Ferrari 250 GT SWB

Overview

Ferrari had a winning car in 1959 and replaced it anyway. The 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France had taken the event that gave it its name four years running, but the opposition was closing, so Maranello cut 200mm out of the wheelbase, put a new Pinin Farina shape over the 2,400mm chassis, gave the Colombo V12 better breathing and fitted Dunlop discs at all four corners. It appeared at the Paris Salon in October 1959 as the 250 GT Berlinetta passo corto, and it was the first Ferrari GT sold with disc brakes as standard equipment. What made it unusual was not the specification but the way it was offered. The same car left Modena either as a steel-bodied lusso trimmed for the road or as an aluminium Competizione built to be raced, and a customer could mix the two more or less at will. Around 165 were built in three seasons. They won the Tour de France Automobile outright in 1960, 1961 and 1962, filled fourth through seventh place at Le Mans in 1960, and took Stirling Moss to the last two Tourist Trophy wins of his career. Then Ferrari used the model's homologation to legalise the 250 GTO.

Nothing on this car interprets anything. Fuelling is three Weber twin-choke carburettors on the road engines and six 46 DCF/3 units on the 1961 lightweights, ignition is coil and distributor with mechanical advance, and the fuel pump is mechanical. Throttle, clutch, the four-speed gearbox, the unassisted steering box and the Dunlop discs are all direct rods, cables and hydraulic lines. The only electrical circuits on the car are ignition, starter, lights, wipers, horn and instruments. The discs were the one genuinely new technology on it in 1959, and they are purely hydraulic.

The SWB sits in the tier just below the 250 GTO and the California Spyder, and its market is unusually two-tracked. Alloy Competizione cars with race history set the numbers: chassis 1773 GT, a 1960 Competizione with more than 20 period races behind it, took 10,158,125 euros at RM Sotheby's Paris sale in January 2024, and another Competizione made 7,762,500 pounds at Gooding's Hampton Court sale in September 2022. Steel lusso road cars sit lower and have been softer. A Classiche-certified steel car made about $7.1 million at RM Sotheby's in May 2023, a result Sports Car Market read as mild for the quality of the car. The recent direction is flat rather than upward. In January 2026 Gooding Christie's took an early matching-numbers car, chassis 2177 GT, to Retromobile Paris with an 8 to 9 million euro estimate, while a 1960 car at RM's Cliveden House sale the same day failed to sell against a 5 to 6 million pound estimate. What to watch for
Start with identity, because at this money it is the whole transaction. There are more cars wearing SWB bodywork than Ferrari ever built. Some are honest recreations, and there is a real industry making them: GTO Engineering will build a new one on a tired 330 or 365 donor for something around 850,000 pounds, and says so openly. The difficult cars are the ones that do not say so. Chassis and engine stampings, the body number tag, the factory build sheets and an independent chassis history all come before you look at the paint, and Ferrari Classiche certification is not a formality here. Next, decide which car you are buying. Alloy Competizione bodywork is separately documented and carries its own money, so treat a claim of an alloy body as something to verify rather than a listed feature. Matching numbers count for more on a SWB than on almost anything else, because so few still have them: the Paris car that made ten million euros had chassis, engine and rear axle all agreeing with the build sheets. Then the ordinary checks. The tube frame and steel panels rot in the sills, floors, boot floor and lower rear wings, and a 1980s restoration may have quietly optimised the car's originality away.

The Story

Driving character

The engine is the reason and it does not hide. Three litres, twelve cylinders, a single overhead camshaft per bank, Webers on top, and depending on specification and on which source you believe, somewhere between 220 and 280hp arriving at 7,000rpm. Below three thousand it is tractable and will pull cleanly in third from a crawl. Above that it hardens into the layered metallic noise that is the whole point of a Colombo, and it keeps climbing while your sense of how fast you are actually travelling gets steadily worse. The chassis underneath is a period design done properly rather than a clever one: wishbones and coil springs at the front, a live axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs behind, and a wheelbase 200mm shorter than the car it replaced, which is what turned a fast Ferrari into an agile one. The four-speed box is all-synchromesh, which was not a given in 1959 and makes the car far easier to drive quickly than most of its contemporaries. The Dunlop discs are the quiet revolution, because for the first time a fast Ferrari would still stop at the end of a long race. Moss rated it the best GT car in the world, and he had driven the alternatives for a living.

