Porsche 944

Overview

The 944 is the car that paid for everything else Porsche did in the 1980s, and it is still treated as the cheap one. It came out of the 924, which had been designed for Volkswagen and always carried that stigma, and fixed the two things people complained about: it got proper flared bodywork derived from the 924 Carrera GT, and it got an engine Porsche actually built, a 2.5-litre four that was in essence half of the 928's V8. The layout was the good part of the 924 kept intact, with the gearbox in a rear transaxle giving almost exactly even weight distribution, 50.7 per cent front and 49.3 rear. It worked immediately. By Porsche's own account the 944 accounted for more than 51 per cent of total company production after its first year, and around 163,000 were built between 1982 and 1991, making it the most successful sports car in the company's history until the Boxster. Both of the things people say about it are true. It is the accessible Porsche, and it is the reason Porsche was still there when the good times ended.

Middle of the scale, and the position is set by engine management rather than driver aids. Every 944 runs Bosch Motronic, a genuine digital engine control unit managing both fuel injection and ignition timing from a mapped program, so there is no distributor advance mechanism and no carburettor anywhere in the range; the Turbo adds boost control to the same system. Around it sit anti-lock brakes, available and then standard on later cars, electric windows and mirrors, a central warning system in the instrument cluster and, on the Turbo S and S2, more sophisticated suspension and brake hardware. What holds it below a 4 is the absence of everything the following decade brought: the throttle is a cable, the steering is hydraulically assisted, there is no traction control, no stability system and no electronic damping, and the gearbox is a purely mechanical five-speed.

The base 944 averages $16,666 on classic.com, the Turbo around $29,097, and the exceptional cars have started to post outlier results, including $202,500 for a 1988 Turbo in November 2025. Two things drive the trend: the supply of unmodified cars is shrinking as more get turned into track cars, and buyers priced out of air-cooled 911s have discovered that a transaxle car offers better balance for a tenth of the money. What to watch for
The 944 is cheap to buy and not cheap to neglect, and the gap between those two facts is where buyers get caught. The engine is an interference design with a timing belt and a second balance-shaft belt driven off it, and specialists put the change interval around 30,000 miles with a three to five year limit regardless of mileage. A snapped belt bends valves. Ask for dated receipts, not assurances, and price the job in if there are none. Then check the clutch and the torque tube: the drive from engine to rear transaxle runs through a sealed tube with bearings that wear, and the noise they make is easy to blame on something cheaper. On Turbos, look for evidence the cooling system and turbocharger oil supply have been maintained, because heat is what kills these cars. Electrically, the DME control unit, the relays and the instrument cluster all suffer with age. Rust is a minor concern by the standards of this era thanks to galvanised bodywork, but check the sills, the battery tray and the sunroof drains. Buy the car with a folder.

The Story

Driving character

The 944 flatters a driver in a way that few cars at this money manage. The transaxle layout puts the mass almost exactly between the axles, the car sits on a wide track for its size, and the result is a chassis that stays neutral much further into a corner than the power justifies, then tells you exactly what it is doing when it finally lets go. Steering is hydraulically assisted but still full of information, and the brakes on the wide-body cars are far better than the performance needs. The engine is the divisive part. A big four-cylinder is never going to sound like a flat six, and the 2.5 is gruff and industrious rather than melodic, its balance shafts smoothing out what would otherwise be a serious vibration. It pulls cleanly and revs willingly and it is genuinely fast enough in S2 form. The Turbo is a different proposition, with real lag below 3,000 rpm and then a hard, sustained shove that keeps building; it rewards planning. The gearchange across the range is long-throw and mechanical, and the driving position is one of the best of the decade.

Design

The 944's shape is the 924's, improved in exactly the right place. Harm Lagaay's original 924 body was clean but narrow, and the 944 took the flared arches developed for the 924 Carrera GT and made them production, which widened the track, filled out the proportions and turned a slightly weedy shape into a purposeful one. The flares are integrated rather than bolted on, blending into the doors and the tail, and they are the single change that made the car look like a Porsche rather than a Volkswagen project. Everything else is disciplined 1980s Porsche: pop-up headlamps, a huge glass hatch, a full-width rear light panel and almost no ornament. Inside, the early cars carried over the 924's angular dashboard and the 1985 revision brought the oval dash that most people prefer, along with better seats and a more logical layout. Wheels are how you date a car at a glance, from the early phone dials through the Turbo's flat discs to the Club Sport-style Cup wheels of the last cars.

Motorsport pedigree

The 944's competition story starts before the car was announced. At Le Mans in 1981 Porsche entered what it called a 924 GTP, driven by Walter Röhrl and Juergen Barth, which finished seventh overall running a 2.5-litre four; the car was effectively the 944 in disguise, using the engine of a model Porsche had not yet made public. From 1986 the factory ran the 944 Turbo Cup, a one-make series across five countries with 192 purpose-built Cup cars that could reach nearly 274 km/h and run to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, and which served as a proving ground for suspension and brake developments that fed back into road cars. The lasting legacy is at club level. The 944 became one of the definitive grassroots racing cars in North America through NASA's 944 Spec class and the Porsche Club of America's own 944 Cup, both built specifically around keeping costs low and rewarding driver skill. Thirty years on, more 944s are probably racing on any given weekend than any other Porsche.

