Overview

BMW's Neue Klasse sedans had rebuilt the company after near bankruptcy, but they were saloons, and BMW wanted a flagship people would actually want to look at. The 2000C and 2000CS coupes of 1965, styled by BMW's Wilhelm Hofmeister and built under contract by Karmann in Rheine, were the first attempt: distinctive, a little awkward, and underpowered on the four-cylinder engine they shared with the sedans. In 1968 BMW stretched the nose and wheelbase to fit the new six-cylinder engine from the E3 saloon, and the result earned its own type number: E9. The 2800 CS that opened the range gave the shape the power it deserved, and the 3.0 CS and fuel-injected 3.0 CSi that followed in 1971 sharpened it further. Then came the car that made the whole family matter beyond BMW showrooms: the 3.0 CSL, a homologation special stripped of soundproofing and dressed in aluminum panels so BMW could go touring car racing. Over 30,546 six-cylinder coupes were built between 1968 and 1975, across five distinct model names, before the E9 handed the shape down to the 6 Series. Few coupes did more with one greenhouse.

The carbureted 2800 CS, 3.0 CS and 2.5 CS run points ignition and twin Zenith carburetors, with no electronics anywhere in the fuel or ignition path. The 3.0 CSi and 3.0 CSL's injected engines use Bosch D-Jetronic, the first mass-produced electronic fuel injection system, which reads intake manifold pressure through an analog control unit to trigger the injectors; it has no microprocessor and nothing resembling a modern ECU. Steering, brakes and the gearbox are entirely mechanical on every variant.

The carbureted 3.0 CS is the volume car and sets the low end of the band; the fuel-injected 3.0 CSi commands a real premium (CLASSIC.COM's benchmark puts CSi roughly 45 percent above CS) for genuine performance rather than badge value alone. Both have climbed steadily as the E9's motorsport story reaches younger buyers. The 3.0 CSL, especially aero-kit "Batmobile" cars, trades in a different bracket entirely, benchmarked well over $200,000, and is excluded from this band.

What to watch for
Everything starts with the body. Karmann's coupe shells had none of the rust protection BMW's own Dingolfing-built sedans got, and unibody rot in the sills, floors, and rear shock towers is the single biggest value factor on any E9. Have a specialist check it in person before you check anything else. Beyond that, know what you are actually buying: 3.0 CS and CSi share looks but not character, and the CSi's Bosch D-Jetronic injection is original to those cars and shouldn't be "corrected" to carburetors by a previous owner chasing simplicity. On a 3.0 CSL, verify the chassis number against BMW's production records before paying CSL money, since the visual kit has been replicated onto standard 3.0 CS shells for decades and a clone is not a small difference in price. Cooling is the E9's real mechanical weak point: the six-cylinder's factory fan struggles in slow traffic, and an overheated engine can warp the aluminum head. Confirm a working, ideally upgraded, cooling system before anything else mechanical.

The Story

Driving character

An E9 does not feel like a modern six-cylinder BMW, and that is the appeal. The M30 straight six is unhurried rather than urgent, a long-stroke engine that builds a wave of torque low down and pulls cleanly to its redline with a smooth, mechanical thrum through the twin exhausts rather than a rasp. Carbureted 3.0 CS cars are the more relaxed of the pair; the fuel-injected CSi responds crisper off idle and revs with more purpose. The four-speed gearbox is long-throw and deliberate rather than snappy, entirely appropriate for a car built to cover ground rather than attack a corner. Unassisted steering on most cars weights up nicely at speed but asks for real effort parking, and the semi-trailing-arm rear suspension, shared with the Neue Klasse sedans underneath the glamour, will step out if you lift off mid-corner, a trait every E9 owner learns to respect quickly. None of it feels nervous. At a cruise, with the tall windscreen and long hood ahead of you, the E9 does exactly what a grand tourer should: it makes distance disappear.

