight than usual on establishing what a car actually is. Three specifications share the name and only two of them are road cars. The base Tuatara and the Striker are street legal; the Aggressor is not, has no DOT compliance, runs a roll cage and an unrestricted exhaust, and makes its 2,200 hp on methanol. Confirm which fuel map a car is set up for, because 1,350 hp on 91 octane and 1,750 hp on E85 are the same engine with different plumbing behind them, and the E85 tune brings a supply problem you have to solve wherever you live. Ask about transport history: SSC lost a car in April 2021 when its transporter flipped in Utah in high winds, so a car's journeys matter here more than its mileage. Ask SSC directly what number the car is, because no published register exists. Service is SSC and only SSC, in Richland, Washington, so a car outside North America is a shipping decision before it is a purchase.

The Story

Driving character

Two things define it before anything else: the flat-plane crank and the weight. A flat-plane V8 fires evenly across the banks and revs like two four-cylinders bolted together, which gives the Tuatara a harder, higher, more European voice than the cross-plane American V8s its closest rivals run. Twin turbochargers sit behind that, so the delivery is a thin slice of induction noise followed by a shove that does not stop. At 2,750 lb dry it is several hundred pounds lighter than a Chiron and roughly a tonne under a Nevera, with no all-wheel drive to help, which makes 1,750 hp on E85 a driver's problem rather than a launch control statistic. The seven-speed CIMA automated manual shifts by paddle with none of the smoothing a dual clutch would provide. Visibility is by camera rather than mirror. The cabin is unusually large for the class, claimed to take a six foot five occupant wearing a helmet, and that is not the boast it sounds like: SSC's cars get used at speed on runways, where a driver who fits properly in a helmet is a design requirement rather than a courtesy.

Design

Jason Castriota came from Pininfarina, and the Tuatara is a shape drawn to a number rather than to a mood. The number is a drag coefficient of 0.279, low enough to beat most road cars regardless of class and to comfortably beat everything with this much power. The car is 182.4 inches long and only 42 inches tall, and the whole upper surface is one continuous taper from the canopy back to a tail so narrow it reads as a fuselage rather than a rear deck. Cameras replace the door mirrors, which removes the single worst aerodynamic feature a car has. The name does the rest of the work. A tuatara is a reptile found only in New Zealand and its Maori name is generally translated as peaks on the back, which is exactly what the spine running down the car and the winglets standing off the tail are. Castriota's aerospace references are easy to see: the canopy, the ducted flanks and the way the body narrows behind the cabin all belong to aircraft rather than to cars. Whatever else about this car is contested, the shape is not.

Motorsport pedigree

The Tuatara has never raced and there was never a plan for it to. SSC is a firm of a few dozen people building a car in the low hundreds at most, with no motorsport department, no series that fits a 1,750 hp two-wheel-drive road car, and nothing to gain from balance-of-performance racing where its one advantage would be regulated straight back out. Its competition discipline is the timed record run, which has real rules and a real convention behind it: two passes in opposite directions, averaged, measured by independent equipment. SSC won at it once already, when the Ultimate Aero took the Guinness production car record on 13 September 2007 at 256 mph. The Tuatara's own verified result came on 17 January 2021 at the Kennedy Space Center's launch and landing facility, where the car's owner Larry Caplin ran 279.7 mph north and 286.1 mph south over 2.3 miles for a 282.9 mph average, logged by Racelogic, Life Racing, Garmin and IMRA satellite tracking. On 14 May 2022 the same car and driver managed 295 mph in one direction at the same site, which is a test result rather than a record.

