Fiat 124 Sport Spider

Overview

Fiat put the 124 Sport Spider on its stand at the Turin show in November 1966, and what stood there was a small car carrying a large idea. Underneath were the 124 saloon's mechanicals on a wheelbase shortened by 140mm, but the engine was Aurelio Lampredi's new twin cam with an aluminium crossflow head, and it drove its camshafts through a reinforced rubber toothed belt, the first mass-produced engine anywhere to do that. Tom Tjaarda drew the body at Pininfarina, and Pininfarina built it too. That split defines the car: Fiat engineered it, the carrozzeria styled and assembled it, and the badge on the nose was the only part of the arrangement the public ever saw.

For the money it out-specified everything. Four-wheel discs, five forward gears and twin overhead camshafts, in 1966, on a car priced against British roadsters that offered none of the three.

America understood this at once. Roughly three quarters of the whole 1966 to 1985 run crossed the Atlantic, and between 1975 and 1981 the Spider was sold in North America and nowhere else, which is why so much of its later story is about federal bumpers and emissions plumbing rather than Italian roads.

For most of its life this car has nothing electronic on it at all: a single or twin-choke Weber, points and condenser, a mechanical fuel pump, cable throttle, unassisted steering, no computer of any kind. The score is a 2 rather than a 1 only because of the last two years. Bosch L-Jetronic injection with a catalytic converter arrived for the 1980 model year in California, became standard across North America for 1981, and brought electronic ignition with it. A pre-1980 carburetted car is honestly a 1; the injected Spider 2000 is a 3.

The market has split rather than risen. Chrome-bumper cars from 1966 to 1974 have pulled away and good early 1.4s reach the high twenties in sterling, while 1975 to 1982 federal cars still change hands for the price of a used hatchback. The Classic Valuer's median across 84 auction appearances is GBP 8,035 with an 81 percent sell-through, which is the honest middle of this car.

What to watch for
Buy the shell. Everything else on this car is cheap and solved, and the shell is neither. The front suspension turrets are the ones that end deals, because repairing them properly is expensive and hiding them badly is easy. Work outward from there: the bolt-on lower front crossmember, the radiator crossmember and the panel around the headlights, floorpans starting on the driver's side, wheel arches, wing edges, inner wings, boot lid, and the seams where the wings are welded on. The outer rocker panels unbolt, which is a gift, so take them off and look at the structure behind them before you talk money. One tell is worth learning. If the doors have closed up at the top at any point, the shell has already lost strength, and no amount of fresh paint changes that. Then decide which car you want. The 1975 to 1980 North American cars carry big impact bumpers and choked engines and are the cheapest way in. The injected Spider 2000 from 1980 gives most of the performance back. Chrome-bumper European cars cost more and always will. Rust-free bodies still turn up in California and the American southwest, which is the practical reason to shop there.

The Story

Driving character

It weighs about 920kg and it wants revs, which is the whole personality in one sentence. The twin cam is smooth and eager rather than torquey, it pulls hard in the top third of the range, and the five-speed box that came as standard from launch is there because the engine needs it. Rowing it along is the point, not a chore. The chassis is honest and slightly old-fashioned in a way that flatters the driver. Wishbones and coils at the front, a coil-sprung live axle located by a Panhard rod and radius arms at the rear, discs on all four corners. It turns in crisply, it tells you what the front tyres are doing, and it runs out of grip gently. The top is the party trick. One catch, one arm, done from the driver's seat without getting out, at a set of lights if you want to. Alfa owners had to work harder. The caveat is American. A 1975 to 1979 federal car with 87 horsepower and impact bumpers is a pleasant open car rather than a quick one, and it is a different machine from a European 1600.

Design

Tjaarda was 32 and had just done the Corvette Rondine for Pininfarina, and he wanted to carry that car's front end onto the Fiat. Fiat said no, too expensive to tool, and what survived instead was the discipline: a low nose with the lamps set into it, a shallow full-length crease down the flank, and a tail that stops abruptly rather than tapering away. There is no ornament anywhere on the 1966 car. It is a shape held together by proportion alone, which is why it has aged so much better than its output figures. The bonnet is the year-code. The 1966 car is flat; the 1,608cc car of 1970 gained the twin power bulges that owners still use as shorthand for a 1600. The family split is worth stating once. Felice Mario Boano drew the 124 Sport Coupe in-house at Centro Stile Fiat, and Fiat built it. The Spider went out to Pininfarina to be designed and assembled, on a wheelbase 140mm shorter than the coupe's. Same platform, same engine, two entirely separate design cultures, and it shows in both cars.

