Jaguar D-Type

Overview

The C-Type had won Le Mans twice and was, underneath, a lightened road car. The D-Type was not. Malcolm Sayer, who had spent the war at the Bristol Aeroplane Company, drew a body around an aluminium-alloy monocoque tub, hung a tubular subframe off the front bulkhead to carry the engine and front suspension, and put the fuel in a deformable aviation bag in the tail. In 1954 that was aircraft practice applied to a sports car, and almost nobody else was doing it.

The XK six went in dry-sumped and canted eight and a half degrees over to keep the bonnet line down, which is why every D-Type has that offset bulge. On the Mulsanne in 1954 the car ran 172.8 mph while a 4.9-litre Ferrari managed 160.1.

It lost that first race by less than a lap, then won the next three: 1955, 1956 and 1957. Seventy-one were built, 18 for the works and 53 for customers, and by the end the customers were beating the factory.

A driver in a D-Type is connected to everything by rod, cable and hydraulic line. Three twin-choke Webers on most cars, and on the 1957 3.8 a low-pressure Lucas injection system that is mechanical rather than managed. Coil ignition, a dry-sump oil system with no monitoring beyond a gauge, unassisted rack and pinion, unassisted Dunlop discs. The most sophisticated electrical item aboard is the lighting a 24-hour race demands.

The band below describes a customer D-Type in sound, documented condition with no significant works history. Almost nothing at the top of this market fits that description. XKD 501, the Ecurie Ecosse car that won Le Mans in 1956, sold for $21,780,000 at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2016 and is still the most expensive Jaguar ever sold at auction. No band reaches that and none should try. The recent evidence points down. In March 2025 Broad Arrow sold XKD 403, the 1954 works car that won Reims, at Amelia Island without reserve for $4,295,000 against a $6,500,000 to $8,500,000 estimate. Later in 2025 the never-raced XKD 551 made CHF 5,181,250, about $6,430,000, at Broad Arrow's Zurich sale, below its own low estimate. A 1955 car went unsold at RM Sotheby's Monterey in 2025 against a $4.5 million to $5.5 million estimate. Blue-chip stands. The trajectory reads cooling because three of the four most recent public data points either failed to sell or landed under estimate, one of them by a wide margin and with no reserve to hide behind.

What to watch for
Start with the tub, because it is the car. The D-Type is a monocoque, and unlike the C-Type's spaceframe it cannot simply be re-tubed: a damaged or corroded centre section is either repaired by one of the handful of people who can do it or replaced, and a replaced tub changes what you own. Establish what is original before anything else. The earliest works cars used magnesium alloy for the tub, which is expensive, corrodes enthusiastically and is difficult to repair. Jaguar moved to steel front subframes and aluminium for customer cars. Know which you are looking at. Chassis numbers run XKD, and Coventry Racers publishes a page on each surviving car. Use it. Engines were swapped freely in period, 3.4 for 3.8 and back again, and five-speed gearboxes were fitted to cars that raced on into the 1960s, so numbers-matching is rarer here than in almost any road-car market and its absence is not automatically a problem. Finally, count carefully. Seventy-one is the figure the register supports, and Jaguar itself has been quoted claiming 75. The gap is not sinister, but it is where trouble starts.

The Story

Driving character

Everything about the way a D-Type drives comes from it being narrow. The tub is elliptical and small in section because Sayer wanted the frontal area down, so the driver sits low and enclosed with the offset bonnet bulge in view, and the car feels like something you wear rather than sit in. The engine is the XK six in its hardest period state: dry-sumped, canted over, breathing through three Webers that sit close enough to dominate the noise. It pulls from low revs like every XK, then keeps going in a way the road cars never quite do. The steering is unassisted rack and pinion inherited from the C-Type, and the brakes are the same Dunlop discs, by now developed to the point where drivers used braking as the overtaking tool rather than a way of surviving the corner. What surprises people who get to drive one is the stability. A D-Type at 170 mph down the Mulsanne in 1954 was doing something no other car in the race could do, and it was the aerodynamics rather than the power that made it possible. The fin is not decoration.

Design

Sayer worked from mathematics and a slide rule rather than a sketch pad, and the D-Type is the clearest result. The body exists to cut drag and frontal area, and every feature on it is doing a job. The tub is the design, not a platform for one. Sheet aluminium alloy formed into an elliptical section that is both the structure and the outer skin, with a tubular subframe attached to the front bulkhead for the engine and front suspension. The bonnet bulge is offset because the engine is canted, and Philip Porter argues the cant was less about frontal area than about clearing the ram pipes on three Weber carburettors. The fin behind the driver is an aerodynamic stabiliser for the Mulsanne. The 1955 long nose extended the car by seven and a half inches and folded fin and headrest into one form. That shape did not stop with the racing. The E-Type of 1961 took its body language and a great many construction details directly from this car, which is how a Le Mans prototype ended up defining a road car for a decade.

Motorsport pedigree

Three consecutive Le Mans wins. The 1954 debut was lost by less than a lap after fuel filter blockages, though the D-Type ran 172.8 mph on the Mulsanne against the winning Ferrari's 160.1. Reims fell three weeks later, and Sebring in 1955 went to Hawthorn and Walters in a works car lent to Cunningham. 1955 is the win that carries a shadow. Hawthorn led Fangio's Mercedes when, at the end of lap 35, he braked for the pits, Macklin's Austin-Healey swerved, and Levegh's 300 SLR was launched into the spectator enclosure. Levegh and more than 80 spectators died, and the official inquiry blamed no driver. The race was not stopped. Mercedes withdrew in the night while running first and third, asked Jaguar to do the same, and Jaguar declined and won with Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb. 1956 belonged to a privateer. Ecurie Ecosse of Edinburgh took XKD 501 to victory at 104.47 mph while the works team came sixth with a cracked injection pipe, setting fastest lap on the way. 1957 was the rout. D-Types finished first, second, third, fourth and sixth, Ecurie Ecosse taking the top two places in ex-works cars, with Jaguar's own team already withdrawn. The same team then took fourth, fifth and sixth at Monza's Race of Two Worlds against Indianapolis roadsters. The three-litre rule for 1958 ended it. The D-Type never took another Le Mans podium.

