MG MGA

Overview

MG spent the first half of the 1950s selling America a car designed before the war, because it was. The T-series was upright, slab-sided and charming, and by 1954 it was done. Its replacement came from a shape Syd Enever had drawn in 1951 for the one-off TD that privateer George Phillips raced at Le Mans, then rethought on a new frame with the side rails pushed further apart and the floor slung underneath them, so the driver sat down inside the car rather than perched on top of it. Leonard Lord turned the prototype down in 1952, two weeks after signing Donald Healey; sliding TF sales changed his mind. Announced in September 1955, the MGA gave MG a modern car for the first time in its history: 1,489cc of BMC B-series, a shade under 2,000 lb, drums on all four corners, and a body a lot of people still think is the best-looking thing Abingdon ever built. It worked commercially in a way nothing MG had managed before. Over seven years the factory built more than 100,000 of them, and 5,869 stayed in Britain. Everything else went abroad, most of it to America.

Nothing on an MGA needs electricity to think. Fuelling is twin SU carburettors, ignition is a Lucas distributor with contact breaker points and a coil, and charging is a dynamo through a control box, all of it positive earth. There is no fuel injection, no brake servo, nothing electronic in the steering or suspension. The one component that strands people is the SU electric fuel pump under the rear, which is why owners learn where it lives and how to tap it. Even the Twin Cam's exotica is entirely mechanical: two chain-driven camshafts, twin carburettors, and a compression ratio that demanded correct ignition timing rather than a sensor to protect it.

Hagerty's UK team put the 1600 on its 2026 Bull Market list at £25,700 while noting that MGA values had slipped back over recent years, which is why this reads as stable rather than climbing. Recorded public sales agree: a 1600 topped out at $55,000 in December 2025, while the best Twin Cam result on record remains $168,000 from 2022. The rare cars set the headlines; the ordinary ones move slowly and sell steadily.

What to watch for
Buy the structure. The body is steel with aluminium doors, bonnet and bootlid, it sits on a separate chassis, and the floors are plywood boards, so a car can look solid and still be resting on rot. Get underneath it: the chassis rails, the goalpost crossmember behind the seats, the spring hangers and the sills carry the loads and collect the water. Where alloy panels meet steel, look for the bubbling that comes of two metals and sixty years of damp. Most British-market cars are American re-imports, so restoration quality varies wildly and the paperwork often did not travel with the car. Mechanically it is straightforward. B-series engines are tough but want more than 50psi of oil pressure when hot; low pressure, blue smoke and a wandering temperature gauge together mean a rebuild. Second gear loses its synchro first. The front suspension needs greasing every 1,000 miles and punishes owners who skip it. For the rare cars, verify before you pay. Twin Cams carry their own YD3 chassis series, and the MG Car Club's Twin Cam Group and MGA Register hold records that will confirm a car. Treat any De Luxe claim the same way.

The Story

Driving character

Small numbers, big involvement. A 1500 took 16.0 seconds to reach 60mph and ran out of breath at 97.8mph, and none of that matters at the wheel, because everything is direct. Unassisted rack and pinion steering, a four-speed with no synchro on first, brakes you push properly rather than brush. At a shade under 2,000 lb the car changes direction on the throttle and rewards being carried through a corner rather than braked into one. The B-series is a busy, cheerful, faintly agricultural engine that sounds better than it has any right to and is happiest between 3,000 and 5,000rpm. A Mk II with the 1,622cc engine and taller axle is the relaxed one; it cruises where a 1500 drones. The Twin Cam changes the car's character rather than just its speed. It pulls hard toward 6,000rpm with a hard metallic edge nothing else at Abingdon had, and the four-wheel Dunlop discs finally give the chassis brakes to match. In the roadster you sit low behind a curved screen, with sidescreens instead of windows and no exterior door handles, and the whole thing feels closer to a period racing car than to a Sunday tourer.

Design

The MGA's shape is a race car's, and not by analogy. Syd Enever built the body for the TD that George Phillips took to Le Mans in 1951, decided the driver sat far too high in it, and drew a new frame with the side members pushed out to the edge of the body and the floor hung beneath them. That one decision, seating people inside the structure instead of above it, gave the car its low nose, its unbroken flank and a windscreen that looks like it belongs there. The details reward attention. The roadster has no exterior door handles at all, only sidescreens and a hood to be argued with. The coupé got wind-up windows, locking doors and a wrapped screen, and is the better-looking car from some angles and the more awkward one to climb into from all of them. Doors, bonnet and bootlid are aluminium over a steel body. The Mk II is the only visual revision in seven years: the grille recessed rather than proud, Morris Mini tail lamps laid flat beneath the boot lid. Purists prefer the earlier face. MG advertised the car as the first of a new line, which for once was description rather than copy.

