Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider

Overview

This car exists because an importer in New York asked for it. Max Hoffman handled Alfa Romeo on America's East Coast, he wanted an open version of the Giulietta Sprint coupe, and he backed the request with an order large enough that Milan had to take it seriously.

Alfa set Bertone and Pinin Farina against each other. Franco Scaglione's Bertone proposal was the dramatic one, a sharp nose with covered headlamps and fins carried over from the 2000 Sportiva. Franco Martinengo's Pinin Farina answer was calmer, and it won. Hoffman, who had preferred it all along, bought the losing Bertone prototype for himself.

It broke cover at the Paris Salon in October 1955 with the Sprint's 1,290cc twin cam and a wheelbase cut to 2,200mm, a full 180mm shorter than the saloon's. Hoffman took the first 600 cars built, so Americans were driving Giulietta Spiders while Italians were still waiting for one.

Seven years and roughly 17,000 cars later it stopped, replaced by the Giulia Spider wearing the same body with a bump in the bonnet to clear a taller 1,570cc engine. In between, Alfa Romeo in America stopped meaning racing history and started meaning a car you could buy from a dealer.

Nothing on this car is electronic and very little of it is even electric. Fuelling is one downdraught twin-choke carburettor on a standard Spider and two Weber 40 DCO3 sidedraughts on a Veloce. Ignition is coil, points and distributor. Charging is a dynamo, and the instruments are cable and capillary driven. The Veloce's electric Bendix fuel pump is the only component on the car that stops working when the battery goes flat, and the standard Spider does the same job mechanically. Brakes are hydraulic drums on all four corners with no servo, the steering is worm and roller with no assistance, and the hood goes up by hand. A 1950s mechanic could diagnose the whole thing by ear.

classic.com's average for a standard Spider is $48,854 and for a Spider Veloce $80,005, which is the clearest statement anyone has made about what two Weber carburettors are worth. Its record for the model is $145,000, paid for a 1959 Veloce on 5 April 2022, and its low is $6,988 for a 1962 car in February 2024, which is project money. The Classic Valuer, counting since 2020, puts the median at £37,909 across 143 sold cars at a 68 percent sell-through, with a high of £98,332 and a low of £4,752. Hagerty's guide reckons a museum-grade car tops out around $110,000, adds $40,000 to $50,000 on top for a Veloce, and puts plenty of usable drivers between $50,000 and $60,000. High and stable. The best cars were making six figures before 2022 and still are, and the ordinary end has not moved far in either direction since. Hagerty notes that concours and excellent cars have climbed consistently since 2010, which is a slow trend rather than a run. The band below describes a standard Spider in the condition most buyers will actually be shown, and deliberately excludes every Veloce.

What to watch for
Start by establishing which car it is, because 1959 is a trap. Cars built that year with chassis numbers between 1495.05620 and 1495.07213 are short-wheelbase 750s. Numbers from 1495.08001 to 1495.08537 are the longer 101 chassis, 536 standard cars and 111 Veloces, still wearing 750-style serials. After that the tells are easy. A 750 has an open glovebox with no lid and no round reflectors under the tail lights, and the 101's doors give roughly two inches more opening. Veloce is where the money is and where the stories start. A genuine one reads 750F or 101.07 on the type plate, carries an engine number beginning 1315.3, runs twin Weber 40 DCO3 sidedraughts and an electric fuel pump, and has a blanking plate on the dash where the choke switch would be, because it does not have one. Alfa Romeo's Automobilismo Storico archive will issue a Certificato di Origine, and on this car it is worth waiting for. Then the body. Rockers and the jack points inside them, floors, boot floor, wing bottoms, battery tray and front valance are where these go, and Pininfarina panels are not off a shelf.

The Story

Driving character

The engine is the reason. 1,290cc, alloy block with iron liners, twin overhead cams on chains, hemispherical chambers, five main bearings, and Alfa Romeo was doing all of that in 1955 in a car aimed at people who were not rich. It pulls cleanly from low down and then keeps climbing past 6,000 with a hard, fizzing top end that nothing pushrod could answer. The outputs look modest and feel better than they read. 65 PS at launch, 70 from 1956, 80 from 1958, in something around 860kg. A Veloce's 90 PS moves the car from brisk to genuinely quick, and the two Webers give it a throttle response the single-carburettor car only hints at. What catches people out is the chassis. The short wheelbase and low seat make it far more agile than a mid-1950s roadster has any right to be, the worm and roller steering is light and full of information, and the live rear axle is properly located on trailing links plus a wishbone running to the top of the differential housing rather than left sitting on leaf springs. The drums on all four corners need planning ahead. Nothing else about it does.

