Nissan Skyline GT-R R32

Overview

Nissan spent sixteen years without a GT-R and then built one aimed at a specific championship. The R32 arrived in August 1989 with a 2,568cc twin-turbocharged straight six, all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, and almost every headline number on it is a Group A regulation in disguise. Group A multiplied a turbocharged engine's capacity by 1.7 to place it in a class. A 2.4 would have landed in the four-litre bracket, where wheels were capped at ten inches. Nissan chose 2.6, which multiplied out to 4.4 and put the car in the top 4.5-litre class where eleven-inch wheels were legal, and swallowed the higher minimum weight that came with it. The RB26DETT that resulted, six individual throttle bodies and twin ceramic-wheeled turbochargers, published 280 PS because Japan's manufacturers had agreed among themselves not to advertise more than that. The car then won 29 Group A races from 29 starts in Japan, two Australian championships and two Bathurst 1000s, and got Group A abolished in Australia. Australian journalists had named it Godzilla before it turned a wheel.

For 1989 this is a heavily computerised car, and the computers are the point rather than a convenience. Engine management is a Nissan ECU running sequential injection across six individual throttle bodies. ATTESA E-TS is electronically controlled all-wheel drive: a hydraulic clutch pack fed by wheel-speed and lateral-g sensors decides continuously how much torque leaves the rear axle for the front, and it can send none at all. Super HICAS steers the rear wheels under computer control. Anti-lock braking was fitted, and deleted on the Nismo cars because Group A did not permit it. What keeps the car off the top of the scale is that the driver's own controls stayed mechanical: cable throttle, hydraulically assisted steering, unassisted clutch, conventional manual gearbox, and nothing at all between your right foot and the engine.

High rather than blue-chip, because 43,937 cars is a lot and the base car is still genuinely attainable, but the direction has been firmly upward since US import eligibility opened in 2014. Clean documented examples traded at roughly $50,000 to $90,000 through 2026, with V-spec and V-spec II above that and the 560 Nismo homologation cars in a market of their own. The band below describes an honest driver through to a properly sorted, unmolested later car; concours low-mileage examples and the limited variants sit above it. The two things that move an individual car most are documentation and how much has been done to the engine, because a very large proportion have been modified and a standard, unopened example now carries a premium it simply did not carry ten years ago.

What to watch for
Two things decide whether an R32 is a good buy, and neither of them is the paint. The first is the oil pump drive collar. The standard collar cracks at the gear interface under sustained high rpm and it is the best-known failure point of the RB26; the N1 or aftermarket replacement is a few hundred dollars as a part and considerably more if it turns up mid-rebuild. Ask for evidence it has been changed. The second is the turbochargers, which left the factory with ceramic turbine wheels that shatter if boost has been raised or if anything has passed through the compressor. Steel-wheel replacements are the known fix and most enthusiast-owned cars have had them. Beyond the engine: check the ATTESA hydraulic pump for leaks, drive the car and feel whether the front axle actually engages, and treat Super HICAS as a maintenance item that plenty of owners simply delete. Second and third gear synchros wear. Rust lives in the rear arches, the boot floor and the sills. Assume the car has been modified, because nearly all of them have, and buy documentation ahead of originality claims.

The Story

Driving character

The RB26 does not feel like 280 PS and it was never meant to. It is soft and unremarkable to about 3,500 rpm, then both turbochargers arrive together and the car changes character completely, pulling with a hard even shove to the limiter over turbo whistle, wastegate chatter and the induction hiss of six individual throttle bodies. What separates it from every other fast Japanese car of the period is what happens next. ATTESA E-TS leaves the car rear-driven until the sensors decide otherwise, so it turns in like a rear-drive coupe and then, if you have asked for more than the rear tyres will give, quietly sends drive forward and hauls you out. It flatters an average driver enormously and rewards a good one, which is exactly why the R32 became the yardstick. Super HICAS steers the rear wheels a degree or two and produces a slightly synthetic sense of rotation that some owners love and many delete. The steering is quick, the gearchange is notchy and mechanical, and the whole car feels smaller and more alert than the R33 and R34 that followed.

Design

The R32 GT-R is a plain shape wearing exactly the additions Group A demanded, which is why it has aged as well as it has. It starts as an ordinary Skyline coupe, then gains blistered front and rear arches to cover the eleven-inch wheels the 4.5-litre class allowed, a bonnet vent, a deep front bumper with a chin splitter, and a boot spoiler with an adjustable blade. There is no ornament anywhere. The four round tail lamps carry over from the Hakosuka and every Skyline in between, and the wheels are simple five-spokes. Inside is austere in the way Japanese performance cars of the period were: cloth seats, a plain dash, boost and oil temperature gauges in a small binnacle by the centre vents, and very little else. Colour matters to the market, Gun Grey Metallic above all, which was the launch colour and the one the car is photographed in most often. Nothing about the design is trying to look expensive, and that restraint is now a large part of the appeal.

Motorsport pedigree

The R32 was engineered for Group A and did what it was engineered to do more completely than almost anything in the category's history. In Japan it won 29 races from 29 starts in the Japanese Touring Car Championship between 1990 and 1993, every event it entered. In Australia, Gibson Motorsport's cars took the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1991 with Jim Richards and in 1992 with Mark Skaife; the 1991 season was seven wins from nine rounds, six of them one-two finishes, with a GT-R on the podium at every round. It won the Bathurst 1000 in 1991 and 1992 with Richards and Skaife sharing, the 1991 win the first by a Japanese car at Mount Panorama and set in a race-record time that stood for nineteen years. The 1992 win is the flashpoint. The race was stopped early after a crash, the pair were declared winners, and the crowd booed and threw cans, drawing Richards's furious reply from the podium. Australia's governing body ended Group A after that season and moved to the domestic V8 formula that became V8 Supercars.