Design

The shape is Wilhelm Hofmeister's, carried over from his 2000CS with a longer nose grafted on to fit the new six-cylinder engine, and it introduced the detail that outlived every other part of the car: the kinked forward lean of the C-pillar, still called the Hofmeister kink on every BMW built since. Karmann built the unibody in Rheine to BMW's design, wrapping a low, glassy greenhouse and a long hood over the New Class mechanicals underneath. Chrome trim and slim bumpers define the pre-1974 cars; U.S.-market 1974 models gained the era's mandated 5mph impact bumpers, which the European cars never wore. The CSL's contribution to the design story runs the other way: its "Racing Kit" aerodynamics, a deep front air dam, black fender fins, and a tall roof-mounted wing, were function first and only became style afterward, once the CSL's nickname stuck. That same coupe body later became a canvas rather than just a shape, when BMW handed two 3.0 CSLs to artists for its Art Car program in 1975 and 1976, the E9's boldest design statement of all.

Motorsport pedigree

The CSL was the reason BMW built a dedicated motorsport arm in the first place. BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded in 1972 with the CSL homologation program as its first job, and under Jochen Neerpasch the car delivered almost immediately: Toine Hezemans won the 1973 European Touring Car Championship driving one, and Hezemans and Dieter Quester co-drove a 3.0 CSL to a class win at that year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 1973 aero package, developed with Alpina and nicknamed the Batmobile kit, made the car dominant, and CSL drivers took the European Touring Car Championship in every season from 1975 through 1979, six titles in total. In Group 5 form, the turbocharged 3.5 CSL won three rounds of the 1976 World Championship for Makes. The CSL crossed the Atlantic too, racing in the 1975 IMSA GT Championship with drivers including Brian Redman, Sam Posey, and Ronnie Peterson taking race wins, giving Porsche's IMSA GT programme a genuine fight for the first time in years.

In culture

The CSL earned its Batmobile nickname honestly, from a factory aero kit so extreme that period journalists reached for comic-book comparisons rather than technical language, and the name has stuck to the car harder than its own model number ever did. BMW leaned into that spectacle rather than away from it: in 1975 the sculptor Alexander Calder painted a 3.0 CSL entered at Le Mans, launching the BMW Art Car program, and Frank Stella followed in 1976 with a black and white grid pattern that turned the coupe's every curve into a diagram. Neither art car finished its race, but both did what BMW actually wanted, turning a touring car into a rolling exhibition piece years before "collaboration" was a marketing word. Among enthusiasts, the E9, and the CSL especially, occupies the odd space of being simultaneously a serious motorsport legend and a design object, recognizable to people who have never followed a single lap of European Touring Car racing but know the wing, the livery, and the name.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The E9 is one of the rare cases where the racing history genuinely explains the road car's market, rather than just decorating it. The 3.0 CS is the entry point: a good driving, honestly proportioned six-cylinder GT that never stopped being beautiful. Step up to the fuel-injected 3.0 CSi and you are buying the variant enthusiasts actually want, with real performance to match the looks. Above both sits the 3.0 CSL, in a different market bracket entirely, because it is not really a road car wearing a racing story, it is the racing car BMW had to sell to the public to be allowed to compete. The aero-kit "Batmobile" versions built from 1973 sit higher still, priced for what they represent: the machine that turned BMW Motorsport GmbH from a new division into a touring car dynasty and gave the company its first Art Car. Buy a CS to drive it. Buy a CSL to own a piece of why BMW built an M division at all.

Which one to look for

The 3.0 CS is the sensible one: carbureted, four-speed or automatic, and the car most owners will actually end up with. The 3.0 CSi is the one to chase if you can, the same shape with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection lifting output to 200hp and giving the car the performance its looks promise. The 2800 CS that started the range in 1968 has less power and drum-assisted rear brakes, but it is the original shape before the 1974 U.S. bumper regulations intruded, and the 2.5 CS built after the 1973 oil crisis is a genuine oddity, a smaller-engined economy CS that only 844 people ever bought. Grail territory belongs to the 3.0 CSL, and within the CSL, to the aero-kit "Batmobile" cars built from July 1973 with the deep front dam, fender fins, and roof-mounted rear wing that BMW Motorsport developed with Alpina. Right-hand-drive CSLs, built in smaller numbers and never quite as light as the German-market cars, are their own sub-collectible.

