Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder

Overview

The California Spyder was not Maranello's idea. It came from the two men who sold Ferraris in America, Luigi Chinetti in New York and John von Neumann on the West Coast, who told Enzo Ferrari at the end of 1957 that their customers wanted an open 250 that could be driven to a race meeting, entered, and driven home afterwards. Ferrari already sold a convertible, the 250 GT Cabriolet bodied by Pinin Farina, but that car had drifted toward comfort. What Chinetti and von Neumann asked for was the competition Berlinetta with the roof cut off, and that is essentially what arrived. Chinetti supplied the name. The prototype was finished in 1957, series production ran from 1958, and in 1960 the body moved onto the short 2,400mm chassis after three years on the 2,600mm car. When the last one left Modena in 1963, roughly 106 had been built across both wheelbases, and fewer than a dozen of those were the aluminium competition cars. Every single one was formed by hand at Carrozzeria Scaglietti, a few hundred metres from the factory gates. Sixty years later it is one of the two or three most valuable road cars Ferrari has ever built.

There is no electronic system on this car in any modern sense of the word. Fuel arrives through three Weber twin-choke carburettors, ignition is a coil-and-distributor arrangement with mechanical advance (early cars single, later cars twin), and the fuel pump is mechanical. Throttle, clutch, gearbox, steering and brakes are direct rods, cables and hydraulics with nothing interpreting them. The only electrical circuits on the car are lighting, wipers, starter, horn and instruments.

The California Spyder is really two markets sharing one name. Short-wheelbase road cars set public records repeatedly across 2025 and 2026: $16,505,000 at Gooding Christie's Amelia Island, $16,727,110 at Retromobile Paris, and 16,655,000 euros (about $19.5m) at RM Sotheby's Monaco, which reset the road-specification record. The alloy competition car that made $25,305,000 at Gooding Christie's Pebble Beach in August 2025 sits above all of it and is the model's outright record. Long-wheelbase cars have not moved the same way. Recent LWB results cluster around a third to a half of SWB money, and the market has been broadly flat there for a decade, while one LWB Competizione (chassis 1451 GT, the Le Mans car) took $9,465,000 at Broad Arrow's Amelia Island sale. The band below deliberately spans both wheelbases in road-specification steel-bodied form, which is why it is unusually wide: the low figure is an honest driver-grade LWB, the high figure a concours SWB. Competition and alloy cars are excluded from it.

What to watch for
Nothing about buying one of these turns on condition. It turns on identity. There are more cars wearing California Spyder bodywork than Ferrari ever built, and the awkward ones are not the fibreglass kit cars, which anybody can spot, but the real Ferraris that were rebodied later. A genuine 250 GT Coupe or Cabriolet chassis, hand-clothed in aluminium to California shape, carries the right wheelbase, the right Colombo V12 and the right suspension, and it is entirely capable of fooling someone who is looking at the car rather than at the paperwork. So look at the paperwork first. Chassis and engine number stampings, the body number tag, factory build records, and a chassis-by-chassis history from a recognised Ferrari historian all come before anything else. Ferrari Classiche certification is not a formality at this level, and its absence needs an explanation you find satisfying. After that, the ordinary checks apply: the tubular frame and the steel panels rot where any Italian car of the period rots, and a car restored in the 1980s may have had its originality quietly optimised away. Alloy bodywork is separately documented and commands its own money, so treat a claim of an alloy body as a claim to verify, never as a listed feature.

The Story

Driving character

The Colombo V12 is the whole event. Three litres, a single overhead camshaft per bank, three twin-choke Webers on top, 240hp at 7,000rpm in the long-wheelbase cars and roughly 280hp once the short-wheelbase engines arrived with better breathing. Ferrari's own figure for the model is 252km/h. What the numbers do not tell you is the delivery: very little below 3,000rpm that feels like a Ferrari, and then a hard, metallic, layered noise that arrives all at once and keeps climbing toward an indicated seven. It is a small engine doing something no small engine should, and with the roof down there is no bodywork between you and it. The chassis underneath is of its time. Wishbones and coil springs at the front, a live rear axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs and radius arms behind, worm-and-sector steering that is heavy at walking pace and lovely once the car is moving. The early drum-braked cars ask you to plan ahead; the Dunlop disc cars from late 1959 do not. Short-wheelbase cars turn in noticeably harder and feel like the racing Berlinetta they share a chassis with. The long-wheelbase car rides better and is the one you would take across a country.

