Ford GT40

Overview

Henry Ford II went to Maranello in 1963 to buy Ferrari and walked away when Enzo Ferrari refused to hand over control of his own racing team, specifically the right to go to Indianapolis. What followed is the most expensive act of corporate spite in motoring. Ford had already torn up the AMA racing ban in June 1962 and launched Total Performance, so the machinery was in place; now there was a target. Eric Broadley's mid-engined Lola Mk6 already carried a Ford V8, so Ford hired Broadley, added Roy Lunn and the former Aston Martin team manager John Wyer, and set up Ford Advanced Vehicles at Slough. The name is a measurement: forty inches tall at the top of the windscreen, the lowest the regulations allowed. It did not work at first. Nothing finished Le Mans in 1964 or 1965, Carroll Shelby's operation took the programme over, and Ken Miles called the thing a bloody awful car before making it into a winner. From 1966 the GT40 won Le Mans four years running, twice with a seven-litre American car and twice with a five-year-old British one. About 105 chassis exist. Nothing else has beaten Ferrari so completely.

Nothing on a period GT40 is electronic in any modern sense. The engines are carburetted, the ignition runs off points and a coil, and there is no engine management, no traction control, no anti-lock braking and no power assistance anywhere. The gearboxes are unsynchronised racing transaxles worked by rod: a Colotti T37 four-speed on the earliest cars, the sturdier ZF 5DS-25 five-speed once the Colotti proved it would not survive a race distance, and a Kar Kraft T-44 four-speed behind the 427s. The only electrical systems that matter are lights, starter and ignition, and on a car built to race they were kept deliberately sparse.

Chassis history sets the price here far more than condition does, so treat the band as describing an ordinary Mk I production chassis with clean provenance and no Le Mans result. The record is $9.8 million for chassis P/1046, the 1966 winner, at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2018. The six Mk IVs and the seven Mk IIIs trade above the band on rarity alone. Safir Mk V continuations and later licensed cars are a wholly separate market averaging around $126,000 and should never be compared against these figures.

What to watch for
Buy the file first and the car second. Original chassis run GT40P/1000 to GT40P/1086, eighty-seven production numbers inside a total of roughly 105 cars, and almost every one of them has a documented life. The complication is that Mk IIs were built on Mk I monocoques and carry the same GT40P numbering, so the variant a car is described as today may not be the variant it left Slough as. Cars were also rebodied, re-tubbed and re-engined mid-season during period racing, which is normal for the type and not automatically a problem, but it has to be traced rather than assumed. Then there is Safir. Safir Engineering built roughly forty Mk V continuations at Byfleet in Surrey between 1980 and 1988, and they carry GT40P chassis numbers continuing the original sequence past 1086, so a genuine Safir will show something like GT40-P-1115. These are honest, well-made cars sold as what they are, and Safir GT40 Spares still holds the GT40 trademark. Confusion only arises secondhand. Physically, look at the sheet-steel monocoque before anything else, because everything above it is replaceable and the tub is what the money is attached to.

The Story

Driving character

The first thing anyone who has driven one mentions is the heat. The radiator is at your feet, the engine is behind your shoulders, the water pipes run between the seats, the windows do not open and there is essentially no insulation, so on a warm day the cockpit becomes unbearable after about half an hour. Drivers did twenty-four hours of that. The seating position is flat on your back because the whole car is forty inches tall, and the view out is a long low nose and not much else. The gearchange is the other thing. These are unsynchronised racing transaxles worked through a rod linkage, and the early Colotti four-speed was so fragile that ZF was commissioned to build the 5DS-25 five-speed specifically to replace it. Get a change wrong and the car tells you immediately. With a 289 behind you it feels light and fizzing and eager, closer to a big Lotus than to anything American; with the 427 it becomes a different animal entirely, all torque and noise and a top end that made the Mulsanne straight genuinely frightening. Neither has power steering, power brakes or assistance of any kind.