In culture

The 944 arrived exactly when the Porsche badge became shorthand for a certain kind of 1980s success, and it caught the full force of that: it was the Porsche a young professional could actually finance, which made it both the best-selling car the company had ever built and the one purists were quickest to dismiss. That framing has proved sticky. Where the 911 collected film roles and posters, the 944 collected a reputation for being the affordable one, and for years the phrase cheap Porsche did more to set its value than anything about how it drives. What it built instead was a participation culture. The 944 has arguably done more to put ordinary people on racetracks than any other Porsche, through 944 Spec and 944 Cup, and its owner forums are among the most technically detailed anywhere. The generation has never picked up a nickname of its own; the piece of vernacular everybody knows is 951, which is Porsche's internal type number for the Turbo and belongs to that car alone.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

The 944's case is that it is the best-handling cheap Porsche ever made and the market is only part-way through admitting it. classic.com puts the average base 944 at $16,666, which buys a genuinely balanced rear-transaxle sports car with Porsche build quality and one of the deepest technical communities in the hobby. Above that the hierarchy is clear and the gaps are widening. The 220 PS Turbo, universally called the 951, averages around $29,097 and is the one that has moved the most; the very best have gone much further, with a 1988 Turbo taking $202,500 in November 2025. The 3.0-litre S2 is the connoisseur's naturally aspirated car and the S2 Cabriolet is the rarest mainstream body. The 190 PS 944 S sits awkwardly between the base car and the Turbo and is consequently the value buy. What is unusual here is how little separates a driver from a good car in absolute terms: a few thousand dollars, on a car where condition and service history determine everything about what ownership costs.

Which one to look for

Five cars worth separating. The base 944 of 1982 to 1989 is the volume model, starting at 150 PS and rising to 163 through the run, and the later cars with the oval dashboard and improved brakes are noticeably the better buy. The 944 S of 1987 to 1988 adds a 16-valve head for 190 PS but keeps the standard body and brakes, and it is the least loved of the range and therefore the cheapest way into a twin-cam. The S2 of 1989 to 1991 is the one enthusiasts recommend: three litres, 211 PS, the largest production four-cylinder engine of its time, with the Turbo's wider body and brakes. The S2 Cabriolet, built from 1989, is the only open 944 and the rarest mainstream variant. Above all of them the Turbo of 1985 to 1991, known to everyone as the 951, is the one that changed how the range was regarded: 220 PS from a turbocharged 2.5, and 250 PS in Turbo S form with a top speed of 261 km/h. If the plan involves track days, the Turbo and the S2 are the two that reward it.

944 · 1982–1989

944 S · 1987–1988

A 16-valve head on the 2.5 for 190 PS, in the narrow body with standard brakes. Caught between the base car and the Turbo when new and never quite found its audience, which makes it the cheapest twin-cam 944 today.

944 S2 · 1989–1991

Three litres, 211 PS, the largest production four-cylinder engine of its time, in the Turbo's wide body with its brakes and suspension. The enthusiast's naturally aspirated choice and the most complete non-turbo 944.

944 S2 Cabriolet · 1989–1991

The only open 944, built on the S2 with reinforced structure. The rarest of the mainstream variants and the one that has held value best among the naturally aspirated cars.

944 Turbo (951) · 1985–1991

Known universally by its internal type number. A turbocharged 2.5 with 220 PS, wide body, uprated brakes and cooling, and a 0-100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. The variant that made the range credible against a 911.

944 Turbo Cup · 1986–

Purpose-built race cars for Porsche's own one-make series, launched in 1986 across five countries. Nearly 274 km/h and 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, and a development platform whose brake and suspension work fed back into the road cars.

944 Turbo S

The hard version: 250 PS and a top speed of 261 km/h, with limited-slip differential, stiffer suspension and bigger brakes. The most capable road 944 Porsche built and the one that sets the top of the market.

What owning one is like

A well-kept 944 is close to an everyday car and a neglected one is a project, and there is not much in between. The good side is real: galvanised bodywork that resists rust, a well-made interior, genuine luggage space under the hatch, and a chassis that stays enjoyable at legal speeds. The maintenance is where attention is needed. The belt service is the item that defines ownership, and it is not optional on an interference engine; owners who treat it as a scheduled cost rather than a repair have a straightforward time. Clutches are a gearbox-out job because of the transaxle layout, so it is worth doing the torque tube bearings and rear main seal at the same time. Ageing electrics show up as instrument cluster faults, failing relays and tired window motors. Turbos add heat management to the list, and a cooling system in perfect order is the difference between a reliable 951 and a frustrating one. Running costs are modest for the marque, and the depth of documented knowledge means very few jobs have to be figured out from first principles.

Upkeep & parts

Parts supply is one of the best reasons to own one. Service and mechanical parts are widely available new, the specialist trade covers the model-specific items, Porsche Classic supports a growing list, and the racing classes built around the car keep suspension, brake and cooling parts in constant production. Interior trim and switchgear are the harder end, as with most 1980s cars, and good used parts trade actively. Budget for the belt and water pump service on a fixed interval, and set aside for a clutch and torque tube overhaul as a once-in-a-long-while job. Club and community support is exceptional: the Porsche Club of America runs the 944 Cup, NASA runs 944 Spec, and Rennlist's 944 and 951 forums plus Clark's Garage hold detailed, freely available procedures for essentially every job on the car. Independent specialists who know these cars exist in most markets, and because the 944 was built in numbers, their labour rates are usually more reasonable than the badge would suggest.