Design

Credit here is genuinely shared, and sources still argue about the proportions of it. The design came from Pinin Farina, working from the 250 GT Cabriolet it had already drawn, and the execution came from Sergio Scaglietti's shop in Modena, where panels were beaten over wooden bucks by hand. What Scaglietti's people did with a Pinin Farina drawing is why no two cars are quite identical, and why this one reads as sculpture rather than product. The signatures are the long low nose with the egg-crate grille set into it, the functional bonnet scoop, the shallow cut-down doors, and the way the rear haunch rises and then falls away to a tail with almost no overhang. Headlights came either covered in faired plexiglass or open in chrome rims, at the customer's choice, except on cars sold new in Italy in 1959, where regulations forced them open. Both look right for different reasons, which is why that argument never ends either. The short-wheelbase car lost 200mm from between the axles and gained a squarer, more purposeful stance for it. A removable hardtop was offered, and the cars wearing one look like a different and slightly less interesting machine.

Motorsport pedigree

For a car sold as a boulevard Ferrari, the competition record is real. At the 1959 Sebring 12 Hours, Richie Ginther and Howard Hively won the GT class in a California Spyder. Three months later at Le Mans, Bob Grossman and Fernand Tavano took chassis 1451 GT, a factory-built alloy Competizione with an outside-plug Tipo 128F engine, Testa Rossa camshafts, 40mm Webers, an oil cooler and an oversized tank fitted specially for the race, to fifth overall and third in the three-litre GT class after 294 laps. The car had been finished days beforehand. At Sebring in 1960, Carlo Abate, Giorgio Scarlatti and Fabrizio Serena took another GT class win. That is the shape of the car's racing life: privateers, most of them running under Chinetti's North American Racing Team banner, campaigning an open car against closed Berlinettas built for the job and finishing respectably anyway. Ferrari never treated it as a works racer, and the short-wheelbase cars, faster and better braked, actually raced less than the long-wheelbase ones did. The competition cars are worth what they are worth partly because so few were ever asked to do this at all.

In culture

The strange thing about the California Spyder's fame is that the car most people picture was never a Ferrari at all. Ferris Bueller's Day Off used three replicas built by Modena Design and Development: fibreglass bodies on tubular steel frames with Ford V8s underneath, Mustang suspension, a Fiat windscreen and Volkswagen tail lights. The one that goes backwards through the glass wall at the end was an empty shell with no engine in it. Modena badged the cars as Ferraris without asking, and the lawsuit that followed put the company out of business. None of that stopped the film from turning a 106-car Ferrari into something a generation of American teenagers could name on sight. The real cars had their own celebrity first. James Coburn owned a black covered-headlight SWB for 25 years; in 2008 it sold at RM's Maranello auction for 7,040,000 euros, about $10.9m, to Chris Evans, becoming the first car ever to pass eight figures at auction. Gerard Blain's car passed to Alain Delon in 1963, was photographed constantly, then vanished into a French barn for decades before Artcurial sold it out of the Baillon collection in 2015 for 16,288,000 euros.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

Rarity alone does not explain the money, because Ferrari built plenty of cars in double figures. What the California Spyder has is the combination of a genuine competition chassis, an open body most people consider the prettiest thing Scaglietti ever made, and a dual-purpose brief that means the car is welcome on the Pebble Beach lawn on Sunday and on the Tour Auto the following spring. The hierarchy inside the generation is steep and well understood. At the top sit the aluminium competition cars, one of which took $25,305,000 at Gooding Christie's Pebble Beach sale in August 2025, a record for the model. Below them the short-wheelbase road cars, where a covered-headlight example made 16,655,000 euros at RM Sotheby's Monaco in 2026, the public record for a road-specification SWB. The long-wheelbase cars sit at roughly a third of that, and this is the genuinely interesting part of the market: same engine, same coachbuilder, the same shape stretched over 200 extra millimetres, for money that has stayed comparatively flat while the SWB pulled away. Whether that gap is a mispricing or a settled judgment is the live argument in this corner of the market.