Design

The shape started as somebody else's. Eric Broadley's Lola Mk6 GT was already a mid-engined coupe with a Ford V8 in it, and Ford essentially bought the idea along with the man, then developed it at Bromley and later at Slough with Roy Lunn and John Wyer. The single most consequential design constraint is in the name. Forty inches at the top of the windscreen was the minimum the regulations allowed, and everything about the car follows from getting under it: the reclined seating, the shallow glass, and a cabin you fold yourself into rather than sit in. The Mk III is the only version styled for civilian use, and it shows in the round headlights, the softened suspension and a rear deck extended to make room for luggage. Almost nobody liked it at the time. The Mk IV is a different design altogether, drawn in Dearborn around the J-car's honeycomb tub with a longer nose, a new roofline and a Can-Am style tail, which is why it does not really look like the other three. Roy Lunn's team did that one, and Kar Kraft built it.

Motorsport pedigree

The record is the whole point. Nothing finished Le Mans in 1964 or 1965; the first win anywhere came at the Daytona Continental 2000km in February 1965 with Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby. Miles and Ruby then won the Daytona 24 Hours in February 1966 and Sebring in March, which sets up the part everyone knows. Ford took thirteen cars to Le Mans that June, eight Mk IIs and five Mk Is, and three of them finished. Miles led by nearly four laps before Ford ordered a formation finish. Both leading cars completed 360 laps, and because the number two car of Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon had started around sixty feet further back on the grid, it had covered more ground and was declared the winner. Miles was second, denied the Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans sweep, and was killed testing the J-car at Riverside on 17 August that year. Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt won in 1967 in a Mk IV, 388 laps and 5,232.9km, the only Le Mans victory with an American chassis, engine, team, drivers and tyres. Chassis GT40P/1075 then won 1968 and 1969 for John Wyer, the second time by 120 metres.

In culture

For fifty years the GT40's cultural life ran on photographs, and then a film rewrote it. Ford v Ferrari, released in 2019 and called Le Mans '66 outside America, put Christian Bale's Ken Miles and Matt Damon's Carroll Shelby in front of an audience that had never heard of either, and won Academy Awards for film editing and sound editing, the first racing picture to take an Oscar since Grand Prix. It is not a documentary. The 1966 finish in particular is compressed and dramatised, and the actual reason McLaren and Amon won is a grid-position clause in the regulations rather than anything anybody did at the line. The other cultural artefact is smaller and stranger. When Dan Gurney was handed a jeroboam of Moet on the podium in 1967 he shook it and sprayed Foyt, Shelby and everyone within range, and every champagne celebration in every sport since traces back to that moment. Gurney's own description was that it went off like a fire hose. The car itself long ago escaped the hobby: it is the shape people draw when they mean racing car.

Owning One

Why collectors want it

There is no ordinary GT40, and the market prices them by paperwork rather than by condition. At the top sit the cars that won. Chassis P/1046, the Mk II that took the 1966 race, made $9.8 million at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2018 and remains the most expensive GT40 ever sold. Below that come the six Mk IVs, the American honeycomb-tub cars that won in 1967 and were legislated out of existence immediately afterwards. Then the seven Mk IIIs, the only ones built as road cars from the start, awkwardly proportioned and long treated as the family embarrassment, now valued precisely because so few exist. Everything else is a Mk I production chassis from the GT40P/1000 to 1086 run, and even there the spread is enormous: a car with a period entry list and a continuous ownership trail is worth multiples of one that has been apart and back together. Continuations are a separate market and always will be. The reason the whole thing holds is simple. This is the only car in history built specifically to humiliate Ferrari at Le Mans, and it did it four times.