Motorsport pedigree

The MGA raced before anyone could buy one. Three EX182 prototypes, production cars in all but name, ran at Le Mans in June 1955, three months ahead of the launch. Two finished 12th and 17th overall; the third crashed at Maison Blanche and ended Dick Jacobs's driving career. Cars from the same batch went to the Ulster TT at Dundrod weeks later. Sebring became the American proving ground. Three near-showroom cars took fourth, fifth and sixth in class in 1956, a Twin Cam won its class in 1957, and works cars came back in 1959 and 1960. The most famous individual MGA is SRX 210, the Twin Cam coupé Ted Lund and Colin Escott entered at Le Mans three years running. It was going well in 1959 when Escott hit a dog on the Mulsanne straight in the eighteenth hour; bored out to 1,762cc for 1960, it returned and won its class. The engine's own record is the outlier. EX181, running a supercharged twin-cam derivative, carried Stirling Moss to 245.64mph at Bonneville in 1957 and Phil Hill to 254.91mph in 1959, still the fastest MG. In American club racing, Kent Prather won six SCCA G Production national titles in an MGA between 1986 and 2005.

In culture

For a decade of Americans, the MGA was what a sports car looked like. It landed at the peak of the postwar import boom, cost less than a Corvette, and arrived through a dealer network that had already spent ten years teaching the country what MG meant. The shape did the rest. Very nearly the whole production run went abroad: 5,869 cars out of six figures stayed home in Britain. Its best-known screen appearance is a red 1600 that opens Blue Hawaii in 1961 and carries Elvis Presley around Oahu through the first half of the film. That car is now in the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum at Graceland, parked in the same building as the pink Cadillac, though whether Elvis bought it himself or the studio did is still argued over on owner forums. The deeper footprint is quieter and more durable. The MGA is the car that taught a generation of Americans to go club racing on a Sunday, and it never really stopped: Kent Prather was still winning national championships in one in 2005, more than forty years after the last was built.

Why collectors want it

The MGA is the cheapest way into a genuinely beautiful 1950s sports car, and that has been true for so long that people forget how good the car is. Hagerty's UK valuation team put the 1600 on its 2026 Bull Market list at £25,700, calling it the sweet spot of the range, and the logic holds: the pushrod cars are quick enough to enjoy, simple enough to keep, and better supported than almost anything else of their age.

The hierarchy inside the range is steep and clear. The Twin Cam sits on top for rarity and reputation, 2,111 built and the only MGA that will genuinely see 113mph; the best public sale on record is $168,000, for a 1959 roadster in 2022. Below it, the 395 De Luxe cars are the quiet connoisseur's choice, with Twin Cam chassis and four-wheel discs under a pushrod engine that will not hole a piston. Coupés account for just under 10,000 cars across the whole run and still trade at a discount to roadsters, which is the range's obvious value anomaly. Everything else is the ordinary car, and the ordinary car is the one most people should buy.

Which one to look for

Four cars wear the MGA badge and they are not interchangeable. The 1500 (1955-59) is the purest shape and the slowest, 68hp and then 72hp, with drums on all four wheels. The 1600 (1959-60) is the one to buy: 1,588cc, 79.5bhp, front disc brakes, and the best balance of pace and simplicity in the range. The 1600 Mk II (1960-62) is the quickest pushrod car, 1,622cc and 90bhp with a taller final drive that makes it the long-distance choice, though the inset grille and horizontal Mini tail lamps divide opinion. Then the two that matter to collectors. The Twin Cam (1958-60) is the one people underrate and then overpay for: a 108hp twin-cam alloy head on the B-series block, Dunlop discs at all four corners, centre-lock peg-drive wheels, 113mph, and 2,111 built before warranty claims killed it. It is not a fragile car today. It was a fragile car in 1958, in the wrong hands. The De Luxe is the insider's answer. Just 395 were built, 82 as 1600s and 313 as Mk IIs, using leftover Twin Cam chassis and brakes with the ordinary pushrod engine. All of the hardware, none of the anxiety.

1500 · 1955–1959

The launch car. 1,489cc BMC B-series with twin SU H4 carburettors, 68hp at first and soon 72hp, drum brakes on all four wheels. The Motor recorded 97.8mph and 0-60mph in 16.0 seconds from a test car costing £844 with tax. A coupé with wind-up windows and locking doors joined in 1956; the roadster made do with sidescreens and no exterior door handles at all. Purest version of Syd Enever's shape, and the slowest.