Which one to look for

Start with the split that governs everything: 2,600mm long-wheelbase cars built from 1958 to 1960, and 2,400mm short-wheelbase cars from 1960 to 1963, roughly 50 and 56 respectively, though the exact division is still argued. The grail is the alloy competition car. Nine long-wheelbase cars were bodied in aluminium and eight of those were built to Competizione specification, with outside-plug engines, oil coolers, larger Weber carburettors and long-distance fuel tanks. A further pair of short-wheelbase cars were built to compete. Chassis 1451 GT, the Le Mans car, is the best known of them. Below those, the short-wheelbase road cars are what the market wants, and inside that group covered headlights are the collector preference even though the open-headlight cars carry the more competition-flavoured specification. Long-wheelbase cars divide by brakes: drums until late 1959, Dunlop discs afterwards, and the disc cars are more usable in every way that matters. The prototype, chassis 0769 GT, is a car apart, built on Tour de France mechanicals and sent to Chinetti for sale in America in January 1958. Steel-bodied road cars with honest histories are the volume car here, and there is nothing second rate about them.

LWB · 1958–1960

The original car, on the 2,600mm long-wheelbase 250 GT chassis with the Tipo 128 Colombo V12 rated at 240hp at 7,000rpm. LWB Competizione · 1959–1960

The factory competition version of the long-wheelbase car, bodied in aluminium and specified for racing rather than boulevards: outside-plug Tipo 128F engines with Testa Rossa camshafts, 40mm Weber carburettors, engine oil coolers, uprated suspension and long-distance fuel tanks. These are the cars that gave the model its competition record, and they sit at the top of the generation's value hierarchy.

SWB · 1960–1963

The second series, on the 2,400mm short-wheelbase 250 GT chassis, with the Tipo 168 Colombo V12 producing roughly 280hp thanks to larger valves and improved breathing, and four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes as standard. Squarer and more purposeful in stance, sharper on turn-in, and mechanically the same car underneath as the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta. This is the version the market chases hardest, with covered-headlight examples the collector preference.

SWB Competizione

The short-wheelbase equivalent of the alloy competition cars, built in aluminium to race specification. Very few were made, and they raced far less than the long-wheelbase Competiziones did, which is part of why they command what they do. Chassis 2383 GT is the reference example and the most valuable California Spyder ever sold at public auction.

What owning one is like

Nobody buys one of these expecting an easy life, and the good news is that the difficulty is mostly logistical rather than mechanical. The Colombo V12 is a robust, conservatively stressed engine that runs a very long time if the oil is changed and the car is warmed properly before it is used. The failure modes are the ordinary ones for a wet-sump 1950s engine: valve guides, tired timing chains, worn synchros in the four-speed box, and carburettor balance that drifts and wants a specialist rather than a screwdriver and optimism. Three Webers on a V12 means twelve throats that all have to agree with each other. The bodies are hand-made steel over a tubular frame, so rust arrives in the sills, floors, boot floor and lower rear wings, and because every panel is unique to its own car, a repair is fabrication rather than a part number. The electrics are period Italian and the cooling system needs to be right before you sit in traffic with it. What owners consistently report is that a properly sorted car is tractable, will idle in town, pulls cleanly from low revs, and is far less temperamental than its value leads people to assume.

Upkeep & parts

Everything for this car is available and none of it is cheap. The specialist network is deep and long established, with GTO Engineering, DK Engineering, Ferrari Classiche in Maranello and a handful of American shops able to handle anything from a service to a bare-chassis rebuild, and reproduction parts for the 250 range are made to a genuinely high standard because the market supports it. Budget in the right order of magnitude. A full Colombo V12 rebuild is commonly quoted at around 120,000 pounds, and a comprehensive restoration of a short-wheelbase car at 400,000 to 550,000 pounds before bodywork, with Scaglietti panel work adding six figures again. Ferrari Classiche certification is the other line item worth planning for, because at this level it affects what the car is worth as much as what it is. On documentation you are better served than by almost any marque: barchetta.cc keeps chassis-by-chassis records for the entire early Ferrari output, the Ferrari Club of America and the Ferrari Owners' Club GB both hold real archives, and independent Ferrari historians will assemble a full history file for a given chassis. Use all of it before you spend, not afterwards.
