Jaguar C-Type

Overview

Jaguar went to Le Mans in 1950 with three road-going XK120s and came away with a lesson. The quickest of them held second for two hours and was still third in the 21st hour when the clutch let go, destroyed by a driver using the gears to slow a car whose brakes had already gone. William Lyons and William Heynes concluded they needed something built for the job.

What they produced took barely six months. The C-Type, officially the XK120-C with the C for Competition, kept the XK120's twin-cam six and much of its front suspension and hung them on a triangulated tubular spaceframe of Heynes's design, under an aluminium body shaped by Heynes, Bob Knight and Malcolm Sayer. It had rack-and-pinion steering, a Jaguar first, and no carpets, no weather gear and no door handles.

It won Le Mans at the first attempt in 1951. Fifty-three were built and 43 of them went to private owners, most of them American, which is the part people forget: this was a Le Mans winner you could order.

There is no electrical system on this car that makes a decision. Twin SU carburettors on the early cars, three Weber 40DCO3s on the 1953 works specification, coil ignition, a mechanical fuel pump and a rev counter driven off the engine. Steering is unassisted rack and pinion, brakes are unassisted whether they are drums or the Dunlop discs, and the throttle is a rod. The only thing on board that a modern owner would call electronics is the ignition and the lamps that let it run at night.

Two different markets share one name here, and the band below describes only the larger one: a customer C-Type with good documentation and no significant works race history. The other market is provenance. XKC 052, one of three works lightweights and fourth at Le Mans in 1953, took $13,200,000 at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2015. An unrestored, Le Mans-raced car made 5,715,580 pounds at Bonhams in Monaco in May 2016. Nothing in the band applies to cars like those. For ordinary examples the recent record is thinner and softer than the headline numbers suggest. XKC 014, a restored customer car, sold for $5,285,000 at Bonhams Amelia Island in March 2020 against a $6.5 million to $7.5 million estimate. A C-Type failed to sell at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2023 with a 4.0 to 4.5 million pound estimate, and another failed at Gooding's Pebble Beach sale in August 2025 estimated at $3.5 million to $4.25 million. Blue-chip is not in question. The direction is, which is why the trajectory here reads cooling rather than stable.

What to watch for
Identity is the entire transaction. Fifty-three cars exist, every one of them is known, and Coventry Racers keeps a page on each with photographs and a history, so the first hour of any purchase is spent matching chassis, engine and body numbers against a published record rather than against a seller's story. Original alloy bodies carry a K prefix in their own numbering, separate from the XKC chassis number. Learn which panels on the car in front of you are period and which came from a restoration, because almost every C-Type has been rebuilt at least once and several have been rebodied after accidents. The replica question is unavoidable and not shameful. Recreations have been built for decades, and in 2003 Autocar put them at 40,000 pounds against 400,000 for a genuine car. Jaguar Classic itself built eight C-type Continuations from 2021 to the 1953 works specification. All of these are honest cars, and none is a 1950s C-Type. Ask what the car races. An example with current FIA papers and a recent competition history is worth materially more than one that has been static for twenty years.

The Story

Driving character

The C-Type feels less like a modified XK120 than the parts list suggests, and the reason is the steering. Jaguar dropped the road car's recirculating-ball box for a rack and pinion here, the first time it had done so, and the car talks back in a way no XK120 does. The rear axle is located by a transverse torsion bar and trailing arms rather than leaf springs, which takes out the inter-leaf friction and lets the car settle rather than shuffle. The engine is the familiar twin-cam six doing familiar things, which is to say pulling from very low down and going on doing it. On Webers it is harder-edged and noisier through three chokes, and the induction sits close enough to the driver to be part of the experience. The 1953 cars have the party trick, and it is a braking one. Dunlop discs let a C-Type stop from Mulsanne speed in roughly half the distance the drum-braked opposition needed, which is why so much of the overtaking that year happened on the way into corners rather than on the way out.

Design

Malcolm Sayer's first Jaguar, and the shape where his method arrives. Sayer had come from the Bristol Aeroplane Company, and he worked alongside Heynes and Bob Knight rather than alone, but the discipline is his: the body is drawn to a purpose and nothing on it is decoration. It is a barchetta, low and full-width, with a one-piece front section that lifts to expose the whole engine bay and a tail cut off short. There are no exterior door handles, no carpets and no weather equipment, because none of those things helps a car go round Le Mans. The 1952 rebody is the interesting failure. Worried by reports of the 300 SL's speed, Jaguar reprofiled the nose and tail to raise the top end, and unloaded the tail badly enough that the car went light and wandered above 120 mph on the Mulsanne. It was abandoned and the original shape came back for 1953. Every C-Type carries its aluminium panel numbers with a K prefix, which is how originality gets argued today.