1600 · 1959–1960

The volume car and the one most buyers should want. The pushrod engine went to 1,588cc and 79.5bhp in May 1959, and front disc brakes arrived with rear drums retained. Externally near-identical to the 1500 apart from separate rear stop/tail and indicator lamps and 1600 badging on the boot and cowl. The Motor recorded 96.1mph and 13.3 seconds to 60mph at £940 with tax. Hagerty's UK valuation team named it the sweet spot of the range on its 2026 Bull Market list.

1600 De Luxe · 1959–1960

Built from Twin Cam hardware left stranded when that model was dropped: complete modified Twin Cam chassis or the leftover four-wheel Dunlop discs and centre-lock wheels, carrying the ordinary 1,588cc pushrod engine. All of the Twin Cam's braking and running gear with none of its temperament, which is why it is the insider's pick of the range. Verify any De Luxe claim against the registers before paying the premium, because the wheels and discs are the easy part to fake.

1600 Mk II · 1960–1962

The final and fastest pushrod MGA. Bore went from 75.4mm to 76.2mm for 1,622cc, the head was revised with larger valves and reworked combustion chambers for 90bhp, and a taller 4.1 final drive made it the long-distance car of the range. Road & Track estimated 105mph and 12.8 seconds to 60mph in September 1961. Recognisable by the inset grille and the Morris Mini tail lamps laid horizontally below the boot lid, the only significant styling change in seven years.

1600 Mk II De Luxe · 1960–1962

The rarest way to buy an MGA that still starts on a cold morning. Same recipe as the 1600 De Luxe applied to the Mk II: Twin Cam chassis, four-wheel Dunlop discs and centre-lock wheels under the 1,622cc 90bhp pushrod engine. 313 were built, making it more numerous than the 1600 De Luxe but still one of the rarest specifications Abingdon shipped, and the two De Luxe types together account for just 395 of more than 100,000 MGAs.

Twin Cam · 1958–1960

1,588cc twin-cam alloy head on the B-series block, 108bhp at 6,700rpm, 9.9:1 compression later dropped to 8.3:1 on a 100bhp version. Dunlop discs at all four corners with no servo, Dunlop peg-drive centre-lock steel wheels of the type used on racing Jaguars, and no wire wheel option. The Motor timed one at 113mph and 9.1 seconds to 60mph. Warranty claims for holed pistons and heavy oil consumption killed it in April 1960; rebuilt to modern practice it is a fine car, and the connoisseur's MGA.

What owning one is like

Owning an MGA is a rust conversation first and a very pleasant one afterwards. The separate chassis rots at the rails, the spring hangers and the goalpost structure behind the seats; the sills go; and the plywood floorboards rot from above when the hood leaks, which it will. Where the aluminium doors, bonnet and bootlid meet steel, corrosion works from the inside out. None of it is mysterious, and all of it is visible once the car is in the air. Mechanically it asks for attention rather than money. Grease the front suspension every 1,000 miles or wear it out. Keep an eye on the rear axle oil level, because a surplus finds its way into the rear drums. Expect second gear to lose its synchro first. The Twin Cam carries a reputation earned by holed pistons in period, when 9.9:1 compression met indifferent fuel and dealers who did not understand the ignition timing. Rebuilt to current practice at lower compression, it is a usable car, and the chromed bores and rings that made it drink oil get sorted in the same rebuild. The Twin Cam that frightens people is a 1959 one, not a 2026 one.

Upkeep & parts

Almost nothing on an MGA is unobtainable. Moss Motors and the British MG specialists list essentially the entire car, from chassis sections and floorboards to trim and hoods, at prices that keep the arithmetic sane on a car in this bracket. B-series engines are shared with a generation of BMC saloons and with the MGB, so machining and rebuild parts are everywhere, and plenty of tired MGAs run MGB units.

Club support is unusually deep. The MG Car Club's MGA Register keeps records on more than 6,500 cars worldwide and runs an annual MGA Day; its Twin Cam Group, founded in 1966, holds the ownership history for the rare cars and publishes the TwinCaMGazette. Budget by job rather than by year. Mechanical work is cheap by classic standards and structural work is not, and a full chassis and body restoration will always cost more than the finished car is worth on paper. That, rather than sentiment, is the argument for buying one somebody else has already sorted.