Motorsport pedigree

This is the rare case where the road car chased the results rather than the other way round. Private owners were rallying 124 Spiders almost as soon as they could buy them, and in autumn 1969 Fiat improvised four works cars with the 1,608cc engine lifted from 110 to 120 CV. Alcide Paganelli and Domenico Russo took the 1970 Italian championship with one, plus an outright win on the Rally dell'Elba and a class win at Monte Carlo. Abarth, by then Fiat's competition department, took the project over for 1971 under Ing. Colucci. In 1972 the 124 won the European Rally Championship with Raffaele Pinto and Gino Macaluso, reportedly 11 wins from 21 starts, and only then did the homologation car appear: the Fiat Abarth 124 Rally, shown at Turin that November for Group 4. What followed was four consecutive seasons as runner-up in the manufacturers' championship, 1972 to 1975. Wins came at the Hessen and Acropolis rallies in 1972 and in Poland in 1973, a clean sweep of the 1974 Portuguese TAP Rally, fourth on the 1975 Monte and a podium for Markku Alen. It was never quite quick enough, first against the Lancia Fulvia and then the Stratos, both from inside the same company. The Fiat 131 Abarth replaced it in 1976.

In culture

The 124 Spider's cultural life happened in American driveways rather than on screen. About three quarters of the whole run went to the United States, and for six years from 1975 it was sold there and nowhere else, which made it the default cheap Italian convertible for a generation of Americans who were never going to own an Alfa and knew it. That familiarity cut both ways. Fiat's reputation for rust and electrical temperament produced the backronym every owner has heard, and by January 1983 the company had announced it was giving up on the United States. Before that it had already handed marketing of the Spider and the X1/9 to International Automobile Importers, run by Malcolm Bricklin, who would shortly bring America the Yugo. The cars themselves carried on for three more years wearing Pininfarina's badge instead of Fiat's. The name came back in 2015. Fiat considered launching the new car as an Alfa Romeo Spider before deciding it should be a 124, and built it on the Mazda MX-5 platform. Whatever else that says, it says the badge was worth reviving and the original was the reason.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The case starts with what you get for the outlay. There is no other route to a Pininfarina-designed, Pininfarina-built 1960s Italian roadster at this price, and the mechanical specification was ahead of its rivals when new and still reads well now. The twin cam is a genuinely good engine rather than a period curiosity, and it stayed in production into the 1990s because of it.

The hierarchy inside the range is steep and well understood. At the top sits the Fiat Abarth 124 Rally, a Group 4 homologation car with independent rear suspension, aluminium doors and a fibreglass hard top, of which roughly a thousand were built. Restored ones trade around ten times the money of an ordinary Spider. Below that, the chrome-bumper cars from 1966 to 1974 have pulled steadily away from the rest, and the 1,608cc 1600 of 1970 to 1973 is the one most guides point at as the sweet spot.

The rest is a bargain hiding in plain sight. A 1970s or early 1980s car costs what a decent motorcycle costs, and it is a real Italian sports car with real parts support behind it.

Which one to look for

The grail is the Fiat Abarth 124 Rally, shown at Turin in November 1972 to homologate the works rally car. Independent rear suspension in place of the live axle, fibreglass bonnet, boot and fixed hard top in matt black, perspex rear window, aluminium doors, no bumpers, 938kg with the roll bar fitted, and 128 PS DIN from twin Weber 44 IDFs. Three colours only. Roughly a thousand were built. After that, engine size is the ladder. The 1,608cc 1600 of 1970 to 1973 is the enthusiasts' pick, 110 PS in a light car with the twin bonnet bulges that mark it out. Watch a trap here: the 1,592cc 1600 that replaced it in 1973 is a different engine, longer in the stroke and eight horsepower down. The 1,756cc 1800 is the flexible one, 118 PS in Europe and a strangled 87 PS in emissions form. American buyers should know the Spider 2000 of 1979 to 1982, and inside it the roughly 700 Legend Industries turbo cars of 1981 and 1982, sold through Fiat dealers with a boost gauge in the binnacle. The AS, BS, CS and DS codes you will see in adverts are factory build-series designations, not models.

124 Sport Spider 1400 · 1966–1973

The launch car and the purest shape of the lot: flat bonnet, slim chrome bumpers, no ornament anywhere. 1438cc twin cam, 90 PS, five-speed and four-wheel discs as standard in 1966, which no British rival could match at the price. Early AS cars run a torque-tube rear axle that is prone to cracking and was replaced by trailing arms on the BS from 1969. Under 920kg, and the one to have if the shape matters more than the speed.