In culture

The Tuatara is the first car to lose a world record to YouTube, and that is what it is known for. On 10 October 2020 SSC announced 331.15 mph in one direction and a 316.11 mph two-way average on Nevada State Route 160 near Pahrump, with Oliver Webb driving, and released video of the run. Within days Shmee150 and Misha Charoudin, among others, had taken the footage apart. The GPS overlay did not agree with the point of view camera. A helicopter appeared to be keeping pace at a speed no helicopter reaches. Timing the car against roadside landmarks, and against the Koenigsegg Agera RS on the same road, produced a figure nearer 280 mph. Then Dewetron, whose measuring equipment SSC had named as validating the run, stated publicly that it had validated nothing, that none of its employees had been present, and that it had not even received the data file. Jerod Shelby conceded the run was ruined, blamed an editing mix-up between two cockpit videos, and invited the people who had dismantled it to attend the re-run. In July 2021 SSC accepted that the original attempt never passed 300 mph.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The Tuatara is the only car in this group that actually holds the record, and it is also the car whose record you have to explain. Both facts are load-bearing. Wikipedia's production car speed record list shows the Tuatara at 455.3 km/h, or 282.9 mph, set on 17 January 2021: a genuine two-way average measured by four independent systems on the Kennedy Space Center's landing facility. Nothing has taken it since. Against that sits October 2020, when SSC claimed 316.11 mph and had to withdraw it. What keeps the car collectible is that the engineering was never the thing that failed. A drag coefficient of 0.279, an in-house 5.9-litre flat-plane V8 making 1,750 hp on E85, and 2,750 lb dry are real numbers from a firm that had already held this record once with the Ultimate Aero. The run is capped at 100 and SSC has never published how many exist, which puts a floor under it. The Striker and the ten-car Aggressor sit above the base car. Whether the market eventually forgives the video is the open question, and it is why the tier reads Solid rather than High.

Which one to look for

Three specifications, and the gap between them is wider than the shared bodywork suggests. The standard Tuatara is the record car: 1,350 hp on 91 octane, 1,750 hp on E85, 2,750 lb dry, Cd 0.279, and the specification in which every verified run was made, including the 282.9 mph two-way average of January 2021 and the 295 mph single-direction pass of May 2022. The Striker is the street-legal track answer, with a large fixed rear wing and dive planes that roughly triple the standard car's downforce, which costs top speed and is meant to. The Aggressor is the one to know about. Ten cars, no DOT compliance and therefore no road use, a racing roll cage, an unrestricted exhaust, an engine taken to 2,200 hp and 1,604 lb-ft on methanol, and around 1,100 lb of downforce at 160 mph. SSC has never quoted a top speed for it, which is the tell: it is a downforce car, not a speed car. The first customer Aggressor was delivered after 2024. For a firm whose entire identity is straight-line speed, building its wildest variant around cornering is an interesting admission.

The street-legal track version. A large fixed rear wing and dive planes raise downforce to roughly three times the standard car's, at the cost of top speed.

What owning one is like

What owning one is like is shaped by how few there are and how new they are. Every Tuatara is a recent car with low mileage, so this is not a story about wear. It is a story about support. SSC builds in Richland, Washington and there is no dealer network, no independent specialist and no parts counter, so anything beyond fluids and tyres is a conversation with the factory. The engine is SSC's own design rather than a modified production V8, which is unusual at this end of the market and means the good machine shop down the road cannot help you. Fuel is the practical daily question: the gap between the 91 octane and E85 calibrations is 400 hp, and running the E85 tune means sourcing E85 reliably, which is straightforward in parts of the United States and close to impossible elsewhere. The cabin is unusually large for the class, which makes the car easier to live with at ordinary speeds than the shape suggests, though the camera mirror system takes adjustment. None of this is discouraging. It is simply what buying from a company this size has always involved.

Upkeep & parts

Everything goes through SSC. The company has been building cars in Richland, Washington since 1999 and has seen two model programmes through to the end, which is more than most of its peers can say, but it remains a small operation and it is the only source for anything Tuatara-specific. Budget for transport to the factory rather than a local visit. The parts that are not bespoke help more than you would expect: brakes, suspension components and the Michelin fitment come from suppliers who serve the whole class, and consumable costs sit roughly where a Chiron's or a Koenigsegg's do. The bespoke parts are the ones to plan around. The 5.9-litre V8 is SSC's own, the seven-speed CIMA gearbox is a specialist item, and the carbon bodywork has no aftermarket at all. Insurance is the recurring line most owners underestimate, particularly on an Aggressor, which is not road registered and sits in a different category entirely. There is no owners club, no registry and no forum, so the community that normally answers these questions for a marque does not exist yet.