Which one to look for

Four genuinely different cars share this row, so start by learning which is which. The Mk I is the original Slough-built car, a sheet-steel monocoque with a small-block Ford behind the driver, first the 4.2-litre alloy V8 and then the 289 and later the 302. It is the one that failed in 1964 and 1965 and the one that won Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, by which time the rules had banned the big engines and a five-year-old design was suddenly eligible again. The Mk II is the 1966 car: the same basic tub carrying the 7.0-litre 427 FE and a Kar Kraft T-44 gearbox to cope with it. Eight of them went to Le Mans in 1966 and three finished, first, second and third. The Mk III is the odd one, seven cars built as road cars from the start, with round headlights, a detuned 289 rated at 306hp and an extended tail with somewhere to put luggage. The Mk IV is the American answer, six cars on the J-car's aluminium honeycomb tub, drawn by Roy Lunn's Dearborn team and built by Kar Kraft in Michigan. It won once, in 1967, and the rules changed against it straight afterwards.

The original Slough-built car and the one that bookends the whole story. Sheet-steel monocoque, small-block Ford behind the driver, starting with the 4.2-litre alloy V8 and moving through the 289 to the 302. It failed to finish Le Mans in 1964 and 1965, then won it outright in 1968 and 1969 in John Wyer's hands once the rules banned the big engines and made a five-year-old design eligible again. Some were built or converted to road specification.

The 1966 car. Essentially the Mk I tub carrying the 7.0-litre 427 FE, with a Kar Kraft T-44 four-speed built specifically to survive behind it. Ford took eight Mk IIs and five Mk Is to Le Mans in June 1966; three finished, first, second and third. Chassis GT40P/1046 took the win with Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon and is the most expensive GT40 ever sold.

Mk III · 1967–1969

The road car, and the one nobody wanted at the time. Round headlights instead of the racer's oblong units, a 289 detuned to a rated 306hp, softened suspension, a more habitable cabin and a rear deck extended to make room for luggage. It looks awkward next to a Mk I and it is now valued precisely because so few were built.

The American answer, and a different car under the skin. Built on the J-car's aluminium honeycomb tub with a longer nose, a new roofline and a Can-Am style tail, drawn by Roy Lunn's Dearborn team and assembled by Kar Kraft at Brighton, Michigan. Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt won Le Mans with one in 1967, covering 388 laps and 5,232.9km, the only Le Mans victory with an American chassis, engine, team, drivers and tyres.

What owning one is like

Owning one is closer to running a historic race team than keeping a car. The tub is sheet steel and is the single most important thing on the vehicle, so corrosion in a monocoque that spent a season being crashed, repaired and stored is what costs real money and what determines value. Heat is a permanent condition rather than a fault. Everything about the packaging that made the car quick at Le Mans, the radiator ahead of the driver's feet and the plumbing running between the seats, makes it punishing anywhere else, and no amount of restoration changes that. The transaxles want specialist attention: the Colotti units were never durable, and even a good ZF 5DS-25 is a sixty-year-old unsynchronised racing gearbox with a finite life between rebuilds. None of this deters anybody, because these cars get used. Historic racing keeps most of them running rather than parked, which is also why so many have been apart more than once and why the paperwork trail matters as much as the metal.

Upkeep & parts

Support is far better than the production figure suggests, largely because of the continuation industry. Safir GT40 Spares, formed in 1999 by Brady Pack, John Sadler and Bob Wood, exists specifically to supply parts and technical help to GT40 owners and holds the GT40 trademarks; Superformance builds licensed continuations under that licence, which keeps a real supply chain alive for components Ford stopped caring about in 1969. Engines are the easy part. A 289 or a 302 Windsor is a Ford small block any competent shop can rebuild, and the 427 FE is equally well understood by the American racing trade. Transaxles are where the money goes: ZF 5DS-25 units are traded, rebuilt and argued over constantly, and a Colotti needs somebody who has seen one before. Bodywork is hand-formed and bespoke, so panel damage is a fabrication job rather than a parts order. Documentation is the other running cost, because any serious sale is expected to arrive with a researched chassis history.