Motorsport pedigree

Two Le Mans wins in three attempts. The 1951 debut went to Peter Walker and Peter Whitehead by nine laps, the only one of three works cars to survive. Moss took the lap record down by six seconds before his oil pressure went, then won the RAC Tourist Trophy at Dundrod in September, non-stop, at 83.55 mph. 1952 was the bad year. Jaguar reprofiled the bodies over the winter and rearranged the cooling, and all three cars were out at Le Mans. Norman Dewis found the cause afterwards at MIRA: an undersized water pump pulley cavitating, a header tank too far from the radiator, and tubing too small at 7/8 inch. At Goodwood in August the Nine Hours went to Aston Martin after both leading Jaguars broke. The year was saved at Reims on 29 June, where Moss won the first international race ever taken by a car on disc brakes. 1953 was the season. First, second and fourth at Le Mans, Hamilton and Rolt winning at 105.85 mph, the first time the race had been won above a 100 mph average and the first time it had been won on discs. Moss and Whitehead took the Reims 12 Hours. Jaguar finished second in the World Sportscar Championship, 24 points to Ferrari's 27. Ecurie Ecosse ran seven C-Types to 59 podium finishes.

In culture

The C-Type is the car that made Jaguar mean something outside Britain. Forty-three of the 53 went to private owners, most of them in America, at a moment when American buyers were only just working out what a European sports car was for, and the people who bought them raced them. Phil Hill owned one. Commander Jack Rutherford took his to Daytona Beach and was timed at 134.07 mph during NASCAR Speed Weeks in February 1953. Jaguar knew exactly what it had. The XK140 that followed carried a boot badge reading Winner Le Mans 1951-3, which is a range rather than three wins, and one of the more elegant pieces of factory boasting of the decade. The longer legacy is the brakes. Jaguar's 1953 win, taken on Dunlop discs that let the cars out-brake everything on the road into Mulsanne corner, set off a scramble to fit discs to production cars that reached the XK150 within four years and ordinary saloons within a generation. Very few racing results have changed what a normal driver's car does at a junction.

Why collectors want it

Fifty-three cars, two Le Mans wins, and a hierarchy inside the generation that is steeper than almost anything else in collecting.

At the top sit the three works lightweights built for the 1953 race, with thin-gauge bodywork, Weber carburettors, a fully synchronised gearbox and Dunlop discs. XKC 052, the second of them, ran fourth at Le Mans that year and made $13.2 million at RM Sotheby's in 2015. Below them come cars with genuine period race history of any kind, works or privateer: an unrestored Le Mans runner took 5,715,580 pounds at Bonhams in Monaco in 2016.

Then there is everything else, which is most of them. A well-documented customer car with no famous entry list behind it is a several-million-dollar object rather than a ten-million-dollar one, and that gap is almost entirely about paperwork.

What holds the whole thing up is that the C-Type is not a homologation exercise or a road car with a roll bar. It is the actual machine that beat Ferrari, Talbot and Mercedes at Le Mans, sold over the counter to anyone with the money.

Which one to look for

Three specifications, and the differences are large enough to change what the car is. The 1951 and 1952 cars are the ones that won Le Mans first: twin SU carburettors, around 205 bhp, drum brakes. They are the originals and they carry the debut victory, but they are also the slowest and the least effective at stopping. From mid-1953 the specification changed properly. Three twin-choke Weber 40DCO3 carburettors and high-lift camshafts took output to 220 bhp, the aluminium went thinner, the fuel tank became a rubber bag, some chassis tubes were lightened, and Dunlop discs replaced the drums on all four corners. This is the C-Type most buyers want, and it is the specification Jaguar itself used for the eight Continuation cars it built from 2021. The grail is narrower still. Three works lightweights were prepared for the 1953 race, with a fully synchronised gearbox, a triple-plate clutch and an extra upper link at the rear axle. XKC 052 is the best known of them and the most expensive C-Type ever sold. Nothing else in the generation competes.

Continuation · 2021–2022

What owning one is like

Owning a C-Type is closer to being the custodian of a racing entry than to owning a car. There are 53 of them, every one is known and photographed in a public register, and any work you do becomes part of a record other people will read. Mechanically it is less frightening than it looks. The engine is the same twin-cam six that went into hundreds of thousands of Jaguars, the gearbox is a period unit that is heavy and deliberate rather than fragile, and the drum brakes on the early cars fade exactly as they did in 1951. Cooling is the inherited weakness of the whole XK family, and it is worth knowing that Jaguar's own worst day at Le Mans came from getting a water pump pulley wrong. The real work is in the aluminium. Panels are hand-formed, corrosion collects where alloy meets steel, and old accident repairs hide under paint. Most of these cars have been apart more than once. Most owners drive them, which is the encouraging part. These are not cars that get locked away, and a C-Type with current papers has a full historic calendar available to it.

Upkeep & parts

Nothing about a C-Type is served by a parts counter, and that turns out to matter less than you would think, because the expensive half of the car is a Jaguar.

The XK engine, gearbox and back axle are shared with road cars built in the tens of thousands, so machining, rebuilds and consumables come from an industry that has been supporting them without a break since 1948. Dunlop disc components for the 1953 specification are reproduced. What is genuinely bespoke is the tubular frame, the aluminium body and the fittings, and that means a panel shop rather than a supplier: expect a body restoration to be quoted in hand-forming hours, not part numbers.

Documentation is unusually good for a car this rare. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust issues Heritage Certificates confirming original specification and despatch details, and Coventry Racers maintains a per-chassis register for the C-Type, D-Type, XKSS and Lightweight E-Type that makes an individual car's history checkable in a way most 1950s racing cars are not.