124 Sport Spider 1600 · 1970–1977

Two different engines were sold under this name and the difference matters. The 1608cc unit of 1970 to 1973 is the enthusiasts' choice: perfectly square at 80 x 80mm, 110 PS at 6400rpm, twin Weber carburettors, and the twin bonnet bulges that identify it at fifty paces. Hagerty's buying guide calls it the best balance in the range. From 1973 it was replaced by a 1592cc engine with a longer stroke and 108 PS, which is a torquier and slightly duller car wearing the same badge.

124 Sport Spider 1800 · 1973–1979

The flexible one, and the car most Americans actually bought. 1756cc, 118 PS DIN at 6000rpm in European tune. The version sold into emissions markets ran 8.1:1 compression for 87 PS, and by 1978 a federal car was rated 86hp SAE net, so a US 1800 is meaningfully slower than a European 1600 despite the extra capacity. This is also the car that wore the full 5mph impact bumpers from 1975.

Fiat Abarth 124 Rally · 1972–1975

The homologation car, shown at Turin in November 1972 for Group 4 and known in period as the 124 Abarth Stradale. Independent rear suspension replaces the live axle, using lower wishbones, the original trailing arms, an upper strut and an anti-roll bar. Bonnet, boot lid and fixed hard top are fibreglass in matt black, the rear window is perspex, the doors are aluminium, and the bumpers are gone. 128 PS DIN at 6200rpm from twin Weber 44 IDFs, 938kg with the roll bar, over 190km/h. Corsa red, white or light blue, nothing else.

Fiat Spider 2000 · 1979–1982

The last Fiat-badged Spider and the most usable. 1995cc, a front spoiler, a three-spoke wheel and a modernised cabin. It began carburetted at 83 PS, then for the 1980 model year gained a catalytic converter and Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, mandatory in California and optional in the other 49 states. For 1981 the injected 102 PS engine became standard across North America, which handed back most of what a decade of emissions equipment had taken away. A GM three-speed automatic was optional from 1979.

Spider 2000 Turbo (Legend Industries) · 1981–1982

A factory-sanctioned turbo, not an aftermarket bolt-on. Fiat USA commissioned Legend Industries of New York to turbocharge the injected 2.0, and the cars were sold through the normal dealer network. About 120hp against the standard 102, with much more mid-range, a vacuum boost gauge added to the instrument cluster and a turbo decal package on the body. Believed to be five-speed cars almost without exception. Rare now, and rarer still with the turbo system intact and working.

What owning one is like

Rust is the whole ownership question and everything else is detail. The front suspension turrets, the front crossmember, the sills behind those bolt-off outer rockers and the floorpans are where a neglected car dies, and the German club's own buying guide lists eighteen separate zones worth checking. None of this is mysterious and none of it is fast-moving on a dry car, which is why the survivors cluster in California and the American southwest. The mechanical side is kinder than the reputation suggests, with one item that deserves respect. The twin cam runs a rubber toothed belt, and a snapped belt on a 2.0 can put a hole in the block if the fuel pump lobe catches a connecting rod. Change it on schedule and stop worrying about it. After that: the sump sits low and grounds easily, so check it before you buy a lowered car. Earths and connectors corrode and produce dim headlights and faults that move around. Early AS tail lamps are genuinely scarce. On American cars the smog plumbing has usually already been removed by a previous owner, which is worth knowing before you go looking for it.

Upkeep & parts

Mechanically this is one of the cheapest interesting classics to keep running. The twin cam is long-lived, understood everywhere and supported by a parts industry that never went away: Auto Ricambi and Vick Autosports between them will sell you almost anything the car needs, from a water pump to a complete performance long block, and prices are ordinary rather than Italian.

Body panels and trim are the other half of the story and a harder one. Structural steel for the turrets and crossmembers means fabrication rather than a catalogue number, and it is the single line item that decides whether a cheap car is cheap.

Club support is real and easy to reach. Fiat Club America is the largest North American group and runs the annual Freakout gathering; the Fiat 124 Spider Club e.V. in Germany covers the Spider and the Coupe and maintains its own register and buying guide; mirafiori.com has been running as a classic Fiat forum since 1996. For provenance, the Registro Fiat Italiano in Turin is the marque's own registry and issues certification for historic Fiats.
