Audi Quattro

Overview

Audi built the quattro to prove a point, and the point reshaped motorsport. Four-wheel drive had been the preserve of tractors and military vehicles, dismissed as too heavy and too complicated for a fast road car. Audi chassis engineer Jorg Bensinger had driven the Volkswagen Iltis military vehicle through Scandinavian winters and noticed it outran far more powerful cars on snow. He proposed the same idea under a coupe body. The board approved the project in September 1977, and the quattro appeared at the Geneva show in March 1980. It paired permanent four-wheel drive with a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, a combination nobody else was selling. The rally results arrived almost immediately and the road car stayed in production for eleven years, evolving from 2144cc and 200 PS to a 20-valve 2226cc unit making 220 PS. Only 11,452 were built across the whole run, a small number for a car this famous. Every four-wheel-drive performance car since owes it something, which is why enthusiasts call it the Ur-quattro, the original one.

Mechanical at heart. Fuel injection is Bosch K-Jetronic on the earliest cars and later KE-Jetronic, both mechanical systems that can be diagnosed with gauges rather than a laptop. The engine management on the 20-valve cars is more involved but still simple by modern standards. The electronic content that does cause trouble is peripheral: the digital instrument cluster, the climate control head and the various relays. None of it prevents the car being run and repaired by an owner with normal tools.

Recent 2026 results range from 9,488 pounds for a tired 10-valve to 70,500 pounds for an exceptional 1985 right-hand-drive car, with typical good examples landing between 29,900 and 42,265 pounds. It deliberately excludes two outliers in the data: a 1,587 pound project and a 752,962 pound works rally car, neither of which reflects what a road car trades for. What to watch for
Buy the history file before the car. Galvanised bodies mean the shells survive better than most eighties cars, but neglected examples still rot in the sills, the rear arches, the front wings behind the trim and the boot floor. Lift the carpets. The five-cylinder engine is durable if serviced, though head gasket failure and turbo wear both cost real money, and a rebuilt head on a 20-valve is not a small bill. Check the four-wheel-drive system works as intended: the centre and rear differential locks should engage cleanly, and a car that fights you in tight turns with locks engaged has a problem. Electrics are the usual eighties Audi weakness, particularly the instrument cluster and the climate control. Parts supply is better than the production numbers suggest because much of the running gear is shared with other Audi models of the period, but body panels and interior trim are genuinely scarce. A well sorted, documented car at a strong price is a better purchase than a cheap one needing paint.

The Story

Driving character

It feels like a fast eighties saloon until the road turns bad, and then it feels like nothing else of its era. The five-cylinder engine is the character: an offbeat warble at idle, a long lazy pause while the turbocharger gathers itself, then a hard shove from around 3,000 rpm. Modern turbocharged cars have trained everyone to expect instant response, and this is not that. You learn to keep it on boost. The steering is heavy at parking speeds and full of information once moving. Grip is the party trick. On a wet or loose surface the quattro simply goes where it is pointed while contemporaries are scrabbling, and the confidence that gives is the entire reason the car exists. It understeers if you are clumsy with it, being nose heavy with the engine ahead of the front axle, and the way through that is patience on the way in and throttle on the way out. Slow in, fast out, exactly as the rally drivers did it.

Design

Restraint is the point. The quattro is a two-door coupe with flared arches and very little else, and the flares were a functional consequence of wider tracks rather than a styling flourish. Martin Smith handled the exterior, working from the existing Audi Coupe shape, and the result is a car that looks purposeful without shouting. The blistered arches, the deep front spoiler and the modest rear wing on later cars are the only concessions to drama. Inside, the layout is plain and clear, with the differential lock controls placed where the driver can find them without looking. The digital instrument cluster fitted to many cars is the one flourish that has dated, and it divides owners. What has aged well is the proportion: a short overhang, an upright glasshouse and a stance that sits square on the road. Park it beside its contemporaries and it looks less styled and more engineered, which is precisely the impression Audi wanted to leave.

Motorsport pedigree

This is the car's strongest suit. Audi entered the World Rally Championship in 1981, the first year four-wheel drive was permitted, and the quattro won on its competitive debut in the hands of Hannu Mikkola. Audi took the manufacturers title in 1982 and again in 1984, finishing runner-up in 1983, and the cars recorded 23 WRC victories between 1981 and 1985. Michele Mouton became the first woman to win a world championship rally driving one, and came close to the drivers title in 1982. Stig Blomqvist and Walter Rohrl also drove them. The Sport Quattro and the later S1 evolution took the idea to its extreme before Group B was banned at the end of 1986. The competition programme was not a marketing exercise bolted onto a road car; the road car existed to make the rally car legal, and the results changed the sport permanently. Within a few seasons every serious rally entry was four-wheel drive.