Design

Battista Pinin Farina called it la bella signorina, and the restraint is the whole point of it. Scaglione's rejected Bertone proposal had covered headlamps, a pointed nose and tailfins, all descended from the 2000 Sportiva, and that nose went on to inform the Duetto a decade later. Martinengo's answer had none of it: a plain oval shield in a clean grille, one unbroken shoulder line from nose to tail, a low deck with no ornament, headlamps sitting flush in the wings. The prototype wore a panoramic wraparound screen in the manner of the Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider. Production cars got a simpler single curved pane, which was the right call. Hoffman's own contribution, made after he had seen the mock-ups, was wind-down glass instead of side curtains, and that one decision separated the Alfa from every British roadster it was sold against. It shares no body panels with the Sprint or the saloon. The 2,200mm wheelbase, 180mm shorter than the Berlina's, gives it the compact and faintly cheeky proportions that the 50mm longer 101 cars soften very slightly. A factory hardtop was offered and is rarely seen.

Motorsport pedigree

The Spider raced, and it raced where it mattered most to Alfa Romeo's American ambitions. In March 1957 a 1956 Spider Veloce ordered by Jake Kaplan, an Alfa dealer in Providence, Rhode Island, through Max Hoffman's New York operation, won its class at the Sebring 12 Hours. That was the first class win Alfa Romeo had taken in FIA competition on American soil, and the same car came back in 1958 and finished second in class. In race trim the 1,290cc twin cam was giving around 125hp at 7,000 rpm. Behind that sat a purpose-built car. The 750G, usually called the Sebring, was commissioned by Hoffman for exactly this work: a reinforced lightweight chassis, aluminium panels, doors and trim, no exterior handles, a Conrero-prepared engine quoted at 120hp and a five-speed close-ratio gearbox. Only 24 were built and few survive. Consalvo Sanesi, Alfa's own test driver, campaigned one through the Targa Florio, the Giro di Sicilia and the Mille Miglia in 1956. The Spider was homologated for Group GT from March 1958, and American club racers took it from there.

In culture

Italian cinema found this car before anybody else did. Alfa Romeo's own heritage archive credits Fellini with putting a Giulietta Spider into La Dolce Vita and Antonioni with handing one to Alain Delon in L'Eclisse, which is about the best run of casting a 1950s roadster could hope for. It aged into a different sort of role. In The Day of the Jackal, Edward Fox's assassin crosses Europe in a white 1961 Giulietta Spider and then spray-paints it blue in a forest clearing once the police have the description, which is the scene most people remember the car from. Nearly thirty years after that, Anthony Minghella cast a 1956 750D Spider in The Talented Mr. Ripley, where it belongs to Freddie Miles and carries Philip Seymour Hoffman's contempt around the Bay of Naples. The quieter legacy is commercial. Before this car, Alfa Romeo in America meant pre-war machinery and Grand Prix results that had happened to somebody else. After it, Alfa Romeo meant a car a doctor in New England ordered from a showroom, which is the foundation every Alfa sold there since has stood on.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

Two things hold this car up. The shape is one of Pinin Farina's best and has never needed defending. Underneath it sits a genuine Alfa Romeo twin cam, all alloy, chains rather than belts, five main bearings, hemispherical chambers, in a car weighing about 860kg. In 1955 that was exotic engineering sold to ordinary buyers, and it still reads that way.

The hierarchy inside the model is mostly about carburettors. A Spider Veloce runs two sidedraught Webers, 9.5:1 compression and 90 PS, and averages $80,005 on classic.com against $48,854 for a standard car. The record is $145,000, paid for a 1959 Veloce in April 2022. Only 2,796 Veloces were built against roughly 14,200 standard Spiders, so the gap is scarcity as much as speed.

Below that runs a quieter preference for the short-wheelbase 750 cars, the passo corto, which Italian dealers price the way Porsche people price a pre-A. And below all of it is an ordinary 101 Spider: still beautiful, still a proper twin cam, and the cheapest route into a shape that costs three times as much wearing a different badge.

Which one to look for

The one to want is a Spider Veloce and the argument is not close. Two sidedraught twin-choke Webers, 9.5:1 compression, 90 PS at 6,000 rpm and 180km/h against the standard car's 165, in a body that weighs the same. 2,796 were built across both series. After that it divides by series rather than badge. The 750 cars, 1955 to 1959, are the passo corto: 2,200mm wheelbase, a dashboard pressed from sheet metal with a thin vinyl pad on top, a glovebox with no lid, a two-spoke wheel with a horn ring, and on the earliest examples no quarter lights at all. Purists pay for them. Note that the 80 PS engine arrived in 1958, so a late 750 is the strongest standard Spider of the lot. The 101 cars from September 1959 gained 50mm of wheelbase, longer doors, a glovebox lid and round reflectors under new tail lights. They are the easier car to live with. The 1961 Series III added larger tail lights, an ashtray by the shifter and a lighter on the dash. Above everything sits the 750G, Hoffman's competition Spider. 24 were built. You do not go looking for one, you hear about one.