Design

Pinin Farina drew it and Scaglietti built it, which is the standard division of labour on a competition 250 and still the source of arguments about who deserves the credit. The shape is short and every line acknowledges it. A long low nose with the egg-crate grille set into a small mouth, a tall glasshouse pulled well back, a roofline that drops into a stubby cut-off tail, and no ornament anywhere that is not doing a job. The body was revised for 1961, and specialists distinguish the 1960 and 1961 cars at a glance by details most owners never notice. Panels were beaten by hand over wooden bucks in Modena, so no two are identical and a repair is fabrication rather than a part number. Two cars took the shape somewhere else entirely. Bertone bodied one SWB as a one-off Berlinetta Speciale, a Giugiaro-era exercise that looks nothing like the rest. And in 1962 Giotto Bizzarrini, working for Count Giovanni Volpi after Enzo Ferrari refused to sell him a GTO, moved the engine back and down in chassis 2819 GT and had Piero Drogo cut the tail off flat behind a Kamm profile. Fourteen days later the Breadvan existed.

Motorsport pedigree

The SWB's competition record is unusually dense for a car you could also order trimmed in leather. At Le Mans in 1960 the model took fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh overall, with Fernand Tavano and Pierre Dumay, racing as Loustel, winning the three-litre GT class in the highest-placed of them. In 1961 Pierre Noblet and Jean Guichet went two places better: third overall and another GT class win, beaten only by the two works Testa Rossas. On the Tour de France Automobile the model won outright three years running. Willy Mairesse and Georges Berger took it in 1960 and again in 1961, then Andre Simon and Maurice Dupeyron in 1962, a year in which the brand new 250 GTOs finished second and third behind a car they had been built to replace. Ferrari won the 1961 constructors' championship in the GT class with it. And at Goodwood, Stirling Moss won the Tourist Trophy twice in Rob Walker's dark blue car, in 1960 at an average of 85mph over three hours, and again in 1961 in chassis 2735 GT, ahead of Mike Parkes in another SWB and the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagatos of Jim Clark and Roy Salvadori. It was the seventh and last TT win of his career.

In culture

The SWB's fame is a connoisseur's fame rather than a poster's, and it has proved unusually durable for that. Moss's verdict that it was the best GT car in the world has been quoted at the model for sixty years, and it carries weight because he raced the alternatives for a living. The clearest evidence of the shape's hold is how many people have tried to build it again. GTO Engineering in Berkshire, named after the car this one became, sells a 250 SWB Revival: a new car hand-formed in aluminium on a stripped 330 or 365 donor, at something around 850,000 pounds. RML in Wellingborough went sideways instead with the Short Wheelbase of 2022, a carbon-bodied homage wrapped around a Ferrari 550 Maranello's V12, chassis and six-speed gate, limited to 30 cars. Neither is a replica in the ordinary sense and neither pretends to be original, which is itself a comment on how the shape is regarded. The Breadvan has its own following, a car made deliberately ugly that ended up beautiful, and it is still the most famous thing anyone ever did to a SWB. What the model never got is a film role, and it has not needed one.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The argument for the SWB is that it is the last point at which Ferrari's fastest GT racer and its nicest road car were the same object. A year later the GTO arrived with no speedometer and no carpet, and the two jobs never shared a body again. That dual purpose is why a SWB is welcome on the Pebble Beach lawn and on the Tour Auto in the same season, and why it sits in the small group of Ferraris the market treats as permanent. The hierarchy inside roughly 165 cars is steep and legible. At the top are the 1961 lightweight competition cars the trade calls SEFAC Hot Rods, and above even those, any chassis carrying a Le Mans, Tour de France or Tourist Trophy result. Below them sit the ordinary alloy Competizione cars, then the steel lusso road cars, which is where most buyers actually shop. That gap is the interesting part. A well documented, Classiche-certified steel car made about $7.1 million at RM Sotheby's in May 2023, while an alloy Competizione with a real race record took 10,158,125 euros at RM's Paris sale in January 2024. Same engine, same coachbuilder, different metal and a very different life.

