Toyota Celica A60

Overview

Toyota announced the third Celica on 2 July 1981 and had it in Japanese showrooms the same month. The shape did the talking. Flat surfaces, hard creases, and semi-retractable headlamps Toyota called rise-up units, which lay flush with the bonnet until you needed them. The second-generation car had been drawn in California to look American. This one looks like it was drawn with a set square, and it is the sharper piece of work for it.

Mechanically it stayed exactly where the Celica had always been. Front engine, rear-wheel drive, four cylinders, a notchback coupe and a three-door liftback, and a grade ladder running from a plain carburettor 1.8 in Japan up to fuel-injected twin-cams. North America got one engine for the entire run, the 2.4-litre four that also went into Hilux pickups, which says most of what needs saying about how Toyota read that market in 1982.

Two things then happened to this shell that no other Celica generation can claim. Toyota Team Europe built 200 road cars from it to satisfy Group B and took the result to Africa, where it won the Safari Rally three years running. And in August 1985 the Celica switched to front-wheel drive and never went back, which makes this the last rear-drive one.

Fuel and spark are the only places a computer is involved, and even that depends on which car you are standing in front of. Japan and Europe had electronic injection on the twin-cams from launch, the 3T-GTE turbo runs Toyota's own injection and ignition management, and North American cars moved from the carburetted 22R to the injected 22R-E for 1983. The 1.8-litre 1S-U kept its carburettor throughout. Everything else is mechanical: cable throttle, hydraulic clutch and brakes with a vacuum servo, no anti-lock, no traction control, no stability system, and nothing to plug a scan tool into. A 22R-E engine management box of this vintage can be diagnosed with a test light, a multimeter and the factory manual.

Tracked sales put the third generation at an average just over $13,000, with the GT-S a little above that at around $14,750. The floor is genuinely low: $2,084 for a 1984 ST project in August 2025 and $4,000 for a 1983 GT-S in September 2024. The ceiling has moved a long way, though. The highest recorded sale is $44,251 for a 1985 GT-S on 31 July 2025, which is low-mileage convertible money rather than the price of a good coupe. The band below describes the ordinary car. The Japanese GT-TS homologation special is a separate market with almost no public sales to price it against.

What to watch for
Establish which car you are looking at before anything else. Pop-up headlamps in a body-coloured nose mean a car built before August 1983. Conventional retractable lamps set into a blacked-out front panel mean the facelift, the car Japanese owners call the Black Mask. In North America the badge matters more than the year: ST and GT cars run a live rear axle, while the GT-S added independent rear suspension, fender flares and wider wheels and tyres. Then look for rust, in the order it actually appears. The base of the windscreen frame first, especially where somebody replaced the glass badly thirty years ago. Front wing bottoms where they meet the doors. Sills behind the rear wheels. Rear arches, then the boot or hatch floor. Strut towers last, because that is the one that ends the conversation rather than starting a negotiation. The mechanical warning here is specific, and it is the reverse of the second-generation car's. From 1983 the 22R and 22R-E use a single-row timing chain on plastic guides. The guides go brittle, break up, and let the chain saw into the aluminium timing cover until coolant finds its way into the oil. A rattle on a cold start is the tell. Budget for the job rather than hoping.

The Story

Driving character

An American A60 is unhurried and completely unbothered, which is its own kind of pleasure. The 2.4 makes its torque low down and runs out of interest early, so you short-shift, sit at 3,000rpm and let it pull. The five-speed is light and a little vague in the way Toyota gearboxes of the period were, the clutch asks nothing of your left leg, and the car never once feels like it is trying to catch you out. A GT-S with the independent rear end is noticeably better sorted over broken surfaces than the live-axle cars, which patter and hop where the GT-S simply gets on with it. The Japanese cars are a different proposition. A 4A-GE wants 7,000rpm and pays you for going there, and it is the same engine, in the same years, that made the AE86 famous. The 3T-GTE turbo is the odd one out, lazy and then suddenly forceful, more period curiosity than good engine. What every version shares is the driving position. You sit low behind a flat dashboard with both front wing tops in view, which makes the car easy to place and makes it feel smaller than it measures.