2.5 CS · 1974–1975

A response to the 1973 oil crisis: the same coupe body with the smaller 2,494cc six from the 2500 sedan, rated 150hp. Never sold in the United States, and the rarest of the volume trims by a wide margin.

2800 CS · 1968–1971

The car that launched the range, and the first coupe to carry the new M30 six. 168hp, disc front and drum rear brakes carried over from the New Class sedans, and the original slim-bumper nose before U.S. safety rules intruded. Less powerful than the 3.0-liter cars that followed, but the purest early shape.

3.0 CS · 1971–1975

The volume car of the range: twin-Zenith-carburetor 180hp six, four-speed manual or three-speed automatic, and four-wheel disc brakes replacing the 2800's drums out back. Honest, usable, and the E9 most buyers will actually own.

3.0 CSi · 1971–1975

The performance road trim, using Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and higher compression to lift output to 200hp. Same body and options as the 3.0 CS, but the injected engine is the one enthusiasts specifically seek out, and it commands a real premium over the carbureted car.

3.0 CSL · 1971–1975

The homologation special, built only so BMW could race it. Thinner-gauge steel, aluminum doors, hood and trunk lid, and plastic side windows cut over 300 pounds versus a standard CS. Engine displacement grew twice, first to 3,003cc and then to 3,153cc, to fit European racing's over-three-liter class. The final cars, homologated from July 1973, added the "Racing Kit" aerodynamic package, a deep front air dam, fender fins and a tall roof-mounted wing shipped loose in the trunk, since it was illegal to drive with on German roads. That aero kit earned the nickname "Batmobile" and is the version collectors mean when they use it. Right-hand-drive UK-market CSLs kept sound deadening, electric windows and standard bumpers at the importer's request, so they are heavier than the German-market cars despite sharing the name.

What owning one is like

Rust is the honest headline. Karmann's coupe bodies were not built to the standard of BMW's own sedan plant, and unibody corrosion in the sills, floor pans, and rear suspension mounting points is common on unrestored cars; a bad one can look presentable from ten feet and be structurally compromised underneath. The other genuine weak spot is cooling. The factory fan was undersized for the M30 six even in period, and a car that runs hot in slow traffic risks warping the aluminum cylinder head against the iron block, since the two metals expand at different rates. Owners commonly fit an upgraded fan or an electric conversion, and it is worth confirming one is in place. Heating and factory air conditioning were never strong points either, and cabin ergonomics have a few period quirks, like a turn signal stalk on the right rather than the left, that surprise new owners more than they bother long-term ones. None of this is unusual for a car of its age. What it means in practice is simple: buy the straightest, driest body you can find, and treat everything else as ordinary maintenance.

Upkeep & parts

Mechanically, an E9 is a conventional BMW straight six under a striking body, and the M30 engine, gearboxes, and running gear are well within reach of any competent independent specialist, with parts support from BMW Classic alongside a strong reproduction and used-parts network built up over decades. The E9 Coupe Club and marque-focused specialists in Europe and North America have documented the car's production changes in detail, which matters given how many small differences separate a 2800 CS from a 3.0 CS from a CSi. Body and trim parts are the tighter budget line: reproduction bumpers, trim, and glass exist but cost more and take longer to source than mechanical parts, and genuine CSL aluminum body panels are scarce enough that damage to one is a real event, not a routine repair. Budget accordingly for rust repair or prevention over the life of ownership rather than as a one-time cost, since it is the recurring expense that actually determines what an E9 costs to keep. Routine running costs are otherwise unremarkable for a car of the era.