In culture

The D-Type carries two stories that pull in opposite directions, and both are true. One is 11 June 1955, still the deadliest day in motorsport and one no account of this car can leave out. Jaguar won it, having been asked by Mercedes to withdraw and having said no. What that decision means has been argued over for seventy years, and this page does not settle it. The other is Ecurie Ecosse. A small team run from a garage in Edinburgh by an accountant called David Murray beat the works entries of Jaguar, Aston Martin and Ferrari at Le Mans in 1956, then came back in 1957 and finished first and second. The metallic flag blue of those cars is one of the few liveries in racing that people recognise before they recognise the car. There is a third, quieter afterlife. The unsold D-Types became the XKSS, and the E-Type that made Jaguar famous with the public borrowed this car's shape and its construction. The most photographed British car of the 1960s is a Le Mans prototype with the racing taken out.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

Seventy-one cars that won Le Mans three years in a row, and a market that sorts them almost entirely by what they did.

At the top is a single result. XKD 501, the Ecurie Ecosse car that won in 1956 and the first D-Type Jaguar ever supplied to a privateer, took $21,780,000 at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2016 after a fifteen-minute contest between four bidders. It remains the most expensive Jaguar ever sold at auction.

Below that the sorting is less predictable than it looks. In March 2025 Broad Arrow offered XKD 403, a 1954 works car that won Reims and was driven in period by Moss, Rolt, Whitehead, Hawthorn, Bueb and Dewis, without reserve. It made $4,295,000 against a $6.5 million lower estimate. Seven months later an un-raced customer short-nose made the equivalent of $6.43 million in Zurich.

That inversion is worth understanding before buying. A works car carries risk along with its history: rebuilt tubs, replacement engines, decades of hard use. A car that never raced carries none of it, and there are collectors who would rather have the object than the story.

Which one to look for

Two shapes and three engines, and the divisions matter more than usual because they map onto what the car actually did. The 1954 short-nose is the original: separate headrest fairing, separate fin, 3.4 litres on Webers, rated 246 bhp. It came second at Le Mans on debut and won Reims three weeks later. For 1955 the works cars got the long nose, seven and a half inches further forward, with the headrest and fin merged into a single smoothed unit and larger valves in asymmetrical cylinder heads. This is the D-Type people picture, and it won Le Mans in 1955 and 1956. The 1957 cars are the connoisseur's pick. XKD 606, an ex-works long-nose handed to Ecurie Ecosse, ran the 3.8-litre engine on low-pressure Lucas fuel injection and won Le Mans outright, while the sister car XKD 603 took second on 3.4 litres and Webers. One race, both specifications, first and second. The 3.0-litre cars built for the 1958 capacity limit are the exception to all of it. They were unreliable when new and never took another podium. Jaguar's own 2018 Continuation cars, 25 of them offered in either bodywork, are a separate and modern thing again.

3.8-litre · 1957

The last and fastest development, with the XK six taken out to 3,781cc and fed by low-pressure Lucas fuel injection. XKD 606 in this specification won Le Mans outright for Ecurie Ecosse in 1957, heading a Jaguar first, second, third, fourth and sixth.

Long Nose · 1955–1957

What owning one is like

The honest position is that most people who own a D-Type did not buy a car, they bought a chapter of a public history, and everything they do to it becomes part of that history. The mechanical side is more approachable than the reputation suggests. The XK six is the same engine that went into hundreds of thousands of road Jaguars, so rebuilds, machining and consumables are normal work for a specialist. The gearbox is period and heavy. The Dunlop discs are reproduced. Cooling wants watching, as it does on every XK-engined car. The structure is where the money and the anxiety live. The monocoque tub is the car's identity, and corrosion at the panel joints, old accident repairs and the magnesium used in the earliest works cars are all real considerations. A tub that has been replaced is a different proposition from a tub that has been repaired, and the difference is worth millions. Almost all of them still run. These cars were built to survive 24 hours flat out, they proved it repeatedly, and the ones in private hands are used at historic events rather than parked.

Upkeep & parts

Half of a D-Type is a mass-produced Jaguar and half of it is a one-off aeroplane, and the running costs split along exactly that line.

The engine, gearbox and axle come from an industry that has never stopped supporting the XK, so a rebuild is expensive rather than exotic and any competent Jaguar specialist can do the work. Dunlop brake components, Weber parts and XK internals are all available. The 1957 cars add a low-pressure Lucas injection system that fewer people understand and that repays finding someone who does.

The other half has no supplier. Tub repair, panel forming and the front subframe are the province of a handful of specialists in England, and the work is quoted in hours at a bench. Fuel bags are consumable and have to be replaced on a schedule.

Documentation is the compensation. Coventry Racers keeps a per-chassis register covering the C-Type, D-Type, XKSS and Lightweight E-Type, and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust will issue a Heritage Certificate. Between them, an individual car's history is checkable to a degree almost no other 1950s racing car can match.