Design

This is Toyota at its most geometric. The A60 is assembled from flat panels and hard folds, with a nose that drops away in a straight line and a belt line that runs dead level from the headlamps to the tail lamps. Calty handled the styling, as it had on the car before, but the result is the opposite of the soft American shape it replaced. The launch cars carry the detail worth knowing. Toyota called the headlamps rise-up units: semi-retractable, sitting flush with the bonnet surface when they are down so the nose keeps its line, which was as much about drag as about theatre. In August 1983 they gave way to conventional fully retractable lamps set into a front panel finished in black along with the grille and the side markers. Japanese enthusiasts have called the facelift the Black Mask ever since, and the two noses give one car two quite different faces. Fender mirrors went at the same facelift, replaced by door mirrors, which dates a Japanese-market car across a car park. The liftback is the shape the generation is remembered by, but the notchback coupe is the cleaner piece of drawing and always was.

Motorsport pedigree

This is the Celica that finally won something. Toyota Team Europe built a Group 4 car around the naturally aspirated 2000 GT, the RA63, and it won first time out: the 1982 Motogard Rally of New Zealand, Bjorn Waldegard first and Per Eklund second, a works one-two on debut. Then came Group B. The rules asked for 200 road cars, so Toyota built 200 GT-TS Celicas plus twenty evolution rally versions, and TTE developed a 2,090cc version of the 4T-GTE twin-cam turbo making around 370 horsepower at 8,000rpm through a KKK blower. Rear-wheel drive, in a class the Audi Quattro had already made four-wheel drive. On tarmac and forest gravel that was fatal. On the roughest events in the world it was an advantage, because the car was simple, strong and repairable a long way from anywhere. So the Celica Twin-Cam Turbo went to Africa and stayed. Waldegard won the Rallye Cote d'Ivoire in October 1983, then the Safari in 1984. Juha Kankkunen took both in 1985, Waldegard both again in 1986. Six world championship wins, every one of them African, which is where the King of Africa nickname comes from. Group B was abolished at the end of that season, and Toyota's next rally Celica drove all four wheels.

In culture

The A60's cultural life is a rally car's. The Twin-Cam Turbo in its white works colours, mud to the window line, sideways on a Kenyan road, is one of the defining images of Group B, and it is the reason most people under fifty recognise this shape at all. Scale-model makers keep it going: the 1984 and 1985 Safari winners are still catalogue items in 1/24, which is not something you can say about many rear-drive Toyotas. The road car had a quieter time of it. It sold in ordinary numbers, was used as ordinary transport, and turns up in period American film and television as set dressing rather than as anything anyone quotes. Toyota itself has been the most consistent keeper of the flame, running the TA64 at Goodwood and holding it in the heritage fleet. In Japan the generation kept a name rather than a role. Ask an owner about a Black Mask and they will know exactly which Celica you mean, and roughly what you think of it.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

For most of its life this was a used Toyota and the market treated it accordingly. Rust took the majority, and the cars that reached 2026 did so by accident rather than by anyone's intention. No production total for the generation has ever been published, so nobody can tell you how thin the ground is, but tracked sales still run from a two-thousand-dollar project up through the low teens for something honest, which tells you where the floor sits.

The argument is that one shell carries both the end of a line and the start of a legend. Every Celica after this one drives its front wheels. Every Celica rally car after it has four-wheel drive. This is the last rear-drive one, and its competition record is not a footnote: three Safari Rally wins and three Ivory Coast wins between 1983 and 1986, all on two driven wheels, against cars with twice the traction.

The hierarchy sorts itself quickly. The Japanese GT-TS homologation car is the grail and is close to unfindable. Below it sit the Japanese turbo GT-T and the 4A-GE twin-cams. Then the North American GT-S, which is the version most buyers will actually meet, with the ASC convertible slightly above it on novelty rather than on merit.

Which one to look for

The one to want almost certainly is not for sale. The GT-TS is the Group B homologation car, built in Japan in the 200 units the rules demanded, carrying a 1,791cc 4T-GTEU turbo twin-cam and a deliberately plain specification because its only job was to make the works car legal. Most were used up. Finding one outside Japan is a project rather than a search. Below it, Japan had everything worth having. The 1800 GT-T arrived in the autumn of 1982 with the 3T-GTE turbo, and the 1983 facelift brought the 1600 GT-R with the 4A-GE, the same twin-cam that makes the AE86 what it is. Either one turns the A60 into a car worth revving out. North America got none of that and one engine instead. Within that, the GT-S is the pick: independent rear suspension, fender flares, wider wheels, and fuel injection from 1983. The ASC convertible is built on the GT-S and is genuinely scarce, roughly 200 cars for the 1984 model year and 4,248 for 1985. Nine of those were shipped back across the Pacific and sold in Japan in November 1985. The plain ST is the cheap way in and a perfectly good car, just not the interesting one.