101 Series (Series II) · 1959–1961

Shown at Frankfurt in September 1959 and the easier car to live with. The wheelbase grew 50mm to 2,250mm and the doors grew with it, giving roughly two inches more opening, which matters more than it sounds when you are climbing into a car this low. Round reflectors appeared beneath revised tail lights, and the glove compartment finally got a lid. Mechanically it carried on with the 80 PS 1,290cc twin cam introduced in 1958 rather than introducing anything itself, so the 101 buys you access and detail rather than pace. It is the version most buyers will be offered, and there is nothing second-rate about it.

750 Series · 1955–1959

The short-wheelbase car, and the one Italian dealers call the passo corto. 2,200mm between the axles, a dashboard pressed from sheet metal with a thin black vinyl pad laid on top, a glove compartment with no lid, and a two-spoke steering wheel with a horn ring. The earliest cars have roll-down windows but no quarter lights at all; fixed quarter lights arrived in 1957, though Alfa kept fitting old-pattern doors on occasion as late as 1959. The engine climbed through the run: 65 PS at 6,000 rpm at launch on 8.0:1 compression, 70 PS from 1956, then 80 PS at 6,300 rpm on 8.5:1 from 1958, which makes a late 750 the strongest standard Spider of the whole generation and the shortest wheelbase in the range at the same time.

750G Spider Competizione · 1956–1957

The competition Spider, usually called the Sebring, and the rarest thing wearing this body. Max Hoffman commissioned it to go racing in America and promote the road car while it did. It has a reinforced lightweight chassis, aluminium body panels, doors and trim, no exterior door handles, a wraparound competition screen, an alloy panel covering the passenger seat, a Conrero-prepared 1,290cc engine quoted at 120hp, and a five-speed close-ratio gearbox at a time when the road cars had four speeds. Consalvo Sanesi, Alfa Romeo's own test driver, campaigned one through the 1956 Targa Florio, Giro di Sicilia and Mille Miglia. It is not a car anybody goes shopping for. It is one you hear about.

Series III · 1961–1962

The last of them, and a detail update rather than a redesign. Larger tail lights are the identifying change from outside. Inside, an ashtray appeared on the floor next to the shifter and a cigarette lighter on the dashboard, which is a small thing that dates the car precisely. Everything else carries over from the 101: 2,250mm wheelbase, 80 PS, glovebox lid, drum brakes on all four corners. Production ran out in 1962 when the Giulia Spider took over the same Pininfarina body, and you tell the two apart instantly by the bump in the Giulia's bonnet with its faux chromed vent, put there to clear the taller 1,570cc engine.

Spider Veloce · 1956–1962

The one to want. Two sidedraught twin-choke Weber carburettors, 9.5:1 compression, 90 PS at 6,000 rpm and 180km/h, in a body weighing the same as the standard car's. It ran the whole length of the generation, in 750 bodywork first and 101 bodywork afterwards, so a Veloce is not a series, it is an engine specification you find in either. Identification matters here more than anywhere else on the car. A genuine one reads 750F or 101.07 on the type plate, carries an engine number beginning 1315.3, runs twin Weber 40 DCO3 sidedraughts fed by an electric fuel pump, and has a blanking plate on the dashboard where the choke switch sits on a standard car, because a Veloce has no choke.

What owning one is like

Rust is the whole conversation, and it helps to know the running order before you look. Rocker panels and the jack points inside them, floor pans, the boot floor, the bottoms of the wings, the battery tray and the front valance are the standard casualty list, and the surround at the base of the windscreen is worth a torch as well. The bodies were built by Pininfarina and share nothing with the Sprint or the saloon, so a rotten one is a fabrication project rather than a shopping trip. Electrics are the second theme. The looms are thin by modern standards and the dynamo and regulator are period-typical, so most cars that get driven regularly have had some of it renewed. That work is cheap next to steel. The mechanicals are the easy part and always have been. The twin cam is stout, thoroughly understood and rebuildable by any Alfa specialist, the four-speed is straightforward, and drum brakes are simple to keep honest. People drive sorted Giulietta Spiders across countries, which tells you most of what you need to know about how well the engineering has aged.

Upkeep & parts

Mechanical parts are genuinely good. The 1,290cc twin cam ran across the whole Giulietta range and on into the early Giulias, so pistons, bearings, gaskets, chains and clutch parts sit on shelves at Classic Alfa in the UK and Centerline International in Colorado, and any Alfa specialist can rebuild one.

Body and trim are where the money goes. Pininfarina panels, hood frames, screen rubbers, brightwork and the 750-specific dashboard and door fittings are reproduced in small batches or not at all. The 750 and 101 differences catch people out constantly: doors, glovebox, tail lamps and wheelbase all changed in September 1959, so a part that fits one will not fit the other. Order the right series part the first time and the bill halves.

Knowledge is easier to find than parts. The Giulietta Register covers 750 and 101 cars worldwide, the 750-101 Series discussion group runs several hundred owners deep on identification and restoration detail, and Alfa Romeo's Automobilismo Storico archive will confirm what actually left the factory under a given chassis number. Join before you buy rather than after. It costs almost nothing and saves a great deal.