Which one to look for

The first split is metal. Roughly 90 cars were bodied in steel as lusso road cars and roughly 75 in aluminium as Competizione, out of about 165 built, though the exact division moves depending on which source is counting. Steel cars carry more trim and more sound deadening; alloy cars are lighter, louder and were sold expecting to be raced. Inside the alloy group sits the grail. In 1961 Ferrari built a small run of lightweights the trade calls SEFAC Hot Rods, generally reckoned at about 20 cars: the lighter Tipo 539/61 chassis with revised rear suspension pickups and thinner tubing, a body skinned in 1.1mm aluminium, and the Tipo 168B/61 engine with Testa Rossa cylinder heads, high-lift camshafts and six Weber 46 DCF/3 carburettors, good for close to 300hp. Above all of that, the market ranks by history rather than specification. A chassis with a Le Mans class win, a Tour de France result or a Moss drive attached to it is a different asset from an identical car without one. And one car sits outside the ranking entirely: chassis 2819 GT, rebodied in 1962 as the Breadvan, is a SWB that stopped being a SWB.

Berlinetta Competizione · 1959–1962

The aluminium-bodied racing version, sold to customers who intended to enter it. Lighter body, higher-output engine, larger fuel tank and sparse interior trim. This is the specification that won the GT class at Le Mans in 1960 and 1961 and took the Tour de France Automobile outright three years running.

Berlinetta Lusso · 1959–1962

The steel-bodied road car, and the volume seller. Same 2,400mm chassis, same Colombo V12 and same Dunlop discs as the racing cars, with more trim, more sound deadening and a milder state of tune. Ferrari never treated it as the lesser version, and buyers could specify competition parts on a lusso if they wanted them.

The factory lightweights, and the grail of the model. The Tipo 539/61 chassis with revised rear suspension pickups, smaller-diameter tubing and extra bracing, skinned in 1.1mm aluminium, with the Tipo 168B/61 engine: Testa Rossa cylinder heads, high-lift camshafts, enlarged intake tracts and six Weber 46 DCF/3 carburettors for close to 300hp.

What owning one is like

The mechanical side is more forgiving than the price suggests. The Colombo V12 is conservatively stressed in road tune and lasts a long time if it is warmed properly and the oil is changed, and the failure modes are the ordinary ones for a wet-sump engine of the period: valve guides, tired timing chains, worn synchros and carburettor balance that drifts. Three Webers on a V12 is twelve throats that all have to agree with each other, and getting them to agree is specialist work rather than a Sunday job. The bodies are the harder problem. Hand-formed panels over a tubular frame rust in the sills, floors, boot floor and lower rear wings, and because every car's panels are unique to it, each repair is fabrication. On alloy cars the corrosion is electrolytic, at the joints where the aluminium skin meets the steel structure, which is exactly where nobody can see it. The other reality is that the car is now worth more than most houses, and that changes how it gets used. Owners who do use them all report the same thing: a sorted SWB idles in traffic, pulls from low revs, has proper brakes, and is easier to live with than almost anything else in its price bracket.

Upkeep & parts

Everything is available and nothing is cheap, which is the standing condition of early Ferrari ownership. The specialist network is deep. GTO Engineering, DK Engineering and Ferrari Classiche in Maranello will all take on anything from a service to a bare-chassis rebuild, and the reproduction parts trade for the 250 range is genuinely good because the market pays for it. Budget in the right order of magnitude rather than in line items. A full Colombo V12 rebuild is commonly quoted at around 120,000 pounds, and a comprehensive restoration of a SWB-class car at 400,000 to 550,000 pounds before bodywork, with Scaglietti-standard panel work adding roughly 100,000 to 200,000 pounds again. Classiche certification is the other planned expense, because at this level it affects what the car is worth as much as what it is. Documentation is where you are unusually well served. barchetta.cc keeps chassis-by-chassis records for the whole early Ferrari output, the Ferrari Club of America and the Ferrari Owners' Club GB both hold real archives, and independent Ferrari historians will assemble a full history file for a given chassis.