GT

The performance grade, and as on the previous Celica it means two different cars. In Japan and Europe the GT carries a twin-cam, the 2.0-litre 18R-G at launch and later the 1.6-litre 4A-GE. In North America it is a trim level above the ST with the same 2.4-litre four, the five-speed and the liftback body option.

GT-R · 1983-1985

Post-facelift Japanese 1600 GT-R, powered by the 4A-GE twin-cam. The same engine, in the same years, that makes the AE86 what it is, in a heavier and more comfortable rear-drive coupe. The connoisseur's naturally aspirated pick of the generation.

GT-S · 1982-1985

The North American sporting Celica, and the one most buyers will actually meet. Independent rear suspension in place of the live axle, fender flares, wider wheels and tyres, and fuel injection from 1983. It began life as an S package on the GT for 1982 and became a standalone trim badged GT-S.

GT-S Convertible · 1984-1985

The only open A60, and it was not built by Toyota. Finished bodies were shipped to American Sunroof Company in Long Beach, California, which cut the roof off and engineered the folding top. Rare when new and rarer now, and it is where the top of the generation's market currently sits.

GT-T · 1982-1985

Japan's turbocharged Celica, and the first turbo Celica of any kind. The 1.8-litre 3T-GTE twin-cam turbo replaced the 2.0-litre 18R-G at the top of the Japanese range. Laggy and then suddenly forceful, which is exactly what an early-1980s Japanese turbo felt like.

GT-TS

The Group B homologation car, and the grail of the generation. Built to the 200 units the regulations demanded, with a 1,791cc 4T-GTEU turbo twin-cam and a deliberately plain specification, because its only job was to make the works Celica Twin-Cam Turbo legal. Toyota Team Europe then built twenty evolution rally cars on top of it. Most road cars were used up, rallied or rusted; survivors are genuinely rare.

ST

The volume grade worldwide and the only one below GT in North America. In America it is a 2.4-litre car on a live rear axle, plainly trimmed and honestly built. The cheapest way into the generation today and a better-looking car than its reputation suggests.

SV

Japanese entry grade, carburettor 1.8-litre 1S-U, minimal equipment. The grade that explains how the A60 sold in the volumes it did at home, and the one nobody kept.

SX

Japanese grade sitting above ST, pitched at buyers who wanted the shape and the equipment without the twin-cam. Continued after the 1983 facelift on the 1.8-litre 1S-U.

What owning one is like

Two very different cars share one bodyshell here. The running gear is Toyota at its most indestructible: the 22R family went into pickups by the million, the gearboxes and axles are over-engineered for the power on offer, and people genuinely did put enormous mileages on these without doing much beyond oil and filters. The bodyshell is why so few are left. Water gets into the base of the windscreen frame and works outwards, front wings rot where they meet the doors, sills go behind the rear wheels, and the rear arches and boot floor follow. Strut towers are the one that turns a project into a parts car. Cars that spent winters in salt are usually worse than they look in photographs. The one mechanical item to take seriously is the timing chain on 1983-onwards 22R and 22R-E engines. The plastic guides embrittle and break up, the chain then wears through the aluminium timing cover, and coolant ends up in the sump. It is a known job with a known fix and the noise gives you fair warning, but it is not something to put off. After that it is trim. Interior plastics, lenses, badges and the Celica-specific brightwork are what stall a restoration, not anything under the bonnet.

Upkeep & parts

Mechanically this is one of the cheapest 1980s classics to keep on the road. The 22R and 22R-E share their parts bin with the Hilux and the 4Runner, so filters, gaskets, water pumps, clutches and complete timing sets are ordinary counter stock, and LC Engineering has been building and supplying these engines for decades. A timing chain kit with steel-backed guides costs less than a set of tyres.

Body and trim is the other half of the budget, and the ratio is the reverse of most classics of the era. Set aside serious money for metalwork and very little for mechanicals. ToyHead Auto keeps a dedicated 1982 to 1985 Celica section, which is the first stop for the small parts nobody reproduces, and the forums are where panels, lamps and interior pieces actually change hands.

Community strength is good for a car this overlooked. Celica Hobby runs a third-generation board, toyotacelicas.com has its own third-generation section, Celica-Club UK covers the model in Europe, and Celica-GTS.com has been going for over twenty years.