In culture

Godzilla is not a factory name and it did not come from Japan. Australia's Wheels magazine put the R32 on its July 1989 cover and called it Nissan's new Godzilla, before the car had raced anywhere, and the name travelled the world without the internet's help. It belongs to this car and to what came after it. It has never applied to the Hakosuka or the Kenmeri, which were fifteen and sixteen years dead when the phrase was printed, and purists still restrict it to the R32 alone. The second engine of the myth is Gran Turismo, which from 1997 put the R32 in front of millions of people in a country where it could not legally be bought. Initial D added another layer: Takeshi Nakazato, leader of the Myogi NightKids, drives a Black Pearl Metallic R32 GT-R V-spec II, the first Skyline in the series. The American obsession is downstream of prohibition. No R32 was sold new in the United States, and the first became legally importable in 2014, which is where the modern price story actually starts.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The R32 is where the modern GT-R begins and it is still the accessible one, which is a rare combination. 43,937 were built, so this is not a rarity play, it is a significance play, and the significance is unusually well documented. Every technology the badge is known for arrives here: ATTESA E-TS torque-split all-wheel drive, Super HICAS four-wheel steering, the RB26DETT. So does the racing record, and so does the name. In America it carries a further layer, because the R32 was the first Skyline GT-R to become legally importable under the 25-year rule, in 2014, which is when US demand for these cars actually began. The internal hierarchy is steep and worth learning. At the bottom, ordinary Series 1 to 3 cars, which are still real GT-Rs and still the sensible purchase. Above them the V-spec and V-spec II, 1,396 and 1,306 cars. Above those the 245 N1 cars. At the top the 560 Nismo homologation specials, built to legalise Group A parts, which the market treats as a different asset class entirely.

Which one to look for

Ordinary is the right place to start. Series 1, 2 and 3 cars account for more than 40,000 of the 43,937 built, share the same RB26DETT and ATTESA E-TS drivetrain, and are the only ones most people will ever buy; later Series 3 cars carry the accumulated running changes and are the pick. Above them sit the V-spec of February 1993 and the V-spec II of February 1994, 1,396 and 1,306 cars, adding Brembo brakes, 17-inch BBS wheels and a retuned all-wheel-drive system with an active rear limited-slip differential, the V-spec II on wider tyres. The 245 N1 cars are the stripped endurance-racing basis: air conditioning, audio and rear wiper deleted, with the tougher N1 engine and steel-wheel turbochargers. The grail is the Nismo, 560 built between December 1989 and March 1990, 500 to the public and 60 to race teams, existing purely to homologate Group A parts. It deletes ABS because the race cars could not run it, deletes the air conditioning and audio, saves around 30 kg, and carries the aero the racers would use.

GT-R (Series 1, 2 and 3) · 1989–1994

The standard car and the one almost everyone buys. RB26DETT, ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive, Super HICAS four-wheel steering, five-speed manual. Running changes across three series; later Series 3 cars carry the accumulated improvements and are the pick of the ordinary cars.

N1 · 1991–1994

The endurance-racing basis. Air conditioning, audio and rear wiper deleted, with the tougher N1 version of the RB26DETT and steel-wheel turbochargers in place of the standard ceramic ones. Built to be raced, so surviving unraced cars are extremely scarce.

Nismo · 1990

The Group A evolution homologation model and the grail R32. ABS deleted because the race cars were not allowed it, air conditioning, audio and rear wiper deleted, about 30kg lighter, with the aero package the Group A cars would use. Sold in a single colour scheme and only in Japan.

V-spec · 1993

Announced 3 February 1993. Brembo brakes with larger discs and calipers, 17-inch BBS wheels, a retuned all-wheel-drive system with an active rear limited-slip differential, and revised suspension. The first meaningful step above the standard car.

V-spec II · 1994

The final and most developed R32. As V-spec, with wider 245-section tyres on the same 17-inch BBS wheels. The last of the line before the R33 arrived in January 1995.

What owning one is like

An R32 is a tough late-eighties Nissan under the drivetrain, mostly cheap to keep, with a handful of expensive exceptions everyone should know before buying. The oil pump drive collar is the famous one and it is why engines let go: the standard collar cracks at the gear interface under sustained high rpm, and the fix is a known part rather than a mystery. The other engine item is the turbochargers, which left the factory with ceramic turbine wheels that shatter if boost was raised or debris found the compressor. Away from the engine, the ATTESA hydraulic pump ages and leaks, Super HICAS fails and is frequently deleted, and second and third gear synchros wear with hard driving. Rust shows at the rear arches, in the boot floor and along the sills, and cars that spent years in Japanese winters have it. Connectors and the climate control panel are getting old. None of it is obscure, all of it is documented by an unusually organised community, and a sorted car is genuinely usable every day of the week.

Upkeep & parts

Support for the R32 is better than for almost any other thirty-year-old Japanese car, largely because Nissan decided to help. The Nismo Heritage Parts programme has been reissuing discontinued R32 parts since 2017, from body panels and wiring harnesses to engine internals, and it is the single biggest reason values feel safe. Around it sits a mature aftermarket: the RB26 has been tuned so thoroughly for so long that pistons, rods, oil pumps, turbochargers and gaskets are commodity items, and a properly built engine is a solved problem rather than an adventure. Where costs land is the ancillary systems. An ATTESA pump rebuild, a HICAS overhaul or a gearbox refresh are each meaningful bills, and a car needing several at once adds up fast. Budget for a full fluid and timing belt service on purchase, and for tyres that suit the drivetrain. The community infrastructure is excellent: GTROC is the Nissan-recognised owners club, GTR Register has run for decades, and gtr-registry.com will confirm a car's build date, colour and options from its chassis number.