In culture

For a car with modest sales, the quattro has an outsized presence. The rally footage did most of it: a five-cylinder howling between Scandinavian snowbanks with all four wheels driving is one of the defining images of eighties motorsport, and the flames from the exhaust on the Group B cars did the rest. In Britain it found a second life through the television series Ashes to Ashes, where a red quattro became shorthand for eighties swagger and lifted the car into general recognition well beyond enthusiast circles. Audi has leaned on it ever since, and the word quattro is now a brand of its own applied across the range, which is a curious fate for a model name. Among enthusiasts the tone is more respectful than nostalgic. The quattro is remembered less as a period curiosity than as the moment a good idea was proven in public, repeatedly, against people who said it would not work.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

Significance is the whole case here. The quattro is one of a handful of cars that changed what everyone else built, and unlike most of them it is still attainable. Rarity helps: 11,452 cars over eleven years is fewer than many single model years of its contemporaries, and the UK took only 2,709 of them. Values have moved steadily rather than spiking, which tends to mean the buyers are enthusiasts rather than speculators. The 20-valve cars from 1989 to 1991 are the ones the market rewards most, being the fastest, the best built and the rarest of the three engine phases. Early 10-valve cars are cheaper and, to some tastes, more characterful, with heavier steering and a rawer turbocharger. What makes it hold interest is that it is genuinely usable. This is not a car that has to be trailered to shows. It has four seats, a boot, heating that works and the traction to be driven through a winter, which is exactly what it was built to demonstrate.

Which one to look for

Three engine phases matter more than trim names. From 1980 to 1987 the car used a 2144cc 10-valve five making 200 PS, the version that did the rallying and the one most people picture. From 1987 to 1989 it grew to 2226cc, still 10 valves and still 200 PS, with a torquier delivery. From 1989 to 1991 came the 20-valve 2226cc unit at 220 PS, along with a Torsen centre differential in place of the manually locked item. That last car is the one to have if you want to drive it hard. North American cars, sold from 1983 to 1986 with the WX engine, were choked by emissions equipment to around 160 hp and are worth noting if you are shopping in the United States. Separately, do not confuse the Quattro with the Sport Quattro, a short wheelbase homologation special of which only 224 were built. It shares the name and the idea, but it is a different and far more expensive car.

Quattro (North America, WX) · 1983-1986

The US-market car, choked by emissions equipment to around 160 hp against the European 200 PS. Mechanically the same otherwise. Worth knowing if you are shopping in the United States, where these are the cars most commonly offered.

Quattro 2.1 10V · 1980-1987

The original, and the one the rally cars were homologated from. A 2144cc 10-valve turbocharged five making 200 PS, with manually locked centre and rear differentials operated by a pull knob between the seats. Heavier steering and a longer turbo pause than the later cars, which is exactly why some owners prefer it.

Quattro 2.2 10V · 1987-1989

Same 200 PS, but from 2226cc rather than 2144cc, giving noticeably more mid-range and a more relaxed car to drive on the road. Visually near identical to the earlier cars, so check the engine number rather than the badge.

Quattro 20V · 1989-1991

The one to have if you intend to drive it hard. A 20-valve 2226cc five at 220 PS, and a Torsen centre differential replacing the manual lock, which makes the car far more natural to place on a wet road. The last and best-built version.

What owning one is like

Corrosion is the first thing to check despite the galvanised shell. Sills, rear arches, the area behind the front wing trim and the boot floor all rot on neglected cars, and repairs are complicated by panel scarcity. Head gasket failure is the well known engine fault, often signalled by pressurised coolant or oil contamination, and on 20-valve cars the repair is expensive. Turbochargers wear and are a consumable rather than a fault. The manual differential locks on pre-1989 cars seize if never used, and the vacuum actuators that operate them perish. Digital instrument clusters fail, usually in the display rather than the sensors, and good replacements are hard to find. Climate control units are a common weak point. Wheel bearings, driveshaft joints and suspension bushes all wear faster than on a two-wheel-drive car of similar age because everything is driving as well as steering. None of it is unusual for the era, but the four-wheel-drive hardware doubles some of the running gear you have to inspect.

Upkeep & parts

Running costs are reasonable for a car of this stature, which is a large part of its appeal. Mechanical parts are widely available because the engine and much of the running gear were shared across the Audi range of the period, so service items, brakes and suspension components are neither scarce nor expensive. Specialist support is genuinely good in the UK and Germany, where the cars have been looked after continuously since new. The costs that bite are body panels, interior trim and the four-wheel-drive specific hardware, all of which are scarce and rising. Budget properly for a head gasket at some point and treat a turbocharger as a wear item. Use the differential locks occasionally, even if only in a car park, because the ones that seize are the ones that never move. The cambelt interval matters and the consequences of ignoring it are severe on an interference engine. A car with continuous history and a specialist relationship already established is worth paying for.
